Dubs vs Subs

I tend to avoid things that are popular, simply because I despise them.

Big Brother, Dancing on Ice, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, The National Lottery, Michael Jackson (music, couldn't care less about the man), Eastenders, Corrie...

Just because something is popular, doesn't make it quality, and the reverse is true as well.

Then again, you can have popular and quality, and of course there is unpopular and crap.

Anime-wise, there is the fact that I missed the boat on so much stuff, that watching it now isn't the same thing. Fist of the North Star may be popular, as may Robotech. It doesn't stop me from falling asleep at it.
 
how popular something is, rarely if ever affects my decision to watch it or not, i watch stuff because i here about it, and i think it sounds like something i would like, thats how i started watching most of the anime i watch.

Dubs vs subs, well in multiple cases I feel the subs are better, sometimes the characters personality isn't presented in the same way, particularly a meek and mild anime gal who's voiced my a screeching american woman? *head desk* That puts me off completely.

On the other hand as said somewhere above here, the english dubs can be really good sometimes, I recently came across the english version of FLCL (having origionally watched it subbed) the english voice actors in my opinion were PERFECT, I absolutely love it : D, Outlaw Star the voice actors were fine too I thought and the same with Fruits basket (although I found Yuki a tad creepy at first XD).

All in all I feel it differs for each seperate show, and occasionally for me on how lazy I feel (I have been known to watch dubbed just because I'm fed up of reading subtitles!).

True my error in assuming the word was 'watch' invalidates the last point. :S Dang~ should have got that one really, the chemicals, they rot my brain.
 
when watching anime i always pick the Japanese soundtrack as a lot of reference humour is lost in the dub.

Dub Actors are guys who could not cut it out in real acting so they voice cartoons, ask any one of them they all come from real acting backgrounds . In Japan people train just to be a Seiyuu. That shows the different in passion they have for there line of work.

Every english dub is done by the same pool of voice actors (Bang Zoom, Ocean Group). I have seen the so "Good" dubs Cowboy bebop, Outlaw star and so on and i think Its because you heard the dub first is why you like it.

Also to the person who made the point how Japanese girls talk in high pitched voices.. that's how normal high schools talk in Japan!!! People do have voices like that!
Its like me making fun of a English actors English accent...

Dubs are done for people who think there language is the best, I speak both French and English and well i wouldn't a English movie with a French dub or a French movie with a English dub.

Stuff like Vampire Hunter D are a exception to the rule as they were created for a English audience so they were dubbed in English first.
To sum up my points is you should watch the Show/movie/whatever in the original language it was intended for as you will miss out puns and jokes that will be changed in a dub.

oh and TTGL is not mainstream, until i see it displayed in shops openly like Naruto it is not mainstream. The internet does not equal real life because if it did I would be a Women

TTGL is mainstream! It doesn't need to be sold in a shop window to qualify as "mainstream". Hell, I don't think I've ever seen anime advertised in a shop.

Honestly, go to an expo, ask someone to name 10 different anime series from the top of their head, TTGL WOULD come up.

Considering almost all forms of discussion and news related to anime is on the internet, I would have to say it qualifies.

Some would argue--I recall reading an interview with a guy from Square Enix pertaining to Final Fantasy--that to more faithfully enjoy the show in a manner akin to that of a Japanese person watching it, the joke should be localised to elicit an analogous sense of enjoyment for the English person. In other words, translating a joke literally will not accurately translate the feeling of it.

Not to say these are my sentiments, but I can see the merit in them.

How does reading subtitles help you understand a cultural reference better than hearing dialogue? Unless there's accompanying notes explaining the joke you're not going to get it either way.

...you're saying not many people would know what she's off? Gurren Laggan isn't recent at all. Maybe more recent than Naruto and Bleach, but that doesn't make it new.

Obviously loads of people know Naruto, but that doesn't mean there's no room in their animu database minds for other series. I saw several Gurren Laggan cosplayers when I went to the cosplay Expo in May.

If you're still doubtful, just remember that the show even spawned it's own meme! Sort of.

I'm not sure how frequently that happens any more. In any case, I've watched plenty of subtitled anime that failed to explain jokes and puns and as a result they fell completely flat.

I used to despise all English anime dubs without exception, but I began to change my stance after I dared to watch some shows and films with dubbing.

It's childish to assume that all attempts at redubbing will be unworthy of listening to. The original language will almost inevitably be superior, but that’s not to say new voiceovers can’t bring anything good to an anime. In the last decade there’s been drastic improvement in the quality of western voiceovers and in the case of some shows (Cowboy Bebop, Black Lagoon) I actually find the dubs to be preferable over the original cast. Sometimes it’s just nice to hear things in your own language and not have to focus on subtitles rather than the animation.

It’s true information can be lost in translation or lines can just sound plain wrong in English, while terrible 80’s era dubs don’t help matters. As a rule I prefer Japanese with subtitles, but there will always be exceptions.
