UK Anime Distributor Anime Limited Discussion Thread

I think an Evangelion Ultimate Edition is an obvious one. It's hard for me to say, all my favourite shows are already owned by other UK companies. Stuff like Madoka, Steins;Gate, FMA:B, K-On, etc are all shows I'd want a really great UE of but are all owned by Manga. I guess Kiniro Mosaic but I think I'd be the only one buying that haha.
Hey, they'd get at least two customers for the Kinmoza Ultimate Edition.

I'm not sure if there are a lot of things I'd like to see specifically as an Ultimate Edition. Natsume's Book of Friends/Natsume Yujin Cho would probably work because it's a long series (I'm not sure if it's quite old enough though). I guess some of Mushi-shi is quite new but an Ultimate Edition including both series and the specials/movie could work.

There are certainly a lot of things I'd like to see released (Collector's Editions would be nice) but I guess the criteria for "Ultimate" are going to be more strict in the future. It would be great to see stuff like Nichijou, Shirobako, Dennou Coil and so on but I'm not sure if they'd qualify for an Ultimate Edition.

Related to the FMP release, I don't really mind the amarays. I think I quite like them really, plus they'd be handy if you want to have the discs out somewhere convenient when you're going to be watching them.

I forgot about Shirobako and Nichijou, I'd like to see AL tackle those too in some kind of fancy UE. I also think that Amarays are better than digipacks. Sure, Digipacks look nicer but Amarays are so much more convenient and less likely to get damaged.

It'd be amazing if they could get either of those, but I think we'd be lucky to just get a standard release. :(

A lot of the Japanese Collector's Editions are digipacks but there are some that use amaray cases. The ones I've seen include:

Baccano!
Bakemonogatari
FREEDOM
Garden of Sinners (Standard Edition Box Set)
Gunbuster vs Diebuster: Aim for the Top! GATTAI!!
Lucky Star
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (Season 1 & 2 Box Set & Season 1 Broadcast Box Set)
Nisemonogatari + Nekomonogatari Black

Amarays in the FMP Ultimate Edition? Oh no...
An Ultimate Edition is a bespoke product. The digipacks in the Giovanni and Patema UEs look and feel like some serious effort has gone into them, along with loving attention to detail. Amaray's on the other hand are something I associate with cheap mass production, so they look and feel completely out of place to me.
I do understand why AL have done this, after the GL fiasco they probably never want to see another digipack ever again, and I know they can't please everyone, but I still feel disappointed. It looks like the rest of the set will be of the usual high standard though so I will still be buying it, it's just going to take me a while to get used to it.

The issue is a cost one - we've put them inside a massive foam holder which is cool and branded so I don't think you'll feel they are out of place when you see them. All will be revealed in due course but they're really worth it actually and there's a lot of love and attention still involved but while I test the capabilities I want to be 100% sure all Ultimate Editions arrive in complete pristine condition as far as we can this time :).

We're experimenting with other options as we go but the foam option precluded a rigid interior + Digipack and a Digi on it's own even at small size could fray over time taking it out of the foam fitment.

Every iteration is a learning one though so we're looking forward to fan feedback - don't think folks will be disappointed though :)!

Amarays are more in keeping with Japanese deluxe editions, from what I've seen?

No All my JP CE's are digipacks UBW, Sailor Moon Crystal and I think NGE and my DBZK14 will be digipacks

He means the Japanese FMP - which does come with amarays too - which is totally correct in that case it does :). It doesn't however come in a huge box with full sized book and a really cool storage box for the amarays in that case :D.

Maybe I have a standard edition of the JP Baccano BD box but mine came with a digipack and a booklet, not an amaray. GITS SAC and 2nd GIG, on the other hand, have black amarays for the Standard ed and white amarays for the special edition

Ah yeah you're right my bad. I got them mixed up with Aniplex of America. I knew Durarara!! was using digipacks.

Oh that makes sense I still think my JP CE that are digipacks are better than my few Amaray JP editions

I don't mind about digipacks - the GL thing really was just poor luck for Anime Limited, in the end it looks awesome. I don't recall having any issues with digipacks other than Gurren Lagann and it was due to the manufacturing mishap not the actual design. I welcome either digipacks or amarays, as long as the set overall looks good - although with regards to amarays, i do like it when they are not the standard blue colour

Yup, the Japanese set for comparison sake:

Yukikaze LE also comes with amaray cases as I own it.

Well IMHO seeing as the AL version is bigger - which means the art book can be larger then there is already the possibility of the set exceeding the quality of the JP release. I don't know... maybe my eyes are getting lazy in my old age but nice big pictures are a mandatory requirement in art books for me...

edit: Also on Amray vs digipack I'm generally on the Amray side they seem less prone to damage although I do like my Amray art double sided and ideally reversible. (Almost all Funi LE's are Amrays...)

Yeah with regards to size i preder boxsets be the BD size in terms of height
(Obviously a bit taller so to make space for amarays or digipacks) so there's consistency in sizes on my shelf but still, I am really looking forward to his FMP release

Yes that looks amazing sadly I don't ATA version will look as good

Design is really pretty subjective in terms of taste and I'm never going to be able to make everyone happy :).

That said, if we had access to that set's graphics we could and would have introduced it. However the artwork was exclusively for Japanese use - we actually tried to access it but even at a fee it's impossible so we worked with what we had (you'll not see the artworks used anywhere else in the Western world interestingly).

Barring that the JP set doesn't offer so much of interest for fans though interestingly so instead what we did was reworked every asset regardless of age available, then spend a painstaking amount of personal time on my part reworking it all into a usable format that gives you a feeling of Full Metal Panic's overall universe.

Having bought every potential iteration of collector's version I could get my hands on I can safely say in the western world, nobody has exceeded what we've pulled off for this one in terms of quality. Folks mileage may vary though and I totally get that!

As you say Andrew design is really subjective so I'd like to say I prefer the AL design. Yes the JP edition box is probably better looking but everything else looks incredibly bland, especially the discs.

On a side note I also own the ADV singles in the artboxes (for season 1 & fumoffu) and they have some great artwork across all of them. I especially like the reversible covers for season one with the less militaristic and more colorful designs with the original Japanese logo! I don't think I've ever had the other covers displayed. But I digress! Reversible covers with Japanese logo ;) ;) ;)
