UK Anime Distributor Anime Limited Discussion Thread

While we're all complaining having thoughts...

Inuyasha Season 1 - November 2021

Inuyasha Season 2 - May 2024

Inuyasha Season 3 - ?????????
I would like to point out the episode count of the 2nd, being 3 lower than the US release, are we to see those eps spread over later sets or is it to be more sets than the Viz released?

I've got the Discotek release of Project A-ko but I kinda want the AL one as a big retro anime guy for the artbox and the Jonathan Clements article. It's a lot to pay for an artbox and a 12 page booklet though (Continues to hum and ha further). 🤔

I have the Discotek too as I got it before AL announced theirs, but I will still get AL's standard edition just because I greatly prefer the thicker and sturdier UK style cases. Discotek's packaging always seems a little cheap to me; they tend to use low quality cases that I end up replacing, and their slips aren't very well made or printed, and I absolutely hate their slips after they started doing them with the rounded corners as the one on A-ko is; I just throw those rounded corner ones in the trash so them having slips now isn't any selling point for me.

Since they announced a second Bleach box set, has AL confirmed anything about fixing the Viz Media Blu-rays from Set 7 onward? Set 7 is when the really bad Viz upscale begins.

Given the lack of other stuff coming out, I've been assuming it's all hands on deck to create their own masters for the Shonen Jump stuff.

The masters they're using will be coming from the same source. They're just encoding the discs themselves since Viz's work is notoriously awful.

@cfx Maybe you can answer a question for me. What size and brand cases do you replace Discotek ones with? I've had a problem with cracked cases from them on my last few orders from Crunchyroll and one order from Animeigo on Disco titles. I assumed maybe I'd just had bad luck but given your issues with them maybe not. If i could find out which ones fit yours that'd be great. I just ordered a 4 disc viva elite one to replace Bismarck's cracked case but I'm not entirely sure if I chose the right one or not.

That should be correct. I only have one or two Discotek sets with 4 discs but they came in Viva Elites. Even if yours is in something else, it should be the same thickness.

For their single or 2 disc sets, Viva Elites are also the right size and what I use for replacements as I think they're the best made ones available in the standard US sizes. They should be the 12.5mm size, but that's the most common for them.

I don't know who makes the cases Discotek typically uses for the single and 2 disc cases, but they're awful. The most obvious way to identify them is the blu-ray logo is just dull silver paint on them instead of the hot press foil thing on other cases. The hub design in these cases can crack the center area of discs, which was a common problem on one or two Discotek releases, and for a while after that I thought they started using better cases but that didn't last.

From what I've gotten so far, the new Animeigo is also using these poor quality cases.

Out of curiosity, what is unique about the disc hubs in those discotek cases?
I would normally think that the ‘soft’ plastic used in most BR cases would avoid any potential damage to the PC disc.
On reflection, I guess that’s a particular advantage of the long-arm-pair that Amaray use (or the joined-tripod types).
But I have cases with a vast array of different hub designs. Off the top of my head, there are 4-arrow (and 4-blank) clips,5-arrow versions, ones that have the arms twist, ones that have a single button clip in a circle,.. Pretty endless variations.
Any concern is usually that the design causes some deformation of the inlay (the lever action or void), that the small details cause result in more fragile weaknesses, or that it’s particularly resistant to releasing the disc.

It's that last part. The hub design is such that it doesn't really give when you press on it. I suspect it's also likely that it's either slightly out of spec where the diameter is too large, or that it otherwise puts stress on the disc. These cases are also made from a much more rigid plastic that is not nearly as soft as used in other cases, which is why they so often arrive broken or cracked. I can't remember for certain which title it was now but I think it was either Dear Brother or one of the Lady Oscar volumes, where multiple people received one particular release with the discs cracked when they received them; pictures were posted of this somewhere that I saw. So either the discs cracked while in the case, or somehow got cracked as they were assembled into those cases.

The Amaray "yin-yang" hub design and the "triangle within a circle" that Sony has used for Playstation games since the PS2 are some of the best designs, as they let the disc pop off when you press them, so you don't have to pull on the disc and have it flex. But the design Viva uses seems fine as well.

Your post has just explained to me why the centre of my Daltanious discs arrived cracked twice in the centre. I definitely remember hearing about the Dear Brother releases that had the same issue. Daltanious is one of my all-time favourite super robot shows (I reviewed it on Retro Mecha Podcast with @Orgun) so that was more than a little bit disappointing that I had to return it twice.

Thanks for the informative posts. I'm aware of a lot of the different case designs but am glad I now know that's what's been causing the cracked discs. The 4 way viva one i ordered has a 14mm spine so it'll probably be too big.

No it should be fine. The 12.5mm is for single or 2-disc sets. 4-disc cases are approximately the same thickness as the standard UK cases, which I think are stated to be 15mm, so that sounds right. I only have one or two Discotek sets of 4 discs, but they're in that thicker case.

No need to daydream?

The Italian edition of The Colors Within is listed with English & German dub & sub. The German edition is a store exclusive. Both include a special features disc & OST.
I guess it's quite likely that the Anime Ltd release will look quite close to one of these - and given the fact that the Italian & German releases are scheduled for June will be announced & released very soon.

Oh that is beautiful.

I really hope the UK gets it sooner rather than later.

Ive never understood how they can get 1 series of an anime, and then crunchyroll the rest, rent a girlfriend for example, whats the point in that?
S1 was when Crunchyroll licensed stuff but worked with whoever for home releases. So Sentai was distro in the US, AnimeLimited in the UK

S2 onwards was when Crunchyroll decided to do things their way and release everything themselves

How long does it take for alltheanime to respond to emails. I made an order on the 11th of April and still none of it has been dispatched. I at least normally receive some sort of correspondence through email or X when I message them, but nothing.....
