UK Anime Distributor Anime Limited Discussion Thread

This is the thing that worries me, especially now they're no longer fully independent. The idea they're scooping up and prioritising stuff that would have been the domain of Manga or a Crunchyroll that actually cared about the UK.

Hearing that multiple volumes of Bleach are ready to go whilst other titles including ones they've been involved with for years merit not even a peep...

ugh, this really peeves me. Blecch(!) is probably the reason they gave up on releasing We Rent Tsukumogami that I was hounding them repeatedly to release for the last 5 years, and they kept promising it was in the works - until their license for it probably expired. I couldn't give two squats about Blecch.

I don't care for Naruto nor Bleach (not saying they are bad, long-running battle shounen just aren't my thing just like western movies are not my thing) so I feel your pain. It annoys to me no end how they said that people have nothing to worry about regarding them releasing Kakegurui's second season only to never release it. Like, people expressed worry about AL not releasing Kakegurui's second season due to AL having a track record of not licensing and releasing second seasons of March Comes in Like a Lion and Amanchu and AL says "Let's just say you don't have anything to worry about in that regard in Kakegurui's case" only to never give any updates or news regarding the release of second season and then just never releasing it. I guess their license for it either expired or they just quietly gave up on ever releasing it.

As much as I agree that Bleach and Naruto (both of which I have less than zero interest in) have likely taken up significant time and effort away from the things we might think are or interesting (or even worthy) its probably fair to recognise that these releases will be popular (particularly in physical retail such as HMV) and will fill the AnimeLtd coffers to go and license the weird and wonderful we all want.

Of course we'll never know but if people buying Bleach means they could afford to go get Carole & Tuesday then I can live with it.

I would love to see them maintain a public Schedule with a "announced but not dated" section to confirm what they are actively working on (that has been confirmed).

This is the juggling act. I dropped off Naruto long ago (Part 2 saw me off) but the Shonen Jump stuff remains evergreen in popularity and thus surely rakes in more cash for the company than various titles some of us would prefer.

On that general subject, and I know it was just last December when AL released season 1, but do we know if they're going to release season 2 of The Eminence in Shadow? Or do I need to get the Sentai version from the US?

Does anyone know if the customer service staff were away at the latest convention or if the are back in their offices now? My collectors edition of Blue Giant is freezing and skipping so I emailed them on the 22nd, got a reply asking me to check for scratches and try it in another player which I did and replied straight away but I haven't had any other replies since :(

THIS. I've waited for AL to release March Comes in Like a Lion S2 and didn't import the US version. Still no news (aside from a repeated "We're working on it") and the US version is now OOP and costs $2000 on eBay nowadays while I could've gotten it for just $100. Because of this I've started importing from the US on a regular basis and if something isn't released within a year after the US version, I'll just import it. Much less risk of missing out.

And I realize some things are outside of AL's control (the silent treatment from Aniplex for several years comes to mind), but that's exactly why companies should be careful with promising things they can't guarantee to fulfill.

I've said this before but I feel AL are guilty of the same thing that hurt ADV- promising more titles than they can realistically bring to completion and as a result losing consumer confidence. I always preface my criticisms with open acceptance there's probably various specifics we'll never hear of, but for years now they've kept promising on various fronts and not delivering. And as highlighted this leaves fans up a creek without a paddle because by the time AL confirms they actually won't be bringing a long promised title to the UK, alternative means are long gone.

For me personally I wish I'd pounced on obscure Nozomi drops like Gundam-san because at the rate AL are going I've lost a lot of enthusiasm and keep expecting to hear they've lost what ownership they had of Gundam here. Not helped by in recent years they've been making Macross their priority mecha focus.

Yeah I agree with this. It does seem they're biting off more than they can chew. They'd get far more of my money if they'd release more retro shows as well but alas we seem to get only a handful of pre 2000's anime every few years and meanwhile the US has stuff that's not even on disc in Japan currently. I totally agree about the lack of transparency forcing people to go elsewhere. It used to be that about 70% of my purchases were from the US because I'm more of an enthusiast of retro anime. Even though I do enjoy newer stuff, I've just been chasing a big backlog of decades worth of unreleased titles that America is finally putting out on disc as an older fan who got into it young. That remaining 30% though....the newer stuff? I used to be picking that up from AL however now I find they're not really releasing that much that I enjoy on that front either.

I've been a bit out of the loop regarding news with not being on the forum for a while but are they really focusing on Macross? if that's the case they don't seem to be doing too good a job with it considering it's only really Zero and Plus that have come out (and the Plus release as documented here wasn't exactly well handled).

It's how it feels to me at least. The only Gundam stuff they've done in recent memory were the Freedom and GQuuuuuuX theatrical releases and those seem to have more been a case of Bandai bringing them in because (to give AL their due) they really push the boat out with theatrical releases. Other than that I think it's just the HD movie trilogy set, which was forced to use archaic subs by Sunrise and had a booklet full of errors and typos.

In contrast in recent history Macross seems to be getting a lot of dedicated attention from them.

Yep, it's a shame. I have been waiting for this movie ever since the first trailer was released and I have been daydreaming about what kind of beautiful Collector's Edition AL will give to it.

No need to daydream?

The Italian edition of The Colors Within is listed with English & German dub & sub. The German edition is a store exclusive. Both include a special features disc & OST.
I guess it's quite likely that the Anime Ltd release will look quite close to one of these - and given the fact that the Italian & German releases are scheduled for June will be announced & released very soon.

sadly neither of these seem to include the Garden of Remembrance short film like the GKIDS release.

Sooooo pretty and lovely! 😍

Ive never understood how they can get 1 series of an anime, and then crunchyroll the rest, rent a girlfriend for example, whats the point in that?

I think sometimes they're at the whims of what the production committee/studio feel is in their own interest. I know there have been cases where season 1 of a show has gone to one service, exploded in popularity and then the rights for season 2 have been sold to a different streaming service.

From my own firsthand experience, a lot of the production side of anime can be cutthroat internationally. It's a way to make money for them, nothing more. Some will quite happily put a bigger licensing fee first and leave their initial regional partner to face irate fans.

@HellCat Wasn't exactly sure what you were getting at in regards to A-ko. Were you saying you picked up AL's release of A-ko to illustrate the point you don't enjoy being negative about AL? Just felt I missed some context.

@Dave1988 It's incredibly annoying when 2 separate companies release something and their releases aren't even remotely similar. Like one company puts out a big fat collector's box using the official logo and some other company releases it in a standard set with their own completely different design with a huge BBFC logo bigger than the title and the text looks completely different alongside the other set.

Not that I'm OCD or anything :D

Got the AL release of A-Ko just before the Early Bird ended. A case of partially putting my money where my mouth is.

@HellCat I thought that's what you meant but just wanted to double check just in case.

I've got the Discotek release of Project A-ko but I kinda want the AL one as a big retro anime guy for the artbox and the Jonathan Clements article. It's a lot to pay for an artbox and a 12 page booklet though (Continues to hum and ha further). 🤔
