UK Anime Distributor Anime Limited Discussion Thread

Well, that makes a bit of an organisational mess. Wouldn’t it have been better to label the CE as part 1&2 (combined)?

After a few more sets, the numbers will be diverging further. Ok, it’s not hard to just divide / multiply by two, but you shouldn’t have to for ‘paired’ releases by the same company.

Although I’m not saying I expect many people to plan to mix CE and standard.
 
So I've just been watching some of the episodes of Naruto from the recent Anime Limited set, and like the good detective I am, I'm wondering if I've come across the reason why Anime Limited were unhappy with the initial subtitles they received.

I fired up a digital copy of the first episode from VIZ's release and compared the subtitles between Anime Limited and VIZ, and they were exactly the same, word for word.

However, I then had the idea to load up Crunchyroll and compare the subtitles they had for Naruto on there. Lo and behold, the subtitles on Crunchyroll are rather questionable to say the least, see here for example:

The above line is from Crunchyroll, in the first episode where Iruka is berating Naruto for using the "Sexy Jutsu" in class. The corresponding line in the AL/VIZ release is:

"You idiot! Stop doing idiotic jutsu!"; which makes a lot more sense than making idiotic spells!

In the Crunchyroll subtitles, there are also some uses of the word ninja rather than shinobi, the CR subtitles also include the classic "Believe it!" phrase when Naruto is running away, after graffitiing the Hokage stone faces.

There are a host of other oddities in the Crunchyroll subtitles that seem to have been cleaned up in the VIZ/AL subtitles.

I wonder if Anime Limited initially received a version of the subtitles that Crunchyroll has used, hence the delay, and ended up getting the VIZ subtitles for their release. If I had popped in the disc and seen "stop making idiotic spells!" I probably would have thrown the discs out of my window.

We rightly criticise Anime Limited, so it's only right we say well done for not using horrible subtitles 😂

As far as I remember, Crunchyroll used the VIZ DVD subtitles some years ago. Don't know if Crunchyroll changed them or VIZ did some corrections for their Blu-rays.

VIZ definitely cleaned up the subtitles for their Blu-rays.

Another example was Naruto saying "Darn..." on the CR subtitles, whereas on the VIZ/AL Blu-rays it's "Damn it...".

It wouldn't surprise me if AL initially received old subtitles from the VIZ DVDs or some other older release.
 
Anyone else still waiting for Bleach boxset 1 to ship? It's due out on Monday and i ordered it back during the August Early Bird special.

I'm still waiting on Naruto too but that's a bit further out.

I am but they seem to be shipping a lot of stuff at the moment so may be it's done in batches. Naruto, Bleach TYBW, and Arcane at least all went around the same time as Bleach.

In my opinion, they're both very similar in terms of quality. The amount of upscaling they were able to do is limited by the source material being standard definition for both series. It's not going to look like a modern, native 1080p anime.

That being said, the improvements are there to see; the image is sharper and crisper compared to the DVDs, for both series. If I had to pick one over the other, I'd say the upscale is better on Bleach; in my viewing experience for Naruto I have noticed some artefacts, on a couple of occasions, running down the side of the image (against the black bars), which I'm guessing is a result of the upscaling process. It's not ideal, but doesn't detract too much as they're not present long and Naruto does still look good. The Naruto DVD masters were known to have a lot of funny business going on in them in terms of the image anyway; which the upscale does help to fix. I haven't noticed anything funky on the Bleach set yet.

Realistically, these are probably as good as it's going to get on home video for these series.

The biggest upgrade however, is actually in terms of the audio for both sets. Both sets have a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 track for both English and Japanese; meaning that the audio is lossless, resulting in a higher quality audio track. There's definitely more of a kick and greater clarity to the audio compared to the DVDs, which used compressed, lossy audio tracks.

I'd just be wary not to expect too much from these upscales. While they are on Blu-ray and upconverted to 1080i (Naruto) and 1080p (Bleach), it's clear to see that the material is from the early days of digital animation and originally created in standard definition. Despite that, the upscale is very much noticeable and looks good on both in my opinion.

Tbh mine wasn't well packed from AL either.

It arrived in an oversize UPS mailer padded with 4 small airbags(all burst) loose in the box and nearly broke out of it. Thankfully the set itself was also wrapped in bubble wrap and undamaged.

If I think about the UK retailers that I buy physical releases from, very few, if any, use bubble-wrap in their packaging as standard like Anime Limited do. Although, I would expect a business that sells boutique or collectible Blu-rays to use protective material.

Every place I buy from usually just sling it in a cardboard envelope or small box and that's it. Sometimes you might get a padded jiffy bag. To be fair though, I've never had anything (Blu-ray wise) damaged to the extent that I felt I needed to return it.

Thankfully it sounds like the bubble-wrap saved yours.

The worst I got from AL was the Escaflowne UE. It arrived with a broken inner box and I got it replaced, which was also broken. Tbf the main issue with that was poor design rather than shipping damage.
 
Anime limited are top tier with packaging from my experience all other U.K. stores are terrible and Amazon is the worst, if AL don’t sell something I’ll try to find a seller on eBay that’ll ship with a box and bubblewrap
 
According to a comment by Anime Limited on their Facebook page, Bleach (2004) set 2 is going up for pre-order next Thursday.

Not sure if they mean this Thursday coming or Thursday next week though.
