My Hero Academia - Episode 13 - A pretty solid ending to the series, not much actually happened but it built up hype for the next series and keeps me interested to see what happens. I look forward to when ever that comes out.
Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress - Episode 11 - Not bad this week, some major eye rolling moments but at this point I've come to expect that from this show lol I enjoyed it well enough to be looking forward to next week to see how it ends.
Kiznaiver - Episode 12 - A pretty weak ending all things considered, that said it's still a series I really enjoyed, I liked the characters an awful lot so I look forward to picking up the BDs from Anime Limited.
Re:Zero - Episode 13 - Good stuff, gotta feel for the guy really, even when it's all his own doing. Still dunno if I want Emilia or Felt to win either, after her speech I reckon Felt would be more entertaining lol not sure if that's a good thing right enough.
The Devil is a Part Timer!-Episodes 11-13 (Complete)
That last episode was a little anti climactic. I feel like the penultimate episode should have been the last one really.
Monogatari Manners-Episodes 1-4 (Complete)
I was talking to thedoctor earlier and he reminded me that I actually hadn't seen these yet despite them being on Manga's PMMM: Rebellion Blu Ray. They were pretty decent for what they were, I like the art and some of them were pretty funny. I kind of wish they had crossed over more characters than just Kyubey though.
The Garden of Sinners Chapter 5: Paradigm Paradox
Not hard to see why people say this is the best one, this was just brilliant. It had a really great story, some fantastic character moments with Shiki and Enjou and easily the best action out of any of them so far, and they really cranked up the brutality too. My only complaint is, in the middle, the editing became a confusing mess, and it seems very deliberate. Like, they were showing some scenes that didn't actually occur until later on in random places, and then showing them again later on? It just made a portion of the film really head scratching for no discernible reason, as the plot is actually pretty straightforward when you think about it. Anyway, that didn't get in the way of me really enjoying this on the whole. One thing I do have to say is that I think this would have made for a good conclusion to the franchise. Not only have we learned all about Shiki's past now and how she came to get her eyes and what not, this film tied together the first and third films into one whole. This might have been a good place to leave it.
Pani Poni Dash-Episodes 24 and 25
Episode 24: An episode set in Feudal Japan? I'll take it.
Episode 25: And now one set in Space. This truly is a spectacular show...
Episode 1: A fairly enjoyable first episode, mostly due to Arslan himself, who has an instant likability factor. No real hint at what the actual story will be yet, so I'll see how it goes from here.
I've watched a few things since the old forum went down (can't recall exactly which episodes I last posted about for the ongoing ones). Too much rambling so I've used the spoilerbutton option to try and make the post more readable. I'd be tempted to put something in the rating thread for at least a few of these but I may not get around to it (maybe if/when I re-watch them).
Joker Game up to and including Episode 12.
[spoilerbutton]The series ended quite well and overall it was a reasonably good show. I'd say it was fairly consistently entertaining throughout. It also had quite a good sense of style and, while it's characters were somewhat limited, they tended to be quite suitable for the generally unsubtle but still effective stories being told.
I quite enjoyed the way that the show frequently featured super spies doing over the top and amazing things but contrasted that with the more realistic difficulties of actually being a spy and the costs to their emotions and lives. Looking back, the show basically started with the exciting (if dangerous) aspects of becoming a spy and then gradually moved into some of the less bright realities. Despite the fact that each episode (aside from the two part stories) basically stands alone, it was still telling a complete story of sorts.
Episode 11 was interesting, I fully expected "Maki" to show up alive eventually.
While I did enjoy Episode 12 there was one moment that I wasn't entirely sure of. I think Yuuki explaining that emotion can be a problem in the spy industry could have been done better without having him suggest that women are incapable of controlling their emotions. It doesn't help matters that the person he's speaking to is a male whose strong emotions have been a problem. It's kind of relevant to the case, since it's implied that the woman may have acted less out of a sense of duty and more for her own reasons, but it's still too much of a generalisation. Perhaps the idea was to show that, despite being a seemingly intelligent and rational person, even Yuuki isn't immune to misguided ideas of the time. It's not exactly a major problem but it's disappointing to see Yuuki fall into that trap when it was unnecessary and it did somewhat undermine his comments.
