UK Anime Distributor Anime Limited Discussion Thread

Why are they even combining them? I'm not interested in EGX.
Willing to bet part of it is the difference in MCM post Brexit and the height of the pandemic. If you attended prior to those it's hard not to notice how MCM has kinda scaled back and no longer gets big announcements (bar Hasbro). Combining with EGX adds a bit more oomph and probably also helps split the cost of hiring out the ExCel.

Give me an amaray case over a steelbook any day. Although, I am aware I'm probably part of the minority in that department.

Also not a fan of this increased habit for distributors/licensors to lock the 4K behind a steelbook or deluxe edition for a year or more, before the standard edition 4K is eventually released.
With you on this one, its the main thing stopping me picking up Paprika, Godzilla -1 and Arcane on 4k as well as the Witch from Mercury sets. I'll just be miserable when they sell out and no standard edition is made available instead.

Find it a little odd they didn't do a 4k steelbook for Missing Link wonder why that was left out?

Anime Limited currently don't have the rights to Missing Link. I don't know any more with certainty, but it's possible that Lionsgate (who originally released it) might still have the rights. Similarly, when Anime Limited announced the Hosoda catalogue, it was missing The Boy and the Beast (which Plaion were only able to get for Germany and Italy)- presumably because StudioCanal still have that.

Exactly this. It took a few MCMs just to get a large amount of manga back. They obviously want to increase its profile as a result.

I wouldn't be surprised to see it continue. Reedpop effectively only own MCM now because of Brexit. The original founders announced a year or so before 2016 that they were turning MCM into a cross European franchise but the referendum basically killed that and they unloaded it on a bigger convention power. And clearly between that and the pandemic (plus the impact of both on the entertainment industry as a whole) the twice yearly event is somewhat struggling. I can see a future where a bunch of events fall under the MCM event to soften costs and attract more attendees.

Which is definitely a shame in some regards. The more tagged in, the more it has to be with likely the same space. The stuff being sold either needs to draw in the niche audience well or appeal to so many different areas and thus become very generic.

And I think they've lost some manga at this one, just checked and viz media aren't listed as exhibitors, nor could I find the one that sells a lot of manga (who's name I can't remember), someone at work who has game dev friends told me that the industry pass is no longer free and they have to pay now.

Funnily enough, from what I can see on my end the stuff like schedules and exhibitor directory no longer works on the app unless you've bought a ticket.

Never mind I was thinking of traveling man limited and they are going (still can't find viz though)
I can't remember if Viz was the small stall of volume 1s or if that was Forbidden Planet. It'd be terrible losing Travelling Man or ones like YenPress as they have most of the manga there, especially for a range of titles. Square Enix has a decent manga presence too usually.

Looks like HMV are breaking out the 'standard' 4K with an exclusive cover before AL have even announced one.

Wait, so did AL lie when they said that were was no standard 4K release scheduled currently? Seems like they were being very careful with their wording on social media. Although, if that HMV listing is true, the standard edition may be releasing along with the other editions in December. Then again, perhaps an "alternative" cover art edition doesn't constitute a "standard edition" in AL's eyes.

However, if that is the case, then it reeks of "wait for sales of the deluxe edition and the steelbook to die down" and then announce the standard edition. Their social media responses could easily be interpreted by customers to mean that a standard edition was some time away, like we've seen with other 4K releases. Bit of a scummy marketing tactic if we are actually getting a SE in December, but hey, you gotta do what you gotta do.

I suppose the "future" is 3 weeks in Anime Limited time.

Going by this statement on their Twitter, I suppose we can also expect the minus colour version in a standalone release at some stage:

And yes, I keep receipts. Be careful, AL

'No current plans' is AL speak for 'let's see how the pre orders go' 😂

If not they're gonna be pretty shocked by this blatant knock off!!!! (also available on HMV)

Damn, they definitely swindled me. I pre-ordered the steelbook, but at least the standard edition is pretty much the same price - and going by the spine, it's only 1-disc, so no bonus disc, unfortunately.
Very true.

The more I think about it, there is zero chance they decided like a week ago to release the standard edition day and date with the other releases, inked an exclusivity deal with HMV AND got Toho to sign off on another piece of art...
I'm starting to think they may have, absolutely shockingly, LIED about having "no plans" 😱

Just need them to announce that Macross Plus collector's edition now (that they 100% have no plans of releasing for at least 12 months).

It does leave a bit of a nasty taste in your mouth.

They could have just kept their mouth shut and come out with the standard edition when they have and most people would understand - you want to steer people toward your more premium editions before announcing the standard 4K, cool, it's a thing that some distributors/licensors do, I'll live.

However, to come out and pretty much outright be dishonest and mislead customers by saying there were no plans for a standard edition at this time is pretty icky from AL.
