UK Anime Distributor Anime Limited Discussion Thread

Advance notice- despite posting a ton of coverage from the May event (including all my Macross coverage being highlighted by the rights holder), for the first time I have been refused an MCM press pass. I know in recent years I've provided live coverage of AL announcements at the event but sadly this time (assuming AL will be there) that won't be possible :(
I've heard a lot of people have struggled with press passes this time. Sucks to hear it happen.

I do have to wonder if it's linked to them merging the event with EGX and simultaneously focusing on viral influencers. Suddenly having to add the EGX crowd to the tentative accepted list and changing the criteria to be more demanding.

Regardless, I take some comfort in hearing I'm not alone in being rejected. The last 18 months have been hard on a personal level, so having a matter of professional pride tarnished was unwelcome. Sucks for all affected but knowing I'm not alone softens the blow.

Laika 4K steelbook sets are the new preorders today.

Surprised it isn't the City Hunter: Angel Dust steelbook seeing as the French, German and Italian releases of that were just announced and the discs are English friendly.

They look good but steel books rarely look that good in reality.
I have a fairly large collection from years ago when I had space to display them on the walls but not bought one since unless it was the only option or cheaper.

I own all those films & don't see the need to upgrade but I'm all for AL doing some more mainstream releases to pay the bills.

Give me an amaray case over a steelbook any day. Although, I am aware I'm probably part of the minority in that department.

Also not a fan of this increased habit for distributors/licensors to lock the 4K behind a steelbook or deluxe edition for a year or more, before the standard edition 4K is eventually released.

Looks like AL are probably going to be the most expensive place for the Laika steelbooks as they've gone up on Zavvi for £29 each, which is significantly cheaper than AL even using the Unlimited discount.

The sets are £26.34 on Rarewaves

That's the most common theory out there. X number of passes and likely a rule where Y number must go to EGX related people.

City Hunter: Angel Dust is currently in a weird limbo at the moment, I tend to agree that chances are thats the disc we'll get (though, rip for fans who wanted the dub continued, one downside of not having Discotek handle it in the US). It's already had its run in France and such, but its a much, much bigger thing over there.

Really has had a somewhat weak appearance here, to my knowledge, its only appeared at a Cardiff film festival and was skipped over for SLA (franchise film, granted), same in the US, with a single festival appearance as far as I know.

Why are they even combining them? I'm not interested in EGX.
Willing to bet part of it is the difference in MCM post Brexit and the height of the pandemic. If you attended prior to those it's hard not to notice how MCM has kinda scaled back and no longer gets big announcements (bar Hasbro). Combining with EGX adds a bit more oomph and probably also helps split the cost of hiring out the ExCel.

With you on this one, its the main thing stopping me picking up Paprika, Godzilla -1 and Arcane on 4k as well as the Witch from Mercury sets. I'll just be miserable when they sell out and no standard edition is made available instead.

Find it a little odd they didn't do a 4k steelbook for Missing Link wonder why that was left out?

Anime Limited currently don't have the rights to Missing Link. I don't know any more with certainty, but it's possible that Lionsgate (who originally released it) might still have the rights. Similarly, when Anime Limited announced the Hosoda catalogue, it was missing The Boy and the Beast (which Plaion were only able to get for Germany and Italy)- presumably because StudioCanal still have that.

Exactly this. It took a few MCMs just to get a large amount of manga back. They obviously want to increase its profile as a result.