I'd quite like to see another season of Joker Game, although the one season does work quite well on it's own.[/spoilerbutton] Tanaka-kun wa Itsumo Kedaruge / Tanaka-kun is Always Listless up to and including Episode 12.
The last few episodes of the show were great, I thoroughly enjoyed the show overall.
I thought the final episode was especially brilliant. Tanaka-kun often has a somewhat down to earth and sensible point of view while still managing to take into account his own eccentricities, it'd be easy to fall into the trap of having him be too wise but the show does a good job of giving him room to grow and learn and uses that effectively. I was quite impressed with the way the show managed to incorporate some real issues and deal with them in a straightforward and sensible way. It wasn't world changing stuff but there's a nice human touch to the show and the characters often felt like real people. I was particularly impressed with the more realistic way that the show dealt with Shiraishi's issues, many shows would have gone for something silly or over the top but this just felt like an honest evaluation of the reality of the situation.
I'd love to see another season of this, there were too many great characters and not enough time. The show could often be a laid back fun time but it also managed to be more than just that, I'd very much like to see it build on that if possible but even if it was just more of the same a second season would be appreciated. I'm not sure how likely another season is but I'll almost certainly pick up a copy of the show at some point.
Flying Witch up to and including Episode 12.
I'd probably say my favourite show of the season was either Tanaka-kun or Flying Witch, though it's hard to choose between them. They're both relatively slow paced, fun and relaxing shows but they offer somewhat different experiences and they're both great in their own way.
The last few episodes continued the show's tendency to mix magical and mundane while drawing a sense of wonder and comfort out of both. The magic might be nice to look at and there's some decent non-magical scenery to enjoy too but the reactions and interactions of the characters are what really make the show work. There's a lot of attention to detail in little things like body language and the relationships between the characters are often shown in a very natural way that avoids any need for explanation. There's also Chinatsu, who has to be one of the most realistic (and best) child characters in anime. Even the Cat familiars seem quite realistically Cat like at times.
The show does a great job of building a pleasant atmosphere and making it easy to enjoy watching whatever the characters are up to in each episode. It might not always be easy to put into words exactly what makes it work but that doesn't stop it being fun and leaving you with a good feeling.
Though it's somewhat different to Non Non Biyori, if you like that kind of show at all then I'd certainly recommend Flying Witch (also Tanaka-kun).
This is another show I'd like to see a second season of and will almost certainly be buying. It's actually been a pretty decent season for me so far.
Locodol Episode 15 (or OVA 3, possibly OVA 2 but Episode 13 was an OVA so... Well it's called Episode 15 on Crunchyroll so that'll do for now).
I'm quite fond of Locodol and this was a pretty solid extra episode and it was a pleasant surprise to see it appear on Crunchyroll.
It's a shame that the Sentai release won't include episode 14 or 15, although it might be an option to do an extra release at some point (especially if there are more OVA episodes).
It's not a top slice of life/"cute girls doing cute things" show but it has some good moments and fans of those kinds of shows would probably enjoy it.
Bungo Stray Dogs Episodes 1-12.
[spoilerbutton]I somewhat enjoyed this show, though I'm not really sure why. It has some comedy and some more dramatic content but the two don't always mix well. The action varies in quality and sometimes feels unnecessary, it only occasionally feels like the action is actually complementing the story. The show also has an odd tendency to seemingly ignore the fair bit of death and killing (often of innocents) by almost treating it as background noise rather than something relevant (with the odd exception). The writing isn't always the best either, it has some questionable moments and sometimes needlessly explains things that the audience will almost certainly have understood in the first place.
