General News/Current Affairs Thread

South Shields MP David Miliband has resigned as Sunderland FC vice-chairman over the appointment of new manager Paolo Di Canio.

The former Foreign Secretary, who was also a non-executive director of the club, said he had made the decision due to the Italian's "past political statements".

In a statement on his website, he said: "I wish Sunderland AFC all success in the future. It is a great institution that does a huge amount for the North East and I wish the team very well over the next vital seven games.

Who says there are no politicos with the courage of their convictions any more?

Bloody hell! Sunderland must be really desperate... I mean Di Canio was 100% on his way to Reading until the players and fans started a stink up.

Reading... READING!

It's a funny old game.

I thought we had a separate thread for discussing grown men kicking a ball around and crying like babies when another player touches them?

lol, Ryo.

I think Di Canio could be a decent choice by Sunderland. Rare to see a player of Di Canio's quality earn his stripes managing a smaller club before getting a shot with a bigger one these. And, in all honesty, it's pretty unlikely the Sunderland fans are going to care about his political statements, past or present.

We don't have a Wrestling thread though

The lack of a wrestling thread is largely irrelevant, nor is there anything much in common between wrestling and football.

Why talk about football in a news and current affairs thread when you already have a dedicated football thread?

There are even links to the football and sports threads in the first post of this one, so there is no excuse really.

There is the wider question of whether Di Canio's acknowledged facist political views are something that should be tolerated in football, aside from the fact he's now manager of a club that's as socialist and working class as they come.

Still, it IS football, and there is a thread specifically for it. This thread is for better things. A fascist in football is hardly news, considering how much racism there still is. Certainly more racism in football than any other sport.

You've made more posts whining in this thread than actually contributing to it. We get it. You don't like football. You've made that abundantly clear in the football thread.

Now stop crying and bring up a new topic if it bothers you so much.

North Korea is a stratocracy that pretends it's a hereditary monarchy pretending to be a communist dictatorship of the people.

Yes, I did intend to use the word pretend twice, and I reserve the right to look smug when I'm proven to be right as and when Kim Jong Un's official title becomes "the defendant".

Who the heck ADVERTISES their 'US mainland strike plan'?! It's almost as if he wants the US to bomb him.

It's an attempt to scare the Americans to the negotiating table while making Kim look like the military strongman they've made him out to be at home.
