E3 2011 official thread

Somewhat underwhelmed by the news so far.

Hey guys, the Kinect still exists and there's a new Halo and Call of Duty.

Not that I hate these things but this is a familiar parade of franchise fodder that is tired.

On the subject of the Wii - personally I find it has the most unpretentiously fun games of any console I've played this generation. It has a nice suite of mature titles as well. The are controls are also fine. The problem is that, apart from Nintendo, developers and publishers aren't bringing anything new or inventive to the table and aside from the occasional release from Capcom, EA and Sega there hasn't been much to use the control scheme.

I am not to sure about the "Wii U". With power at least on par with xbox360, a very expensive looking controller and Nintendo in the past refusing to make a loss on unit sales. I can Imagine the "Wii U" will be very expensive.

Also this new home console won't be released until sometime in 2012. Yet Nintendo didn't reveal any new Wii games? So all we really got to look forward for the Wii from Nintendo in the future is Zelda Skyward Swords. Seem a bit poor to me. If they are not going to bother supporting their existing home console are third party going to bother?

I'll probably get a PSV when my games of choice all end up migrating to it but I can't say a single other nugget of news from E3 besides that one name announcement has interested me so far :s

More money for anime, woohoo.

I like the look of the Wii U. I wonder what storage media they will use? Blu-ray hopefully, otherwise they'll have the '360 problem'.

Did anyone hear whether all of the PSV games going to be download only?

I heard they're using some sort of proprietary memory for this handheld so possibly games on a SD card type thing?

Nintendo E3 Conference

Started a few minutes late, but to kick things off, they go straight for their green boy, Link, as Nintendo Celebrates 25 years of The Legend of Zelda. Fully orchestrated music at the front to add to the effect. At the same time, they cleverly throw in gameplay from the upcoming Ocarina of Time 3D, then onto the new Skyward sword, with a new trailer, which looks pretty damned nice from what's shown. On walks Shigeru Miyamoto, talking about the music for Zelda, from what i can make out, he is essentially saying that the music for Skyward Sword is set to be fully orchestrated. They get the orchestra at the front to play some of the infamous music from the game, such as solving a puzzle or getting an item from a chest. This leads cleanly into the 3D eshop, and that links awakening will be the first game available for the GBC on the shop, and of course next weekend has Ocarina of Time launch on the 3DS.

Ocarina of time has Master quest in the game as well as a boss challenge mode. On DSi will be available the four swords zelda game free for everyone. Skyward Sword will be out this Holiday season around the world and will also get a limited edition golden wii controller.

The legend of Zelda 25th anniversary symphony concerts will happen this fall in every region of the world, along side two official soundtracks, one for Ocarina of Time 3D which is available for those that register the game with club nintendo, and the other will be for the symphony orchestra.

Iwata replaces Miyamoto on the stage to talk about the changing of the gaming industry and the way people view each console. He now starts to say that the new home console will be made to bring in all kinds of gamers, and not focus on just bringing in one type. But that will come up later, now he moves onto games for the 3DS

It starts off with stuff like Mario Kart, Star Fox, Super Mario Bros, Kid Icarus, Luigis Mansion in the trailers. Now, on comes good old Reggie. To start off, he covers Mario Kart for the 3DS which looks even better than the one they have on the Wii graphically. Courses seem to be in the air, on the ground, underwater and so on. You get stuff like gliders and rotors for boats as you cover different areas of each course. And the release will be out this winter.

Star Fox is next to hit the screen. You can use buttons to turn and manoeuvre the characters or you can use the built in gyro-sensor to move instead. Much like how the PSV was showing to use it's 6-axis you could say.

Super Mario 3D finally gets it full unveiling with some gameplay. it looks to incorporate 3D and 2D gameplay, and you suits shown are the likes of the tanuki suit and fire flower. And will be out this year.

Kid Icarus: Uprising returns with new gameplay shown, as well as what looks to be multiplayer as well. It also comes with new Augmented reality cards. Multiplayer looks like it will be 3 on 3, and the augmented reality cards can be used to battle other players.

Luigi finally makes its triumphant return with Luigis Mansion 2. Gameplay looks exactly as you would hope, keeping to what it was always good at. It will include more than one mansion this time round.

Now onto the third party games, showcasing Resident Evil: The Mercenaries, Ace Combat 3D, Tetris, Cave Story 3D, Revelations, Driver Renegade, Pac-Man & Galaga, Tekken 3D & MGS: Snake Eater. He touches on the virtual console for the 3DS, covering games even before the NES. You get 3D excitebike for free for a limited time only now the update is available. You can get a free 3D pokedex, which will have 16 in the game when you start. You get others through spotpass, trading with others, augmented cards and so on. And these can be used alongside your camera and for photos.

The new system seems to be called the Wii U. The new controller is shown, it has a 6" touch screen in the middle of the controller, and has two analog sticks, d-pad, shoulder buttons and the regular A,B,X,Y. Games from the new system can be transfered to the Wii U controller. it can be used for drawing as well. Games like checkers and othello are on it too. It can interact with all of the Wii controls and from the look of it, the Wii as well. Video Calls can be done on it also, and it can interact with the internet and TVs.

