Didn't SEED and Destiny get a re-mastered Blu Ray treatment in Japan recently? (not sure if that got rid of the letterboxing or if that's even possible with the show? The show must have been one of the last before everything went widescreen)

It's a mixed bag. Alot of it is just the existing shows zoomed in/cropped to get a widescreen image in addition to some new animation/edits. Alot of it is fairly pointless cuts (sometimes as little as 5 seconds redone here and there) and in some cases it's pointless fanservice (apparently of the problems Destiny had, the lack of Meer's nipples was key). Some of it is more blatant, like giving the Strike a new configuation in both shows.

As a big Gundam fan, this is great news. I don't know about the money-per-episode thing, so I might wait a little while until any further announcements. I'd definitely put a blu-ray release of the series on my shelf next to all the other Gundam DVDs I have.

I would love a remastered Wing (I still have the old Beez releases, missed my chance on the remastered re-release) and I would love Gundam 00 on Blu, especially since the latter half of the series never got a boxed release in this country...

I'm pretty excited for this one, so definitely going to be looking into it. I think the fact that Tomino has made a return to gundam makes it more interesting too. I'm curious to see if he can refresh Gundam a bit, and see if he'll stick to his death-flag name or go for a happy tomino series. Still need to sit down and watch episode 1, but will do so tonight and get a good feel for it

The free version was up when I went to bed, and gone when i got up this morning planning to watch it on the iPad mini in bed before work. Ho hum. It wouldn't be the British anime scene without a little chaos and confusion in every release.

Just up and got it. £28 for a full series without all the technical do-hickey I'd need to get it on my HTPC ligit sounds like a good time for me.

New UC Gundam (or post UC Gundam)? Written and directed by Tomino himself? I'm there.

Are the files full 1080p though, it doesn't seem to tell me anywhere? If so, sold on DTO. If not... I'll probably wait and see if it pops up on Netflix and hope for a BD release.

You get mobile, sd, 480p, 720p and 1080p .mp4 hardsubbed files for your purchase.

Hmm. Is there an example anywhere of the actual full HD video quality I can view before I download? Because the trailer clearly isn't (or at least I really hope it isn't).

Don't get me wrong Andrew, this seems excellent and I'm quite excited for it, but without being able to verify video quality before I download I find it quite hard to part with my money.

Unfortunately I don't have a screen hooked up which is capable of displaying full 1080p right now but it looks reasonably nice. The video is coming up as 1920x1080 4.72Mbit/s (it's just shy of 900MB for ep 3, the one I checked).

The intentionally old-looking lines can be fuzzy from time to time but I'm finding the quality acceptable. I haven't ever seen how pin-sharp it's meant to look, though.

Mediocre screenshots scaled for my crummy screen size attached if it helps.

I trust your judgement in matters of quality Rui, thanks. Will probably go for it, it's definitely a good price for a 26 ep. series.

If anyone is interested in watching the show streaming for free try animelab.com

It's the new version from Madman.com.au

AnimeLab does seem to have an interesting line...
"Enter your email & we'll let you know when AnimeLab is available in your country."

Plans to launch in the UK?

Rrrreeeeeaaally hoping for a home video release for this.

Talk of Gundam Wing here kind of confuse me, though. I know very few fans of the franchise who rate it. Its not despised... just not especially liked, either. But what do I know? Maybe it depends who you talk to?

I think it depends. Many will say it was their first taste of Gundam - as it was one of the first that properly made it over to the west. In my opinion, it's a very 'pure' take on the format - without as much of the added romantic gloss and borderline harem stuff that started to creep into the likes of SEED.

I don't think Wing has dated too well in terms of the animation style, although I imagine an Blu-Ray remaster would do wonders to it.
