UK Anime Distributor Anime Limited Discussion Thread

There's still something wrong feeling about that... OK, I get the Language is the same but being told I am more American than Italian...?

It's all about the language. We share a common tongue. It's nothing to do with "you're more American than Italian"....

Yes although it would be nice to be treated as a distinct Country, instead of having to rely on getting hand-me-downs from the US... I guess the market volume in the UK makes that difficult to justify... It just feels uncomfortable being "lumped in" with "the Americans"...

It's annoying that we are getting the same releases as the US as the Turn A DVD set does not look very nice and very collectors it doesn't feel like a ATA set unless they release a box set like MSG 79

I don't recall them saying it would be a collector's edition release, in fact I don't think any of these MSG releases are considered collector's edition. They may have limited runs whereby extras come with the first x amount of copies but I don't think we should be gearing up for Anime Limited style collector's editions with this lot.

AL have said they might be able to do a nice complete series collector's set for Turn A. From what Andrew said it'd probably just be nice packaging though.

Well maybe that's because it isn't?
Yes i know but ATA market is the collectors market most release get a collectors version then standard edition the gundam DVDs feel like they could go against this

I also expect andrew will see this forum tomorrow and have somewords to say hopefully to explain why we can't get a BR set
I am sure many of us will be able to both predict what he is going to say and will sympathise with his position in this situation but it won't change my position on the matter. I love AL for all they do, the events they put on and the products they offer thanks to their relationships with the rights-holders in Japan, (my shelf full of their titles can attest to that), but I cannot support a DVD-only release in this era.

I definitely don't I expect anyone to blindly support it - either it will work or it won't and either answer is as acceptable for me really :). If it doesn't work - well that is a strong point for future titles and the formats they take. Buyer beware though - there are more answers than simply make all Gundam releases become BD and another perfectly legitimate answer that could be selected by the licensor would be "Don't release shows X, Y & Z."

At the end of the day, this is ultimately a partnership I have a responsibility to give honest commercial advice to Sunrise about the sustainability of a title. Now if I had my way I'd do everything on BD full stop as the preferred format but when you're playing with someone else and their toys, you have to behave :).

More info on Turn A to come as I have it locked in too and as always, good to see the debate ongoing :)!

Andrew
I mentioned it on twitter earlier and I know you've spoken about Turn A before, but I'd love to see a BD for it - especially since it's apparently the only Gundam show done entirely on 35mm.

Completely understand - partnerships sometimes involve compromise (something I know all too well in my line of work). And, point taken re the 'dont release show x y and z' thing but still, i just would rather not buy DVD, that's just me.

thedoctober2016 - i don't think anyone doubted that Andrew wants a BD release for Gundam titles, if I was in his position, given that he's regularly reading all these open forums and can see what the preferred format is, I too would want blu-rays. But, there will be customers who, unlike me, will buy a DVD release and so to have that on offer is better than nothing, as others have stated.

I think making it DVD only is too risky as people may see the lower sales ( i expect it will be lower than Zeta and 0079) as a lack of interest of gundam in the UK so its a risky move on ATA's part

This is why I would encourage people to buy the original MSG on BR... Even if it is on the high end of things price wise, even if it's not the Gundam series you really want, if you can afford it, show support for the format and purchase it. If the BR series have 10x the sales figures of DVD-Only, Andrew will have a fairly strong argument to go back to them, show them a nice graph and say... "look... we need to do this stuff on BR... the DVD-Only stuff is not selling... sure some _could_ be attributed to different interest levels in different shows but a large chunk of the difference HAS to be down to format". We've got a great opportunity here with MSG to really show how important the format is to us UK consumers... You never know... with the first one being BR... that could have been Andrews goal all along...

Yes I hope 0079 sells a lot but I hope Turn A sells enough too so Sunrise will be willing to come back in the future and give us the BD release we deserve

Also why are they releasing recongista sub only on BR when its rated average and not Turn A which people think is one of the best.
Anime Limited licenced G Reco and as such have more control of how they release it, the other shows are part of a distribution deal with Sunrise.

Very much a damned if we do, damned if we don't scenario here. Buy DVDs and show Sunrise we're willing to just accept the weaker format and they release more on DVD only. On the other hand, of we don't buy the DVDs and potentially show Sunrise we want Blu-rays more, we also run the risk of them just seeing it as "some of the weaker shows won't sell over there, so let's not bother"

Buzz201 said:
Not buying the DVDs won't show Sunrise you want blu-rays, it will only say you don't want the product at all...

No, but not buying the DVD releases of Say Turn A or ZZ, but buying the Blu-Rays of MSG and Zeta will show them what people want...

I'll most likely be buying everything be it DVD or BD anyway.
