In an interview with Russian news agency RIA Novosti, Hideaki Anno of Neon Genesis Evangelion fame and upcoming co-director for the new Godzilla movie states his belief that anime in Japan is already on the decline.
For one thing, Anno points out that the system by which anime is produced in Japan is itself on the decline. For example, starting animators barely make a living wage. Such a system cannot support itself and its collapse is merely a matter of time. Anno predicts it will fall apart within the next five to twenty years.
Additionally, Anno believes that Japan will become a place where talented people and money will both fall away from the animation industry, leading to a state of affairs where it’s impossible to create good anime anymore.
Anno also notes that the center of the anime industry is likely to move away from Japan and to places where business and morale conditions are more favorable. While anime will continue as a concept and an industry, Japan will no longer be its center. And when a Japanese animation renaissance hits, Anno isn’t certain if the fans will be there anymore.
