I spent much of the first two episodes wanting to punch the two lead characters because they came across as insufferably arrogant and know-all. The show's dialogue seems to be aping Nisio Isin's style, only without the wit and far more obnoxiously smug.
I dunno if the characterisation is any less "soapy" than Toradora though. I mean, the male lead isolates himself because a girl rejected him. EMO!
It's not great, but I feel it's doing a better job of what Oreshura tried to do than Oreshura did. In particular, I felt the exchange between the main characters and the 'popular' crowd in ep3 was well observed and believable - not descriptors I was expecting to need on this one.
Maybe I'm going too easy on it, but to put things in perspective, the last comedy anime series I attempted saw fit to introduce its main character as an unrepentant bitch, only to have her pulling lost waifs out of a flooded storm drain by episode three. Compared to that, I Cannot Remember My Youth Due to Marker Pen Fumes is like Shakespeare.
Meh. Some days, I just want to watch a sitcom.
