Defective or Disappointing UK Anime Discs

Nope. Another thing I've noticed with Space Dandy is that the Creditless Endings for episodes 20 - 26 and the 1m30 scenery gallery thingy all seem to have mono audio. Like with Gurren Lagann, downmixing the audio from the episodes to mono results in both audio streams sounding the same, whilst doing the same with the Creditless ending results in pretty much zero difference.

The audio for the episodes are fine though, it's just these extras.

Oh, does it use the Japanese opening? The version I "procured" had this opening:

Is this on DVD?
Bluray. I'm pretty strictly BD only when HD masters exist for a show.

So where did you find those extras? I finished watching the review discs yesterday, and all I got were 1 clean opening, 1 clean closing (the main one with the moonwalking), and 3:22 of trailers on Disc 2.

I found them on disc with my PC initially. Just checked on my PS4 and you have to go to the extras tab and keep going right to show them.

Cheers. I thought they'd been missed out. Didn't think there were more extras than appeared on the first screen!

Speaking of Space Dandy Season 2, is it just me or does it have the same disc labelling issue as Season 1? Episode 20 is listed as being the first one on the second disc but seems to be the last one on disc 1. Unfortunately, skipping to episode 21 from episode 19 isn't nearly as effective as skipping from 6 to 8 was in the first season (not that you shouldn't go back to watch episode 7 afterwards).

With regard to the audio issue, I feel like the English and Japanese versions sound slightly different although it may just be that the Japanese track is louder in general (or it could just be me). I didn't really notice the same in the first season (again though, that could just be me).

So this is something I've been wondering for a while but never got around to asking. Is the UK DVD release of Spirited Away poor or is it just my copy? The picture quality is poor and it has the same issue as the Manga EoE release where the widescreen is botched and doesn't reach the sides although to a much lesser extent than EoE.

That's likely a symptom of it just being old. Studio Canal started issuing their Ghibli DVDs in earnest around 2006/2007 and back then widescreen wasn't as universal as it is now, so DVD transfers were largely just done to fit current telly sizes. EoE is probably the single worst example, but there are other similar ones like the Patlabor movies too.

I can't remember exactly when the Spirited Away DVD came out, but it would have been one of the earlier ones.

It's an annoying issue with the way Funimation masters their audio. All of Funi's releases have the audio tracks mastered at a really low volume for some reason (Both JP and ENG dub). This release probably uses Funi's dub track and the Japanese track provided by the licensor, rather than two tracks mastered by Funi - hence why the difference is more noticable.

From UKA's review of the Chu2koi DVD:
we should also point out that the DVD release suffers slightly in terms of audio quality too - the NTSC to PAL conversion process has introduced some noticeable "warble" to the sound which is particularly pronounced during background music, although thankfully doesn't impinge upon dialogue too much that we noticed.
Yet another Sentai title with this issue, yet oddly it was released by Madman in Australia and they're normally at least competent with the audio on PAL conversions.

Madman pitch correct a lot for their PAL speed-ups, it's that which introduces the 'warble'. Which is why I want someone else to license Gosick!

Just so I put it in the right section, is this the BD or the DVD (or both)?

Thanks!

I've only encountered it recently on Sentai/Hanabee/MVM titles like Dusk Maiden and MGX. The only one I can think of that might have been Madman was Ghost Hunt, and that was a while back now.

Gosick also has this warble in places and that is a madman release.

Does anyone even have a 50Hz tv?

All UK TVs are essentially 50hz. When the mains supply is 50hz 240v ac, that's the frequency the appliances will run at. It was an inherent property of CRT sets, that was the rate that the electron guns in the tube scanned the screen at. As a legacy of that, all television is still broadcast at 50Hz, PAL SD, and 1080i HD. Of course, LCD, plasma, OLED TVs work on a different principle that lets them display content at different frame rates, but the 50hz legacy will always be here, until the electricity supply changes.

Well does anyone that watches any still use a crt?

Actually, I still have my Sony CRT, which I use to watch DVDs on, especially those older NTSC-PAL standards conversions that look like mud on an HD set. I also find the SD set useful for watching SD Freeview channels, as they look horrible scaled up. I do watch plenty of 60Hz NTSC DVDS on it as well though, as it can still handle that input as well.
