UK Anime Distributor Anime Limited Discussion Thread

For me, with soundtracks, part of the reason why I appreciate them is that anime music is usually pretty difficult to acquire legally in the West, apart from those select few OP themes that do get put up on iTunes etc.
Well CDs are region free and there are no language barriers so there shouldn't be anything stopping you from importing...

Sony Music Entertainment (owners of Aniplex) tend to be quite good at making their (non-rare) stuff available digitally, but I have also seen VAP and PonyCan releases up on iTunes. So I wouldn't assume it's just the select few that are available either.

I quite like soundtracks, they're good for when I'm doing household chores (& I clean .. a lot so they get good use), I also love hardback books and art cards, so Anime Limited are doing everything I would like so I have no complaints. I might be in the minority but I have no issues with packaging either. To further the worth of soundtracks to myself: I wasn't that keen on No Game No Life but if MVM secure the soundtrack then they'll get a sale from me (plus, I would like to revist the show as I think I may have been a little too critical)

The only collectors type items I don't care for are things like badges or clothes type items (eyepatches, etc), I can see their worth though, if you're 15 and wanna be a unique snowflake. Not for me though.

I don't like soundtracks because if I was into the show before the UK release (which generally I will be, unless it somehow flew completely under the radar in every way) I will already have heard the music and bought the OST from Japan if I liked it, so it's a waste. The sole exceptions are the LE-exclusive CDs which foreign distributors rarely get as they came with the individual volumes in Japan. Those are definitely worth buying a LE for a lot of the time. Heck, I've bought entire BD sets just for some of these rare CDs before. Standard commercial soundtracks are not interesting to the hardcore who regularly import music, and arguably not that interesting to the super casual people who pirate everything nowadays either. The Japanese editions tend to be better and contain full lyric sheets too.

Artbooks with text have the advantage that they might be the only English-translated version of that material around, which gives them an inherent value even if they're just copypasted from the Japanese editions and light on data.

Art cards are nice as something which is relatively cheap/easy to produce yet increase the feeling that you're getting a physical bonus, assuming the show has nice artwork.

I don't care for gimmicky apparel but some badges or accessories turn out nicely enough. Stationery is always a nice bonus too, in that it's not very exciting yet I'd actually use it rather than having it take up space in my cramped house.

One thing that did very much interest me from previous discussions was talk of original content like essays penned by people like Jonathan Clements - ie. Stuff you can engage with and consume that's more than just pretty pictures (as nice as those are). I love art books but I do sometimes feel it's a bit 'quick flick through, nice, then back in the box' but then I'm the type of person that very much equates value with amount of time spent consuming the content.

I agree with this 100%, I often find myself rereading the Arrow/MoC/Criterion/BFI/etc booklets every time I watch the film. It would also be interesting to get the perspective of a Japanese critic on some titles.

Though a good book(let) doesn't necessarily have to be original content; there's quite a lot of writing by people like Yoshiyuki Tomino and Satoshi Kon that hasn't yet been translated and would be great to see included with a relevant release. I'm a huge fan of the Miyazaki books Starting Point and Turning Point, but most other directors don't have the same brand recognition to get two volumes of essay collections published.

For a recent example, I actually found the Anime Ltd 009 Re Cyborg booklet really good as even though it's slim, it's absolutely packed full of text/interviews that elaborate on the show, it's production and the world. Anything that adds to your understanding of the show is always a plus with me.

A tad off topic but is this page of this thread kind of broken for anyone else? Every other thread looks fine it's just this one. The top post is fine but then all the other posts are weirdly stretched out

I think I've fixed it, the nested formatting tags weren't playing nice together. As a side effect everyone is now forced to see the gorgeous Gundam The Origin art (oh no!).

There's a new Newswire online http://blog.alltheanime.com/newswire37/

With AL at MCM Scotland next week, maybe we can expect some more announcements. I'm personally hoping AL will be able to simulcast the new Gundam series starting in 2.5 weeks time. The general consensus in the US seems to be that they (Sunrise/Nozomi) won't simulcast it, but we got Rec G and they didn't (or at least it wasn't widely available in the US), so it would be nice if AL could do the same again...

I marathoned Terror in Resonance yesterday on Netflix and it far exceeded my expectations, becoming one of my all time favourites. A note perfect few hours that reads as a timely, cautionary tale about modern Japan and the constitutional debate as well as the United States' continued military presence.

Looking forward to the release; you have my purchase!

I keep meaning to watch this but i always put it off.Im gonna have bite the the bullet and make a start because I did the same with Your Lie in April and Rokka:Braves of the six Flowers and after I regretted not watching it sooner.(Plus it's made by Mappa who are one of the better studios to emerge in recent years imo)

Is the ultimate edition of full metal panic going to be limited in number like that of gurren lagann?

Anime Limited Hi, good question! As was the case with previous Ultimate Edition releases of ours, this is indeed a limited release. There will only be 1000 units of the Full Metal Panic Ultimate Edition. But these 1000 units will be spread out across all retailers.

Glad I got my pre-order in for FMP then if it's limited!

Has anyone else that's received their SAOII notice on the front of the digipak itself it only lists titles for episodes 1-5 (skips 6) and then 7? Just a little niggle. The box and silver design is gorgeous. One of the best looking anime releases I have ever owned.

Havent received mine but I can believe it. The old adage is, check, double check and then check again.

In the place I work when we order training brochures etc, we have to sign off on the final design prior to print, and this will feature all the text as it will appear on the finished product, i'm assuming most printers use this same process?

edit - can be seen here
