UK Anime Distributor Anime Limited Discussion Thread

I got the GKIDS Steelbook from CR this week. It's really nice.

AL got to pay the bills I guess, and if the shounen stuff helps them do that, good for them. I just wish it wasn't entirely at the expense of everything they have that interests me.
I've genuinely been wondering how much of that is down to the new 'owners'. Exacerbated by the fact the shape of the market now means they have to run with whatever Crunchyroll isn't/beats them to.

Bitter as I am about the handling of a certain mecha franchise, I'm sure the Shonen Jump stuff leaves it dead in a ditch if sales are compared.

Me getting increasingly desperate for AL to give us 0080.
At this point I'm wondering if there's anyone left for AL to negotiate with for additional Gundam titles now that Right Stuf is dead. It made sense for Right Stuf to sub-licence to a UK distributor since they don't have a presence here, but Crunchyroll would be actively helping their local competitor profit by doing so. We know that Crunchyroll don't care about doing physical releases of catalogue titles, but I wouldn't put it past them to sit on a licence rather than let anyone else make money from it.

I'm certainly of the view that Crunchyroll throwing Nozomi off a cliff has played a major part in the Gundam delays. Especially if they're having to handle the gargantuan episode counts of Shonen Jump shows. Priorities, limited staff, etc.

Of course there's still the snag of them continuously promising more Gundam is totally coming, honest. Which as has been highlighted in this thread is an empty promise they've made for a number of non Gundam titles and the root of my frustration as a fan. I'm genuinely sympathetic concerning the things that are beyond their control (Crunchyroll sabotage, licensor holder not playing ball, etc). But when all we hear is promises that more is coming when it essentially isn't, it's exhausting and frustrating.

ALs licence for Gundam comes directly from Sunrise, it's not sublicenced from Nozomi.

Ex-Arms is getting a collector’s edition and Anime Limited’s own social media team were making jokes about it. It's fine for people to be anxious about progress on the major licenses they've acquired and projects that seem to have stalled.

Getting stuff like Naruto and Bleach is obviously a huge boon for Anime Limited and I don't begrudge them focusing on making these a priority. I also can't begrudge people who really like Cardcaptor Sakura, Inuyasha or Gundam being annoyed.

But they've always to my understanding had to sublicense for masters. Note in particular that Iron Blooded Orphans specifically was the Funimation release, right down to trailers. It seems to be the case that Sunrise/Bandai Namco gave Nozomi the masters, Nozomi did the work of subbing them and such and then AL sublicensed that work from them. Most infamously when Sunrise gave Nozomi the TV broadcast cuts for SEED HD there had to be a delay in the AL release as they waited for Nozomi to get the Blu-ray masters instead.

They have done some masters themselves too like the badly done Unicorn set, NT and G-Reco.

I'd have to double check but I'm fairly certain Reco predates Nozomi getting it. Back in 2014 it was actually unprecedented that AL offered Reco for paid streaming and they went on to leverage it for Blu-ray. That was essentially the precursor to them being the general home of Gundam in the UK.

As for NT...still think that was a rushjob to meet a French release window. Doesn't even have the fun extras from the US release.

NT is also the theatrical version and not the home video version.

Nozomi also used the AL masters for their discs for G Reco.

Iirc AL didn't start using the Nozomi masters until after Zeta got delayed extremely badly waiting on the French subs to be done. Iinm the subtitles ended up being delivered 9-10 months behind schedule.

Sometimes I wonder if I should just try to get Victory Gundam from Japan instead of waiting to see if a UK release is possible. It be very expensive but after spending a lot of money on Anime Limited’s Gundam release over the years maybe it doesn’t make much of a difference.

On a more positive note Project A-Ko arrived today. Very happy to see it includes a paper insert advertising Anime Limited’s lineup and other merchandise. As someone who enjoys watching trailers on home media I’m glad they are doing that. Yes tell people that they can buy Cyber City and Evangelion. Every little helps.

I’ve got zero standards; I’ll buy and watch anything once.
Case point 1: I’ve been getting the Bleach (and Naruto) CE releases. I haven’t watched a single episode of Bleach. In fact; I don’t think I’ve even seen my promos or trailers.
Case point 2: One of my growing piles is Gundam. Half LEs and half from AL’s BOGOF sales. I recall calculating that there are several hundred hours pending in that pile alone, and the most (closest thing) I’ve watched is my Macross set from decades ago.
Case point 3: I diligently buy any and all of MVM’s DotW offerings (and all the stuff they had in clearance). Some is really bad (and some are absolute gem, far more deserving of a CE than Netflix stuff). But I still add them to the shelf in the alphabetical location.

My main issue with the bleach sets at the moment is that the releases seem a bit lacking in the CE department: I did consciously opt to try the ‘first press’ versions for the (three, tiny) cards (and sleeves), but it’s so minor and half hearted that I won’t bother again.
Sure; the first comes with a box and artbook (but it’s more a B&W sketchbook, with a handful of simplistic colour illustrations at the end).
The rest (aside from the sleeve and cards) are just on-disc OP/ED, gallery, and dub(!) commentary.

I’ve yet to decide if I start watching once pt5 ‘completes’ the first set, or if I need to wait for the rest first.

I liked Naruto for a time but dropped off after the time skip. There were a number of story decisions that felt like Kishimoto was wasting time, to the point I don't have the nostalgia that is making many clearly want these disc releases.

As for Bleach....I like Rukia.
