What Games Are You Playing?

I could probably count on one hand how many times its happened in the 6-7 yrs I've had my PS4. I'd like to say my console is just old but I've heard a lot of people have had the same problem with Valhalla.
From what I've heard today it's been optimised towards playing better on the new generation. So the standard PS4 has less NPCs and stuff, but is still crashing more than playing it on the PS5 which itself still crashes and has all the visual glitches and bugs. I think I might wait for the next (I suppose now current) gen patch and hope I have enough money to buy at least a PS5 (if they've sorted the supply issue by then), if not a 4K TV to go with it. I mean I've waited this long what's another 6 months or so!

I probably would've waited until I got a PS5 myself but preordered it from GamesCollection back in March for £37 so I don't feel too bad. Its certainly playable and I've hardly seen any bugs. A few yes but not to the point twitter would have you believe 😂

I finished Yakuza 0 the other week and started on Kiwami but y'know, Cyberpunk 2077 came along so now I'm hooked on that for the forseeable future 😅
I do intend to catch up with the Yakuza series though because they announced that the rest of the franchise is coming to PC next year so I'm thrilled I get to play them all soon enough!

I'm playing Cyberpunk 2077 a beefy PC is needed to play it and a ssd is recommended and wow there's lol lot of crybabies out there just because the dev haven't made the game there were expecting a lot of changes happen during development of a game.

I'm currently playing Blue Reflection. It's a magical girl RPG from Gust, and plays almost exactly like a Persona game. It's clearly been made on a limited budget, but I'm actually enjoying it more than the Persona series on account of it not having 100 hours of grinding in procedurally-generated dungeons. It's structured in an interesting way where you level up by getting to know people instead of in battle. So, while there can be as much combat as a typical JRPG, you can skip a lot of it by dodging around enemies if you want, since they act more as obstacles than a way to become stronger.

The tone has an old-school Sailor Moon vibe, with no post-Madoka murdery stuff (as least as far as I've played). It's clearly not aimed at girls though, on account of the girls'... physics.

I've heard the framerate chugs on a base PS4, so I went with the PC version.

A summary of my recent gaming activity:
  • Completed Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. The gameplay was about what I expected and was fun though the story didn’t impress me much and it became grind heavy when completing various tasks on the hub map.
  • Completed the Spider-Man Remastered DLC. Sadly the story was underwhelming and the side missions repetitive but the graphical improvements were nice.
  • Finished Spider-Man Miles Morales on Saturday, was an enjoyable side-story and hoping for good things with the next Spider-Man game from Insomniac.
  • Replayed GTA: Vice City, and ended up doing so via the emulated version on PS5.

I got Fairy Tail (PS4) recently and I'm having a lot of fun with it.

As RPGs go, it's pretty simple and easy to get into. The missions can be a little repetitive (it's mostly variations of "kill 10 of this monster"/"get me three of this item" type quests), but there are a load of nice character moments, plenty of different characters to play as, the presentation is excellent and there's a lot of stuff to do. There are a few advanced techniques, but none of them are especially complicated and I'm finding it very satisfying racking up big combos and unlocking stronger attacks.

I got it for £28 on Amazon and I'm really pleased with it for that price (it's drifted back up to £40 now) - honestly, I would have been satisfied if I'd paid full price for it.

Obviously, your enjoyment might depend how much you enjoy Fairy Tail (or how far you are into it - it covers a part of the story that comes way into the series), but if you're fan, I'd definitely recommend it!

Completed Games #23:
Yakuza Kiwami 2
Format: PlayStation 4

Since I was busy sorting out my Autumn 2020 anime simulcasts, I wanted to go through a game in time for this month (to keep the usual 1 game per month trend going) and I decided to take a step back by focusing on a shorter title for a change. That ended up being Yakuza Kiwami 2, a remake of the original PlayStation 2 game released in 2006. Yakuza 2 was known for being one of the best games in the franchise, up there with Yakuza 5 and Yakuza 0, so it was interesting to finally sit down and try it out.

Kiwami 2 was released in 2017 (and 2018 for the west) and uses the Yakuza 6 game engine for its gameplay. There were a lot of gameplay changes in this one compared to my experiences with the other Yakuza games, however, saying that I haven't started Yakuza 6 yet because I wanted to go through the missing gaps of knowledge I didn't know for Kazuma's storyline given that it is the final one with him taking the main role.

Graphics for Kiwami 2 is pretty impressive compared to the previous engine and the gameplay is still strong. The transition from walking around to random combat segments in the cities is better than before, though the game does suffer from loading issues on the base PlayStation 4. The EXP system feels much easier than before as you can grind it by simply eating tons of food which can give you stats every time, which I actually like because it helps keep you up-to-speed with the difficulty without wasting time grinding.

The substories are as random and amusing like the previous games. The game does a pretty good job guiding you on where they are on the map and I was able to get through a majority with the playtime I had. The story is a good length given it has taken me around 19 hours in total doing almost everything (there's still stuff I haven't done but getting most of the skills acquired and most of the substories is a pretty good pace).

Kiwami 2 also includes a mini campaign dedicated to Goro Majima, Kiryu-chan's buddy and it's very straightforward but nice none-the-less. Not as expansive as Kiryu's main story or Majima's gameplay in Yakuza 0, but good fanservice overall. It also provides closure to a character from another game that I won't spoil, which is heart warming in a way.

