UK Anime Distributor Anime Limited Discussion Thread

Another newswire with nothing for me (not ordered anything since January), hoping something I've been waiting for is finally up for pre-order next month. I used to order more from Anime Limited, but seem they to be licencing less things that I'm interested lately. Still hoping there will be some nice surprise announcements in the second half of the year. Wonder if they could release more Netflix shows like Komi Can't Communicate and The Fragrant Flower Blooms With Dignity. But my biggest wish is still Laid Back Camp.
Nothing for me either yet again 😔 I also have not ordered anything since January and I have the same issue as you: AL is licensing stuff I am just not interested in. Laid Back Camp would be wonderful to get!

GKIDS have acquired the UK & Ireland rights to the entire Studio Ghibli film catalogue and, as stated within, this will include theatrical, home video, TV and digital. Of course, sister company Anime Limited will be involved where appropriate.

This follows on from previous Ghibli distro Elysian Film Group entering Insolvency in the past month Danny Perkins-Led Elysian Film Group Distribution Enters Insolvency

Announced as part of this, Kiki's Delivery Service will be the getting the 4K IMAX theatrical release later in the year

I doubt we will see 4k releases just blue ray like the steelbook releases.

A number of films in the Anime Limited catalogue will be on Disney+ in the UK and Ireland this year.

One of those is Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence.

Nice - a few there I've still not seen.

Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence still hasn't seen a 4k release out of japan for some reason.

Reportedly Anime Limited are going in big with Godzilla Minus Zero.

Hopefully it's a better movie this time. I'm aware I'm in the minority but I really didn't like how Minus One spends most of the movie seemingly criticising Japanese involvement in WWII only to heavily romanticise it in the final act. Especially baffling coming from the director of Lupin III The First, a movie that repeatedly mocks German Nazi holdouts as idiots. Just feels like there's some uncomfortable nationalism going on...

Interesting that AL will be the new home for the Ghibli films. It's hard to be excited over, since there's probably no way they will be anything other than ports of the existing GKids discs with, hopefully, some 4K upgrades here and there. It's a shame that we can't get Criterion-style releases with good new extras and documentaries like How Princess Mononoke Was Born (a 6 1/2 hour making of!) but alas...

I don't think it's baffling - Takashi Yamazaki also directed The Eternal Zero, which as nationalistic a film that has come out of Japan this century.

As someone without a 4K TV, I'm not only not excited by the Ghibli catalogue acquisition, I'm kind of annoyed. This is going to be another stack of re-releases clogging up the schedule, and for movies that most of us old gits on the forums have probably bought multiple times already. They will have to be lavish releases on a near unprecedented scale for me to even consider re-buying my favourites. A few artcards or a 16-page booklet aren't going to cut it.

Good grief, I really am being a miseryguts recently. Maybe it's because I signed up for Anime Unlimited last year, and the only thing they've released so far this year that I've wanted is Otaku Elf. I've already cancelled the subscription renewal.