As said above, it's completely backwards compatible with the Wii. The controller also has a gyroscope, touch screen, microphone and such. To cover this more again, Miyamoto appears again going into detail about how it will work. Developers can decide how they want the game to work with the console. Whether it works with gyro-sensor and the screen, or just for the big screen and such. There is endless ways to deal with it, which is what they where wanting, so that any developer can work on it.

Sakurai has decided to make a Super Smash Brothers for both the Wii U and the 3DS, and not only that, but it will also work together with the game, however it is not really covered on how this will work.

Developers like last year are now saying what they could do with the console. from THQ, EA, Ubisoft and so on. Darksiders 2, Tekken both are set for it on launch, Batman: Arkham City, Assassins Creed, Ghost Recon Online, EA sports, all of which are set for it. Now they go into trailers for the games, Dirt, Aliens: Colonial Marines, Metro: Last Light, Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor Light where also ones shown for the console.

EAs lead director comes onto the stage for the first time ever with Nintendo. Think he just hinted at Battlefield 3 for the Wii U. Reggie comes on to conclude the conference saying how the DS, Wii, 3DS and now the Wii U all have come to change gaming.

So long as it is closer to Blu-ray in capacity, things should be ok.

Not really all the psyched about Wii U. As technology it's impressive, as a gaming system, it seems to ony overcomplicate pretty much all the games it was showcased for. Yes you can use wii fit away from the tv, but now you have to hold the thing instead of just using the board.

Yes you can use it to aim with stuff, but how is that any different from pointing at the screen?

Also, right pad ABOVE the buttons? I see that being a bit irksome...

I imagine it will be fine, though I understand your concern, as it is different from what we are all used to.

From what has been thrown out here and their, the format for which the games are on seems to be about the same size as a BD disk, so about 25gb in size.

@Sparrow: What a lot of people agreed on, was that there wasn't enough said, or the explanation given for it wasn't as clear as it could have been. until we can truly see it in action with a real game, we can't judge how well it will work. I expect though, it will only sound complicated in context, in use, it won't be so hard to get to grips with. The only thing i'm curious about, is that with Darksiders 2 and arkham city out this year, what can nintendo offer for these titles that is unique, so that when the Wii U is released next year, they will still feel new and will be the optimal version to have.

Ok, the Wii U uses "Proprietary format" for their own Optical Disks for storage, so yeah, it can have quite a fair bit of storage.

@Lawrence: I wouldn't say uninspired, because it uses a good mix of what they have designed so far, and placed it onto one controller. The controller is not meant to make it fully portable, it's there so that if the TV you where using for the console is taken, you can switch and play it on the controller instead. The range of the controller at the moment, is said to be enough to stay in the same vicinity as the console, as it needs to communicate with it.

The console itself wasn't revealed, as they said, it's just a box at the moment. Still a lot to reveal over the next 3 days, and however many months.

Looking at pictures for this....its just a wii with a tv that you can walk around with....

I suppose Wii bowling will be abit more challenging on the move :p

Why've they done this? They've not long brought out the 3ds, the DS line is for portable gaming so to collaborate them both like this serves little purpose in my eyes, and please don't tell me this is the thing you where on about that has more processing power than a 360 or ps3, i highly doubt it.

It does, actually, and not only that but IBM and AMD have already shown their contracts with nintendo on this.

What people don't seem to have come to terms with, is that Nintendo only showed off the controller Not the console itself. They decided that, all they would see with the console is a box, and it wasn't the most important thing to be shown when looking to the Wii U. The specs are set to be released now, if not by the end of the week, but the tech video for The legend of Zelda, and the one showing off a bird in a courtyard are both done through it's processing powers.

Also, if it wasn't as powerful as they suggested, why would they be releasing Ninja Gaiden 3, Batman: Arkham City, Darksiders 2 and possibly Battlefield 3 on it? As reggie said in an interview, up until now third party creators steered clear because of the "horsepower" of the console, now that power is there, they have no reason to avoid it.

Well, with abit of luck they'll pull out all the stops to prove it as a success, don't get me wrong. i own my own Wii and its great for playing certain games (monster hunter tri is about as good as the consoles graphics can muster) But now that Tri has a port to the PS3 coming up the need to play any Wii games remain in the centre of "party/childerns - none serious gaming console"

I'm hoping that the processing power and the teams developing games really give it their all to show off the graphics. (btw did you know catwoman is a playable character in arkham city?)
The one nintendo games console that i feel did really well was the super nintendo, donkey kong country (later rereleased on the wii) Super metroid (excellent game) along with other titles (star wars for example) where side scrolling platformers with not the best of graphics but my god they where games. You can literally spend hours upon hours playing the old games and there was no real difficulty settings, all the games where for "serious gamers" at the time.

I want to see those days again where its a proper console. The GC and Wii let them down alot.

Yeah, catwoman as a playable was known for about a week before E3, looks nice how they include her as a character to play as, and they still keep the game single player, as it should be.

The gamecube had it's fair share of good games, but a lot of the time, the console was overshadowed, which was the problem. Wii in it's own right was hugely successful, but it did aim itself at more "casual" gamers. This time, they are looking to bring in all kinds of gamers to the console, not just specific ones, hence why the titles announced for it where the likes of Dirt and Ninja Gaiden 3. Its BC with the Wii will help as well for those that want their casual games. So yeah, if they keep to this, it will work well for them. Now, all we need is the release date and that dreaded price.
