That last sentence makes this sound like a case of damning with faint praise! I spent much of the first two episodes wanting to punch the two lead characters because they came across as insufferably arrogant and know-all. The show's dialogue seems to be aping Nisio Isin's style, only without the wit and far more obnoxiously smug.

I dunno if the characterisation is any less "soapy" than Toradora though. I mean, the male lead isolates himself because a girl rejected him. EMO!

It's not great, but I feel it's doing a better job of what Oreshura tried to do than Oreshura did. In particular, I felt the exchange between the main characters and the 'popular' crowd in ep3 was well observed and believable - not descriptors I was expecting to need on this one.

Maybe I'm going too easy on it, but to put things in perspective, the last comedy anime series I attempted saw fit to introduce its main character as an unrepentant bitch, only to have her pulling lost waifs out of a flooded storm drain by episode three. Compared to that, I Cannot Remember My Youth Due to Marker Pen Fumes is like Shakespeare.

Meh. Some days, I just want to watch a sitcom.

I never watched Oreshura so I can't comment on that, but I did see Binbougami Ga, which I believe is the series you reference in your second paragraph. Oh man, the drama in that show is beyond terrible. It is funnier than Youth Romantic Comedy Something Something, though.

Personally I prefer Haganai, which a takes a similar premise - a bunch of friendless oddballs including the most deliriously twisted female lead ever - and abandons any pretence of wanting to say something profound. But even that's supposed to go the romance/drama route later... bleh.

Yeah, I wouldn't argue that Binbougami Ga was funnier. When it was doing the jokes, it was great, but its attempts at character development were diabolical to the point where I couldn't stick it.

Haganai rings a bell, but I seem to remember something about it being heavy on fan service. Shall bear it in mind anyway.

A Certain Scientific Railgun S Episode 2
It's actually quite painful having read the manga and rewatching these earlier scenes and knowing what they're building up too.

Having only read the first 4 Vols of the manga, I have to wonder what they spent the first 24 episodes doing. Somehow they've managed to stretch the level upper arc across the first 12 episodes of S1, which ended around halfway through Vol 3 of the Manga if I remember correctly. I'm pretty sure the Sisters arc, which started in this episode, started in the same volume of the manga, so what on earth are the other 12 episodes of S1 going to cover?

Pointless filler.

Anyway, watched episode 2 and 3 of Gargantia. It's not too bad. I like the character interactions but I'm not too fond of the fights. Though the scene where he spins Lukkage's mech round in circles was quite funny.

Eden Of The East 5-8 on Bluray. Getting a little concerned with the amount of johnnie, their word, references. Crosses legs and looks uncomfortable :(
