Dubs vs Subs

I tend to prefer the original japanese dub over the english dub with alot of the shows, but there are a few anime shows i watch solely in english simply because its better than the japanese dub.

Out of all the main shows i've seen...

Haruhi Suzumiya
Black Lagoon
Full Metal Panic
Pani Poni Dash
Read or Die
Fruit Baskets

...they are certainly better in english dubs than japanese.

Everyone has a preference i guess, i tend to choose what dub to listen to by how much i like it. (like Mahoromatic for example, the english was extremely bad lol)

Man, I thought AUKN was the most anti-dub website in the world, youtube makes me rage so bad due to people saying "dubs are gay" but there's dub fans here...? M--Mina-san... >_>

Of course, this thread started because of me. ME, ME, ME. I just happened to get a little bit too verbal, like always and BAM. Someone took the bait, naturally you've all proven yourself in my eyes, well done.

Who am I to say this?

Oh. My next question is: What's with the insults now?

I don't particularly like your condescending attitude to be honest

Word of advice: Don't throw insults, it can get hostile if the other party hasn't intended anything.

I would be quite hostile back, but I'm more mature than this and I'm tired.

Instead, I'll take my anger out on this guy on MSN. For the travesty he's started.

Far more interesting topic of conversation. ::pulls lever, changes tracks::

English dubs I actually preferred to watch over the Japanese:

Black Lagoon
Cowboy Bebop
Ergo Proxy
Hellsing Ultimate
Stand Alone Complex

And all old Manga dubs, regardless of how inaccurate, are at least equal in my eyes for the entertainment value they provide.

That'd pretty much be my list too, they're all strong dubs IMO, and those Old Manga dubs never fail to amuse, there are few times I've laughed as hard as when I've watched the likes of Angel Cop or MD Geist.

Black Lagoon
Cowboy Bebop

are two titles that come to mind that I much prefer the English dub. Love 'im.

Seems like a lot of you like the Cowboy Bebop dub! I prefer the Japanese myself (mainly seeing as I saw the movie first, which was in Japanese), but in all honesty, I didn't really give it a chance.

My favourite dubs would have to be...

-Outlaw Star
-NGE
-Fullmetal Alchemist
-Wolf's Rain
-Shaman King
-Bleach

Hello, my name is Fudce, and I am a dub fan.

I enjoy watching anime with the english language dub, I also enjoy watching anime with the japanese language dub. In general I'll watch a dub if there is one, but I have no problem watching it subbed either. It's not because I'm lazy and don't want to read subtitles, and it's not because I want to listen to the anime in my native language. It's just my preference.

For me, the real tester of if a dub, be it English or Japanese, is if it can make me forget that I'm listening to a voice actor, or to enstill some form of emotional response from myself that is in line with what was intended.

I'll take a recent example of an anime which I consider to have a superb dub, Kanon. There is a scene towards the middle of the series which made me shed a few tears in the Japanese version. It was a sad scene. When I watched the English language version however I knew the scene was coming, and I knew that it was sad, but when I watched it in english the scene had so much more emotion that I wept along with anime characters. To me, that is an example of the dub succeeding in what it set out to do, and is therefor a good dub. The Japanese version was also good, but for me I felt the English version was superior in this instance.

I have also grown to enjoy listening to several voice actors in particular. Carrie Savage often gives a very good performance, and I am quite fond of the voice of Kate Bristol, but that's not to say I don't also respect the Japanese Seiyuu. I'd bow at the feet of Mikako Takahashi, and I love the amount of drama that Jun Fukuyama is able to give any role he visits.

I notice that the "Resident Evil" dub was brought up... Get with the times! That was recorded in the 90's. Back then, dubbing was lower quality, but as we moved into the year 2000 and beyond, the dubbing industry for anime, and later games, grew and learned. Often, English language voice actors have history in musical theatre, and even though they haven't seen the anime, they are paid to act, so act they do. Communities of fans of dubs have grown, and discussed the intricate details of each dub, what performances they felt were good or bad.

There of several titles that always appear when people talk about the high quality of anime dubbing, so if you do doubt the quality I suggest you try one of these series to judge for yourself. If you don't like them, then you don't have to watch them again in english. That's your choice, but to blindly say that all anime dubs suck is just a false generalisation made with no evidence. The series I recommend are Full Metal Panic: The Second Raid, Princess Tutu, Kanon, ROD the TV, Kamichu, and BECK.

you wrote a little essay how cute
Those were some random choices
I thought the beck dub sucked btw
I haven't even even seen the others

and if had to recomend dubs they would be

fccl (hell yes) cowboy bebop (pretty dern good as far as dubs go)

Samurai champloo

full metal alchemist (all the extra characters had sucky voices though)

Gurren laggan (kaminas voice grew on me somewhat too bad bout kittan though)

haruhi (kyons voice actor I forget his name was rather good)

and death note

not that I care for dubs as to what the represent
but those would be ones I would recommend if I did

Nowadays I always at least listen to the dub for a few minutes before deciding on the lingo. However, the English tends to hurt my ears and I normally switch back to Japanese. It's a pain to have to keep looking at the borrom of the screen, missing the animation but I'll do that if it means not hating the characters because of poor-average voice acting.

