In that case I'd say the closest would probably be Kitacon in Birmingham.

I've never had a bad experience telling anyone I like anime. If anything I'm the harder one to please! People did call me names (for plenty of other diverse reasons) as a kid, but I think schools are just like that. In the world of work nobody has ever batted an eyelid at my eccentric ways.

I find people who don't have any hobbies at all terribly boring, though if they have a completely different hobby to me, that's fine. One of my relatives is really into vintage buses, which isn't something that interests me at all. Still, I like talking to him because we're both passionate about something.

@Rui my school life was the worst. kids are the worst. i sometimes wish i could just go back in time and slice them in to pieces or even better put them in a *saw* Scenario and see them in pain. but that would make me worse then them so il just pity them

I hated school back when I was there and still hate it now, but for different reasons. I hated back when I was there because I got picked on and I didn't make many friends. I hate it now because it was a Catholic school and they kept on forcing all of this rubbish (IMO) into our heads.

The thing I remember most was the day the pro-life campaigners came around and presented a slide show depicting aborted foetuses. I was about 14/15 at the time. That will stay with me to grave, I'm sure.

Still, Catholic school made who I am today - pro-choice and bisexual, with a fetish for nuns uniforms.

@Ian Wolf you hate religion too.......... so do i.
give me evolution and prehistoric animals and dinosaurs anyday
you should watch dispatcher - islamic schools. the stuff they teach the kids are freaking unbelievable they teach them to hate non muslims, the teachers tell them hindus are stupid and they tell them hindus drink cow piss, gays are evil, and they hit the kids for no reasonand these are the teachers and they make them take tests about shara law. its horrible.

I won't say I hate religion. I just hate enforced, organised religion. I don't mind what people believe in so long as they do not go around harming people because of their beliefs.

The best idea regarding I've heard was on Mark Thomas's Radio 4 show where someone came up with the idea that religion should have an age of consent. You can only be religious once you're 18.

Ha, I was educated as a strict Catholic too and now I'm an antisocial atheist who spends all her salary on dubious homoerotic doujinshi and fanservice shows. I wonder if they will ever learn that forcing beliefs onto people doesn't always work?

I hated school mostly for its focus on arbitrary curriculum targets rather than actual worthwhile education. The residual seething over my fellow students' need to bully people who aren't part of the crowd comes second to that.

im a atheist to i was religious when i was a kid my family exept my uncle and me are christians. but when i watched jarassic park i was so freakin amazed and i watched so many dinosaur documentaries that i studied dinosaurs and when it came to religion everything in about dinosaurs contradicts religion
so after years of watching dinosaur, prehistoric animals, and early man documentaries and seeing how religions a tool to gather the masses.

You could probably learn more just by watching all of QI than going to school for five years. It would certainly be more fun.

I was educated in a Catholic school and brought up in a Catholic family, and would still very much consider myself a Christian... but I do also spend copious amounts of time and money on things a lot of people would consider "dubious". ^^;

Referring back to what I said initially though, people have tried this, and you don't do it. You just say "oh my bad memory, lolz".

Except there's nothing in the Bible that discredits the existence of dinosaurs, but you go ahead and enjoy your "free thinking".

Oh wow, I'd actually managed to not read the post talking about how Jurassic Park and Jeff Goldblum discredited religion, thank you for quoting it.

While I agree with Rui that its not really important to have friends who also love anime (surprisingly I seem to have met a fair few who actually probably like it even more then me, and in pretty unlikely places too, so they cant be that hard to find?), however I would say that it is important (or at least very nice) to have real friends in general. I'm not saying you can't have internet mates but its important to remember that your most important friends are the kind who you can actually talk to in the flesh and be with, rather than just type to over a screen. And if your spending more time on forums then with your real friends, well you might not have any soon.

edit: damn it! I missed a whole page, I didn't realize we moved onto religion
