UK Anime Distributor Anime Limited Discussion Thread

It's disappointing, but I can't quite get my head around Sunrise's thinking. If AL/RightStuf release ZZ or Turn A on Blu-Ray, what detriment will it be to Sunrise? Blu-Ray is obviously the more niche format, so I'd argue that sub-only would be more of an argument in its favour rather than DVD's.

But THE CASE OF HANA & ALICE! Looking forward to seeing that again very much and I have my fingers crossed for an AL ultimate edition.

Turn A only came out Dec 24th Last year you can still get the JP BR sets now they don't want reverse importation which would cause a lot of damage as we pay £80-100 for all 50 eps its £150 for 25 of them

My one regret is I'd like ZZ and Turn A on Blu-ray because I got much more out of them. Zeta is a show aimed at the fans who liked the original show who had become angsty teens by that point. As a result it's full of that kind of self pitying 'everyone hates you' twaddle.

Just weighing in on the format thing:

Personally, I'm just grateful that ZZ is getting a release AT ALL. It's never been available for the home video market in the West, so I'm not about to complain.

As much as I appreciate dubs, I'll take a Gundam release in subs only format over nothing with a smile on my face.

And ZZ was released in 2009, so that's almost certainly not the reason.

I'm sorry but I am going to be another one to complain. This news was like an arrow through my heart. It's a load of crap.

I still think Andrew is great and I am a massive Gundam fan (which I'm sure he knows from my days reviewing all the Beez Gundam releases for the old AnimeonDVD), but this is horrible for me. In this day and age, if I am going to put my money down for a home video release, which I do frequently, I will only do so for BD. I have no interest in shows which are available in HD being released on DVD. I mean, what's the point? I'm not going to spend hundreds of pounds on DVD releases when I know a better version is available somewhere (and no, I'm not going to spend ridiculous £ on the JP sets).

It's the same reason I still haven't seen the Haruhi movie. Never imported it and the UK BD was cancelled in the end. I was kind of hoping that Manga's license to S2 and the movie would have expired and AL could do an ultimate edition, but hey, I'll take S1 on BD at this point.

But for Gundam, I would literally buy almost any of it on BD. Certainly Turn A and ZZ. But this news stinks and so no, no money for DVDs. I have waited a long time for decent releases of Gundam in the West, since before Bandai/Beez started the older stuff and even since they both went under. But frankly no, I'm not "grateful" to be getting it on DVD rather than nothing at all. Why should I be? To me DVD is the same as not having it at all. It's a shame, but I'm not even sure now if I'll buy Zeta. I have the original LE box set from Bandai, so it would presumably have the better subs, so might be worth it. But this news just puts me off completely. I would love to eventually see 0080 and MS 08th Team on BD as those are 2 of my favourites, but this news has really just put me off the Gundam releases completely at the moment.

Sorry for the rant, and I realise this is probably Sunrise's doing, but either way, I can only sum it up with one word. LAME.

The catch 22 is that if we as fans don't support these releases then it basically tells Sunrise (and Anime Limited, at least in terms of the bottom line) that there is no market for Gundam here. It's not like by ignoring these shows on DVD Sunrise are gonna say "My bad" and green light UK Blu-rays.

And just in a food for thought manner, it's not the worst fans have had to go through. I remember the absolute saga that was the US DVD release of Zeta, ending with people popping it in to find 'LOL GUYS, we didn't licence the OP or ED songs, soz!"

Indeed ^^

After sampling the release of Outlaw Star, I'm not against buying DVD only releases from AL, as long as their video is up to scratch. I just don't like the fact Sunrise are not releasing something that has already seen an HD release elsewhere, makes no sense, especially as you will alienate a lot of buyers who will avoid DVD only like the plague.

If this was a standard license, I could imagine AL releasing it on BD, but the fact that Sunrise are being so hands on with the handling of it worldwide means we have to just accept what they give us (or not buy it)

Its because ZZ won't sell its one of the least popular.

But, unless this is a strange licensing deal, the money would be AL's to lose - not Sunrise's. So what would their problem be?

So pretty much most of the franchise have been released on Blu-ray which is good. However only half of them have been dubbed in English by Bandai. The titles that are expected to hit the UK without an English dub will most likely end up DVD only, I say most likely as Gundam Reconguista in G has dodged the bullet unless however Sunrise intends on dubbing it sometime after Iron-Blooded Orphans. As for the English dubbed titles, most of them should hit the UK without any problems however SEED may cause an issue. From what I've heard the episodes in the Blu-ray remaster of both SEED & SEED Destiny are slightly different, making the English dub problematic when it comes to syncing the audio. I'm sure there's someone who can explain this better than I can but people on Fandom Post have said it's a problem.

Damn, that's fantastic. I wasn't sure I would be able to justify the steep £100 asking price but now I think I'll give it a shot. Providing I can still afford it when it releases.

This.

Thanks to our very own Buzzkillington, I managed to pick up the Anime Limited edition of Outlaw Star, and it's FANTASTIC.

I very much suspect that Anime Limited are going to have to work with whatever materials Sunrise provide them with. But that's going to be better than nothing by default, and I trust Andrew et al to deliver a decent product.

I've got to say as well - I do not understand the hang up over hi-def. Partly because I'm old enough to remember when just GETTING anime in the UK was a big deal, and you used to feel genuinely excited at the prospect of being able to own it at all. Back in the early '90s, I'd have had a frothing glee fit if somebody told me I'd be able to buy Zeta Gundam in its entirety. It's amazing how these attitudes change over time.

Tune in for my next post where I discuss how all of this used to be hills, and I fought in several world wars for you lot...

For me, I only buy things in HD now because I've gotten so used to how things look in HD that it is quite jarring and distracting for me to go back to inferior picture quality. A DVD is better than nothing, I get that, but in this day and age, DVD only should be unacceptable.