Despite all these issues, the show just seems to be good fun. The characters probably help quite a bit, they're a somewhat interesting (or potentially interesting) bunch and most of them are easily likeable. Although the comedy and drama don't always mix well, both have some fairly effective moments and the show is quite good at making you just curious enough to wonder what'll happen next. The show does generally improve as it goes along, finding a better balance for the comedy and drama, building better action scenes and improving the writing a bit too. Watching the show grow and improve is probably at least part of the appeal.
I have to admit, there were times when I thought I might not bother watching another episode but the show is fairly easy to watch so I always found myself giving it another chance. I can't say I regret it, no episode felt particularly bad although I couldn't say any were better than good either (maybe the date episode). The show is already getting a second season so there's still time for it to improve, I don't really expect great things but I'd hope it would at least remain as watchable as it has been so far.[/spoilerbutton]
Got 2 episodes of Shirobako left to watch tonight. Very enjoyable show with a strong cast of characters and purpose. I pray for another series or feature length movie.
Finished Shirobako. Fantastic series, well worth the hype. Legit started to well up at the end of episode 23, that's how attached to these characters I got, plus the final episode was about as epic as a show about making anime can likely get.
Twin Star Exorcists - Episodes 04-09
I was enjoying this as light, somewhat funny, somewhat exciting, not brilliant but not awful trope-filled shonen fluff. The kind of show that it's fun to waste time with, but isn't going to win any awards any time soon. Even though I know it isn't the greatest show ever, I genuinely can't see why it has attracted so much vitriol from people. I'm laughing at most of the jokes, even if they aren't the most original (Surprise everyone! I do have a sense of humour after all), and the action sequences are well done. I'm really enjoying it, and it's a rare show (for me) that I can and do just want to watch one episode after another, whereas I normally struggle to watch more than one.
And then episode 9 happened... Holy ****.
That was a surprising change in tone, and it's clear that the new tone works better for the series. It's weird that it was left so late into the cour. I have to wonder whether it work as well, if it had occurred earlier in the series. Another series this season (Re:Zero -Starting Life in Another World-) did a reasonably similar thing much earlier on, and I'm not sure it has quite as much impact there, because you don't know the characters and you don't care for them, so it just came across as a twist that was done purely for shock value. Whereas here it works, and goes someway to explain why certain characters behave in the way the day do. The decision to split various different parts of the twist between episodes is interesting, Splitting it into two parts allows the audience to see events both from the character's perspective and as they "actually happened". Episode 9 is clearly the best episode yet, and I can't wait for more of the same. Although it looks like there's some more comedy stuff first.
I'd suggest that, in addition to trying to make us like and want to sympathise with the perhaps annoying leads a little bit more, part of the reason they've added comedy original content in to pad out manga events is to try and reduce the inevitable creepy overtones the series has. The series revolves around an arranged/forced marriage (depending on how you interpret it), and before they started to like each other it was a great source of personal annoyance how 'emotionally tone deaf' everyone else in the show was to the face they weren't happy with the idea of getting married. I understand why the relatives of the leads are all ignoring the possibility of the wedding not taking place, but the show never addresses it, so the relatives just end up looking oblivious and/or uncaring. Following on from that, I think it might be unpalatable to see that progress with the two leads either hating each other or unconvincingly changing to liking each other. So it probably works better for the show and the audience to have the characters gradually softening up on each other and starting to like each other in ways that are maybe slightly more realistic than they might have been without the padding of the relationship.
I'm a little torn on this at the moment. On the one hand, the story is kind of generic and really simple but on the other hand its simplicity lets it focus on the thoroughly entertaining spectacle of the battles and sieges. The characters are likable enough although I wish Arslan and friends has a bit more screentime, they kind of feel like they've been swept under the rug in episodes 5 and 6.

They get more screen-time a little further into the season. I'm glad you seem to enjoy it. I was rather entertained with how the story goes, granted the second half's arc may put people off.