The only high quality anime dubs - on par with the Japanese - I've listened to are the Cowboy Bebop and Wolf's Rain dubs. I also recall liking the Eva, Berserk and Death Note dubs, though the English voice actor of Light in DN fails to capture Light and as a result makes the dub inferior.

My main reason for not wanting to listen to anime in English is JYB. His voice is everywhere and he always sounds the same. I hate hearing him due to how much he gets used - I hear him rather than the character he plays. It was laughable that he got Lelouch when he can't change his voice anfd always sounds goody-goody no matter what.

I have been forced to listen to some excellent PS2 game dubs. .hack//G.U. has the best dub I've heard and introduced me to my favourite English voice actor, Mr. Price. Suikoden V also has a top dub, and Price plays another role in that - a different role, one I didn't realize he played until later. And, of course, the Persona dubs are well respected for good reason.

That's hardly an essay. It's just what I wanted to say. The choices weren't random either, they are the dubs that myself and my peers consider to be good.

I'd love to learn what you didn't like about the BECK dub in particular? I enjoyed it for the way the cast worked together. The songs were well sung by the cast, and the way the dub handled the difficult problem of dubbing a series which have foreigners in it.

fccl (hell yes) cowboy bebop (pretty dern good as far as dubs go)
I only saw FLCL recently, and I did enjoy the dub. It is surprising that it was the first time that several cast members had appeared in anime. Kari Wahlgren specifically impressed me, and she has gone on to much greater things. She is superb in Lucky Star and Last Exile. As for Cowboy Bebop, I didn't like the show but the dub was decent.

Samurai champloo
not seen.

full metal alchemist (all the extra characters had sucky voices though)
I'm less of a fan of the Fullmetal Alchemist dub than some people are. It definitly has strong points, such as Vic Mignogna and Aaron Dismuke's portrayal of the brothers, but some of the other characters felt more flat and less inspired. It is a good dub but it didn't excite me.
I disagree that all of the extra characters have sucky voices, they had voices that fit their characters, but please share what you felt was so sucky about the voices rather than just saying that you didn't like them.

Gurren laggan (kaminas voice grew on me somewhat too bad bout kittan though)
Not seen.

haruhi (kyons voice actor I forget his name was rather good)
Crispin Freeman (Kyon) was absolutely fantastic as Kyon, but then he's no rookie voice actor and has a lot of experience voicing sarcastic cynics going back to one of his very first roles, Zelgadis in Slayers. I was less sold with Stephanie Sheh as Mikuru, but Wendee Lee worked remarkably well as Haruhi, and I loved the dubbed song on Live Alive.

and death note
I've only recently started watching this, and thus far the dub hasn't set me on fire, but it is pretty decent.

not that I care for dubs as to what the represent

So it's the very existance of dubs that you dislike rather than the quality of them? If that's the case then you should just say that in the first place rather than saying how they suck.

I'm quite a critic of Johnny Yong Bosch myself. He has some decent acting talent, as shown in series such as Last Exile and Eureka Seven, but more often he gets typecast and we end up with the same voice we hear everywhere else.

Often the decision of who to cast isn't in the hands of the english language director, with the Japanese deciding who should voice who, but for whatever the reason we end up with another JYB role.

He's a capable actor but I just wish we could hear him outside of his comfort zone more often.

Suikoden V is one of my favourite game dubs, and again it's Carrie Savage who I feel deserves a large amount of credit, this time for voicing the effective lead role of Lyon (she does the most speaking since Freyjadour doesn't speak). There are some lemons hidden in the dub, but overall the characters have personality in their voices.

I pretty much dislike almost all the ones I didn't mention

1 don't diss Stephanie Sheh lol she was perfect as mikuru
she sounded pretty much exactly like the japanese one and sounded really cute as well (something lacking in most eng dubs :p )

2 full metal alchemist
I felt there was a massive case of underacting in lots of the one off characters cases
example ep 11/12 The other brothers elric/Earth of gravel
the little boy that was pretending to be one of the brothers his english voice was awful just awful (how they found work i'll never know )

3 beck
okay maybe I just somewhat byast too disliking dubs where the completely murder the original script and just make their own stuff up
I just like it to be as accurate as possible
(could have made them French for all I care at least it would be somewhat accurate)

4 death note

L has a beautiful English voice it's just really pleasant to listen too I can't deny it

and kiras voice actor for the last episode wow

5 fccl
Yes I adore this dub its amazing
the characters sound pretty much like there Japanese counterparts
and the even left in the horifics :D I wish they did that all the time :(

I don't recall them making things up in Beck, could you give me an example of what sort of fabrication you are talking about?

There was one note of caution with the Beck dub, and that is what many would consider to be an unnecessary use of foul language, but even that has reasons and fits in with the feel and flow of the series. In the original Japanese, the American characters often spoke a form of broken japanese that sounded less intellegent, and some of the characters have a hard time reading Japanese. That is a lot harder to portray in the English dub, so instead of trying to copy the Japanese and fail miserably they decided instead to make the Japanese speakers very polite and regular with their voices, whilst making the Americans speak brashly, and often quite rude. The characters themselves aren't changed drastically and the nature is pretty much the same (people who talk in this manner are often less intellegent/have lower vocabularies) but I can see how people would take offense to that.

As for Stephanie Sheh's portrayal of Mikuru Asahina in Haruhi... I never said it was bad - did I? And did I just see you defend a dub? I spy progress :)
