Dubs vs Subs

Wow some things really do never change!

I never, ever watch dubs and will never buy an English-only anime unless it's a special case (VHD:BL for example). However, I think they're a great thing. Anime is never going to sell in the volumes of Naruto, Death Note etc without dubs. Kids can't read subs fast enough to enjoy a series, and some people (dyslexics for example?) will never enjoy reading their entertainment.

Then you have normal people who simply enjoy dubs or want to unwind with something playing on their TV or in the background without having to read subtitles. It's entertainment; they can do as they like. Why do some people persistently feel the need to flame others for being a fan of a particular audio track? It's been this way ever since the very first English dubs and simply will not die.

My personal reasons for disliking dubs is the cultural gulf adding an arbitrary third culture (American) to the mix introduces - I'm not cool and can't keep up with some of the more obscure slang/accents. I'm used to reading subs anyway - we watch a lot of foreign films from all over the world, and watch my English stuff with SDH on when possible for various reasons - so it's no inconvenience. And I like picking up on the way some things are said in their original language and the occasional completely untranslatable pun. I'm also a fan of a lot of seiyuu, often buying mediocre shows just to enjoy a particular actor's performance. Some dub watchers do the same for their favourites now; it's cool that some dubs are finally on that quality level and getting new fans interested in their take on things.

When it's an American show I usually love the American voice acting (Avatar, Futurama etc) so I know there is talent out there. I haven't yet encountered any to my taste in anime but everyone has their own preferences.

Lets face it

Anything that's dubbed into your own native language always has the chance of sounding a bit crap because you're intimate with the language and you can tell when the voice actors are rubbish.

Anything that you watch in a foreign language will always sound good because you have no idea if the voice actors can actually act or not, if you can't understand it, then how can you tell.

English voice acting could have somehow become a lot better in the last few years, it could somehow become much better in the coming years, heck they could even start trying to convince decent actors to do the job by finding hitherto unknown pots of money to pay them, but I'd never find out, just in the same way I'll never find out if Japanese dubbing of English films has got or ever will get any good - I watch it as it was originally produced, or I don't watch it at all.

This topic makes me feel sick to the stomach that I felt like... being an anime fan = being an immature, weeabo twat. I just had to share that out.

Anyway, There are times I prefer dub and times I prefer Sub. Fullmetal Alchemist, I loved in Dub, but now. I can appreciate both languages to the fullest, thanks to Brotherhood. I appreciate Romi Park as well as Vic Mignogna for their role of Edward Elric.

Some, like Serial Experiments Lain, are better in Japanese. But that's because the actress of Lain weren't portraying Lain changing well as well as the Seiyuu did. Chrono Crusade is a anime I would always love in Dub. I tried changing to the sub, but I did not enjoy it as much. I loved how Rosette's voice.

I do watch more anime in Sub than Dub. For one, I hated Ghost Hunt's dub, but I didn't bother watching it in Japanese. The characters killed off my interest of the series than anything else. One character isn't going to make me watch more of it, especially when I hate the rest of the cast.

Japanese love the English voices, it's why Resident Evil doesn't 'exist in Japanese', because they love the English voices. It's also the reason why Kingdom Hearts has english voices when they re-released in Final Mix versions [though I bet that's due to the popular actors than anything else]

I'm talking about the public. Not the director. If the audience doesn't like it, then it doesn't matter what the director thinks.
 
This topic of conversation is and always will be pointless as it's totally subjective. While it's fair enough to watch an anime and then discuss the merits of it's animation quality, storyline or character development (things you can't change with the push of a button) you can choose whether to watch subbed or dubbed! So if someone prefers one and not the other, what the hell should that matter to anyone else? It's not like your choice is being taken away.
 
^Yes, the choice is there. But if the western anime fanbase doesn't understand it and still rages on, then this argument just simply won't die. Really, I'm incline to think that they rage on about it is to justify "watching fansubs". I can hear the next whiny fan saying "I bought the DVD, but I never use the dub. So I watch my fansubs" as some sort of idiotic excuse.

The fanbase can be full of fucktards.

while dubs can sometimes be somewhat decent and useful to very lazy people

No, I'm not going to accept that conclusion. I've felt so sick at that conclusion that I think I'm going hit my head.

That's just your opinion, not actual fact. I cannot agree with an idiotic statement like that.

Well said. At least we're not stuck with single audio track, dub only VHS's anymore, anime fans can have it both ways, sub and dub thanks to DVD's. No ones right or wrong here, as Ayase points out it's subjective and hardly worth an argument over.
