Just ordered the 2199 series from the zaavi sale but a bit confused as to how to get into this franchise. Thought I'd watch the latter in place of the original series and then try and find the original (70s/80s) movie that followed and ended the series before the retcon. Would that plan not make sense with the 2199 remake and therefore is the more obvious 2202 the best way to follow on rather than my crazy plan? So confused...Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2202 episodes 9-26 (Complete. A solid follow up for the overall storyline which offered more of the enjoyable sci-fi action that the franchise has to offer.) 4/5
It’s best to keep the original and 2199/2202 as separate. Although it’s a remake there are significant differences between them that you can easily have them as completely different shows.Just ordered the 2199 series from the zaavi sale but a bit confused as to how to get into this franchise. Good to know, thank you. I was under the false impression that there would be minor differences with the story more or less following the original. It’s best to keep the original and 2199/2202 as separate. One of the big differences is that some characters that die in the original don’t die in the newer ones.Good to know, thank you. I was under the false impression that there would be minor differences with the story more or less following the original.

i enjoyed this when I watched it a few years ago. It’s one I’d love to see get a redub as iirc the dub wasnt great but it will never happen.... if only I could become a multi billionaireBlack Magic M-66
I last saw this on VHS in the 90s and have revisited for a podcast project.
You pretty much had the same criticism I had with regards to the film - the idea of the story being told through reality and fiction was quite messy throughout so there were many moments where I wasn't sure if it was supposed to happen main story-wise or not.Millennium Actress 4K (Japanese) Film
Similar to Perfect Blue, which I was expecting given Kon's intention for them to be sister pieces. The blur between reality and fiction didn't work as well in this movie I must admit. In Perfect Blue it was effective in causing a distortion of reality so you weren't sure if what was seen was to be believed but here in Millennium Actress it usually only causes confusion. More of a collection of vignettes that don't always get the point across. Still an enjoyable watch with a great score by Susumu Hirasawa.
