Didn't I see a box for MSG that looked nice and was kinda provisional? Is that off the table or still on and people are getting worked up about the art on the amray that goes inside the box?

Pretty sure the box to put both parts in is still happening, they haven't said otherwise. Like SAO2 it'll be included with Part 1.

I don't mind the amaray art while it's not the best, AL likely didn't have much to work with. The art being the same as the US release shows that Sunrise are only allowing AL/Rightstuf certain assets to do their releases.

Re box - 100% right, first 1,000 units will come with the box so you're sure to get it on Day 1 order. After that is always debatable - case in point being Tokyo Ghoul, which we're already out of stock at the warehouse on so as long as stock holds out at retailers is as long as it's available for (Amazon is down to about 30% of it's allocation now for example).

Andrew, can I be pushy and ask how much of Gundam your deal actually covers? Will you be releasing Iron Blooded Orphans in a few years time for example?

& people said there wasn't a market in the UK for collectors editions, pfft

Congrats on the success of Ghoul, it's great to hear.

Once Tokyo Ghoul CE is gone, is gone forever or will AL do another 1k? Or will it release it as a standar BD case with just the discs?

AL will release a standard BD edition once the CE sells out, which probably won't take long considering what Andrew has said above. Wouldn't surprise me if they put one out early next year. They won't re-print the CE once it sells out, once the 1000 units are sold that's it.

Anyone know how many copies were in the SAO run? Comparing the sales rank history with Tokyo Ghoul on Amazon for the 129 days it's been up makes it look like it must have sold a fairly hefty number of copies more.... And if that isn't at a OOP soon warning level it makes me assume more copies must have been made?

Correct! Using the shiny design cost a lot of scratch so I absorbed it by doing a lot more units - also given the history on AoA releases, we won't be able to do a complete or standard edition anytime soon so this seems a smart way to proceed.

Fear not, plenty of that one left :).

I presume it's because they're the English language rightsholders, but I would have preferred it if AL matched the design and contents of the Italian MSG release rather than the Right Stuf release. The books with each volume would have been great, as would have the interviews on Vol. 1 (though I would have preferred the 30th anniversary doc).

As far as I understood it, the point of doing distribution deals, rather than just licensing content was that Sunrise themselves would remain in control.

From what Andrew's been saying so far, it sounds like AL are choosing to or being asked to match RightStuf, rather than them having any formal relationship with RightStuf.

It sounds like Sunrise have set the contents of the RightStuf edition, and AL have been told to match it as much as possible. From the way they were talking about it on the podcast, it sounds like giving it a nice artbox is the most pushy change they could get away with. It definitely sounds like they're trying to give it as nice a package as they can, but are limited in the materials and options they have.

Matching RightStuf might work out for us though, if it turns out Gundam doesn't sell too well. (Though according to Andrew it's pre-sales and tracking are good.)

Yeah, who knows what goes on across the negotiating table but Sunrise mustn't have had any objections over the content of the Italian release so I don't see why they would put further restrictions on releases in a bigger market. Anime licensors never make any sense to me though!

Bear in mind Italy is a big market for anime. The US isn't, and high priced editions tend to put people off, so it doesn't really make sense to go all out on a US release.

I'm not sure I'd say the US isn't a big market for anime. It's certainly a heck of a lot bigger than the UK at any rate.

As Jerome put it on Twitter the other day, in the US a Collector's Edition will typically sell 1000 - 5000 copies. In the UK: more like 100 - 500 copies.

It's a larger country of course you'd sell more (and it roughly works out to 5x the population, 5x the amount of sales). I meant compared to the population size anime is a bigger deal in Italy.

Hence Italian distributors can be pushier and it's worth making more of an effort for Sunrise. Not only that, it previously got a release over there, there's probably a bunch of Italian translations of stuff just floating around they can use, whereas they'd probably have to re-translate and check anything used for an English-language release.

Harmony Gold will never die - they're like Sauron in the Lord of the Rings, they just keep coming back again and again. More's the shame...

Am aware of it, pitched it and was rejected on grounds of wanting as much consistency as possible. Had to fight my way to what folks are getting and we'll have a nice treat with box two for folks too :).