Overall Yakuza Kiwami 2 is a great game. I have heard there's a lot of cut content this time around compared to the first game's Kiwami remake, but for what we have so far it's a solid experience. The villain I knew was one of the most memorable in the franchise and he stands out really well especially with the voice-work. The story does feel like it has taken a halt at parts but it makes sense in the end-run. Yakuza Kiwami 2 is available to play on PlayStation 4 (physical/digital), Xbox One (digital) and PC.

I made the mistake of using Eurogamer as my main source of gaming news for the last several years, and the result has been me not being aware of a generation's worth of games from Gust because their editorial team don't care about JRPGs. After recently finishing Blue Reflection, I've moved on to Atelier Ryza, and it's great. This is the first atelier game I've played since Iris on the PS2, but I'm planning to start filling in that huge gap. I'm usually not a fan of crafting or basic fetchquests in RPGs, but for some reason I'm enjoying all of it in this one. There's no skill involved in the crafting system, but there's lots of choice. That's probably why I've spent 70% of my time with the game tinkering around in the synthesis menu, which I wasn't expecting to be the case.

Replaying Ar Tonelico Qoga: Knell of Ar Ciel, a pretty good JRPG/visual novel hybrid with the most nonsensical title ever.

Completed Game #1 | Yakuza 6: The Song of Life (PS4)

After playing the second Yakuza game via its Kiwami remake before 2021, I decided to begin the year by jumping straight into Yakuza 6: The Song of Life, the sixth (technically seventh if you include Yakuza 0) main instalment in the long-running SEGA franchise and also the final game for Kazuma Kiryu.

Yakuza 6 is a character focused storyline. There's very little focus on the Tojo Clan and Kiryu's old friends and instead we have what is essentially the "Yakuza 3 for the current fanbase generation". I honestly had no problem with Kiryu having more spotlight than others as this is his story than everyone else's (it's like how Toy Story 3 ended with a bang, while Toy Story 4 wraps up Woody's character arc - Yakuza 5 and Yakuza 6 basically did just that). The story takes place between both the regular Kamurocho area and also a new place called Onomichi set in Hiroshima. While the former has a ton of variety with a few cut areas, the latter is quieter and more local so there is a difference in content and exploration. As for the story itself, I liked it a lot and it's rather impressive that every single dialogue was actually voiced which is different to the other games (Kiwami 2 which came out afterwards didn't do this either). The ending itself is pretty good and is a good way to conclude his storyline.

The game has a lot of story cutscenes to go along with its core gameplay and I am perfectly fine with this considering Yakuza has always had a big emphasis with its story-telling and dialogue. The gameplay is basically the same as I had mentioned with Yakuza Kiwami 2, which I need to reiterate that it came afterwards and basically took Y6's system, though saying that Yakuza 6 felt a lot more challenging. The combat felt slower at first, likely to represent Kiryu's age as he has gotten older over the course of the franchise, but the EXP system does take a while but can be rewarding as you progress with the story and side content. I also noticed earning money has been more difficult this time but you can more-or-less progress without too much hassle - though like many other RPG type games, you shouldn't rush the story because the difficulty will creep up on you.

For earning money you can do either the sub stories which make their return once again, also voiced all the way through as well, or the Clan Creator (which did return in Kiwami 2). The Clan Creator is a lot of fun and basically a tactical-type mini-game where you have a group of people who you command to defeat various different enemies in one area or more. You can also unlock other characters with a cheat code if you need to which I do recommend if you wish to speed up the pace, but I did manage to finish the clan storyline without doing this or with too much difficulty. The other mini-games like SEGA's old classics and Karaoke do make a return alongside newcomers like the RYZER gym which is pretty neat.

As for criticisms, I have no issues with the story, the characters and the gameplay itself, and my only main issue has been towards the engine itself. It should be no surprise that a lot of people do not like the game's engine because it's not very well optimised. The 30 FPS with the base PS4 is tolerable but it can hamper the fun a times. The real issue I have is the loading because there are a lot of them and especially during cutscenes which just feels quite rough in terms of quality check. My game even crashed due to the loading not doing its job at one point which is concerning.

Overall, Yakuza 6: The Song of Life is very good and well worth playing when you have finished Yakuza 0-5. The gameplay is pretty good, the clan creator is a fun mini-game, graphics look pretty good and the story is worth a watch. It's a shame the performance isn't perfect though. I spent 29.5 hours playtime going over all of the main story, maxing out Kiryu's stats and finishing the entire clan creator storyline so it's just a bit longer than Yakuza 1-3 were.

Yakuza 6: The Song of Life is available to own on PlayStation 4 (physical/digital), and PC, plus will be coming soon to Xbox Game Pass.

I finished Cyberpunk 2077 last week. I'm waiting for the game to be a lot more stable before I create another V and play it again though. I'm very much looking forward to another play through honestly. I enjoyed it a lot despite all the bugs (and I completely fell in love with Judy)
As for now, my friend heavily suggested I play the Deus Ex series because I enjoyed Cyberpunk so much, so I nabbed Human Revolution for dirt cheap on Humble and currently playing through that. Enjoying it so far.
Will probably go back to Kiwami when I'm done with this and continue going through the Yakuza series.

Trying to wrap up some post-game achievements in DRV3, trying to get back to Nier Automata because I'm ready to Hurt over 9s ending and onwards, I've enjoyed lots of Among Us with friends and the cyberpunk bartending game is a fun wind down.

I loved DRV3 so much, I'm sad it gets a lot of hate. :(

Last year I finished Vagrant Story, Xenogears, and Front Mission 3. I have either Tactics Ogre (already completed once) or Persona 4 to play next. Also working through Resident Evil 2: Remake.
