Hunter x Hunter-Episodes 105-109

Episode 106: Knov having a breakdown at the sight of one of the Ant's aura really highlights just how powerful the Ants are at this point. He seems to be a very strong Hunter is is normally very cool and calm so this reaction was very unexpected.

Episode 107: Oh hey Gon, I forgot you were in this show.

Episode 109: Damn, Knov looks like he's seen better days.

Baby Steps s2 ep24. I'm going to miss this after it finishes next week.

GATE: Thus the JSDF Fought There ep11. This felt like it was the start of a new season, probably because of the five month timeskip.

The Heroic Legend of Arslan ep23. The cheap animation was really shown up in all this episodes battle scenes.

The iDOLM@STER: Cinderella Girls s2 ep9. Lots of great music in this episode. The story was very similar to the original series, but was still the most entertaining episode of CG yet.

I'm still conflicted if I should continue Gate. I'm about 5 episodes behind and I just don't really feel that compelled to continue but I don't really like dropping Anime. I think the only two I've dropped are Strike Witches and Samurai Champloo.

Bit of a catch up for me since I was away over the weekend.

Baby Steps 2 24
Arslan 22-23
Classroom Crisis 11
Charlotte 11
Ace of the Diamond 2 24
Food Wars 23
Rokka 11

And I watched the Devil Is a Part Timer 8-13 on the train back. Looking forward to the novels.

Log Horizon - Episodes 07-20

I'm really enjoying this show, to the point where I'm even willing to let it get away with the most stupid development in fantasy writing I have ever seen...

Behold the unfathomable magical power of the legally binding agreement! :D

I wasn't originally sold on Rudy, but he's won me over, and I'm glad they got on with the whole person of the landthing fairly quickly, as when it wasn't addressed immediately I thought they were going to drag it out.

I'm slightly concerned about how every single character goes "I can't do this" and 5 minutes later, they've worked out a way to said thing and get it done in a better manner than anybody else could. There was something weird about episode 19 though, apparently there are 60 adventures in Chousai helping to fight -- if that's the case, why do only 10 of them a) ever appear b) make or receive decisions and c) actually fight? Why not just say there are 10 of them, because there's no evidence the other 50 existed, never mind helped?

The backstory of some characters is more prominent in the second season, it never goes into super detail but it's interesting nonetheless. I can only recall on hint of backstory in the first but I maybe wrong..

So far, there's only been the discussion of Shiroe being a CAD student, a very very very brief shot of Tohya in a wheelchair, but it has intrigued me so hopefully we'll see a bit more of that.

Hunter x Hunter-Episodes 110-117

Episode 110: I cannot wait for the episodes after this. This is what this entire arc has been building to so these next few episodes should be amazing.

Episode 111: Okay, that was a weird time to give Netero backstory but okay. NOW the next episodes are going to be amazing.

Episode 117: Damn, Cheetu just got absolutely annihilated. That was brutal. Also, how in the hell has the last like 5 or 6 episodes taken place in 3 bloody minutes? Does this country run on Namek time?

Giant Gorg (1984) - Episodes 1 - 3 (out of 26) (First Impressions)
j8RmeKe.jpg
I just watched the first three episodes of Giant Gorg. For the uninitiated, Giant Gorg is a 26 episode anime series released back in 1984 and was directed by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko and produced by Sunrise. The director’s works include directing Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin, Kaze to Ki no Uta Sanctus and Crusher Joe: The Movie among a few others like Venus Wars. Yasuhiko is also known for his fantastic character designs, most notably for Mobile Suit Gundam, Gundam Unicorn, Zeta Gundam and Yuusha Raideen. As such it is clear what cloth Gorg is cut from.
Only having watched three episodes its early days however I'm thoroughly enjoying my time thus far with this show. I'd say that it definitely moves at a fast pace. The show itself is a mecha series however not much of anything in the way of mechanical has been spotted yet outside of the OP and ED however the mechanical designs themselves are by the legendary Mamoru Nagano of Five Star Stories fame. As mentioned earlier, I'm very...well early in the series but I already love what I both see and hear. Speaking of hearing, the music is composed by Mitsuo Hagita (Record of Lodoss War) and I like it a lot.
The series itself follows a 13 year old boy (as most mecha anime series do) called Yuu, the son of a respected scientist who died in an accident. I assume that this sounds familiar if you've watched any mecha anime. What I didn't expect is that the show starts off in New York, with Yuu looking for a man that his father instructed him to visit. He finds the man, who's living with his sister in a dingy apartment. Introductions are cut short as their house is bulldozed and they're chased by a bunch of people whom are trying to kill them. Yuu's father, and his apprentice, the man Yuu has found (named Dr. Wave) have been researching a place called the Austral Islands and apparently a big corporation doesn't like people moseying about. Dr. Wave knows a man who they simply call Captain who is tough and ruthless. Dr. Wave requests the help of Captain in order to get to the island but of course on the way they encounter people, dangerous people who don't want them getting any further. These people have eyes and ears everywhere and so the journey there is tumultuous. One of the leaders of the bad guys is pretty cute tho.
The show itself is comedic and but also doesn't shy away from having characters die, even 3 episodes in with blood and such.
Also, I thought that it might be worth mentioning that the OP for Giant Gorg is awesome while the ED is equally awesome. What's more awesome, the name of the ED is Believe in Me, Believe in You.
In any case, I look forward to watching more Gorg. With a nice soundtrack, fun characters with attractive designs and great animation (the show itself starts off live action!) I'm having a lot of fun. I'll watch more episodes, same Gorg time, same Gorg channel.

Non Non Biyori Repeat Episode 11.

I do like it when Koma-chan-Senpai wins... I'm counting that one as a win anyway. Although, maybe Hotarun was the real winner here.

One of the reasons I've always been fond of Hotarun is that, while she can seem mature at times, she's still a kid at heart. I thought it was interesting to see that examined here, though in some ways I have to wonder if the other cast members just weren't paying attention (especially this far into the show).

Another pretty great episode overall, it's a shame there's only one left. I can't help feeling that there was a shortage of Koma-chan-Senpai in this season, though I'm probably just letting my bias mislead me. Still, it's been nice to get a fair bit of bonus Hika-nee, to the extent that she's almost the star of the season (she's got to be pretty close on screen time to the main four).

I also re-watched YuruYuri Season 1, Episodes 1-12.

To be fair, I enjoyed it more than I remember doing.

It's not quite the same as other cute girls doing cute things/slice of life shows, it feels like more of a comedy that happens to have an entirely female cast (kind of necessary for the yuri jokes, I guess). There seem to be less moments of heartwarming or just "pleasantness", with most situations building up to a joke instead. For example, even the flashback to when they were little kids is really just an excuse to make a joke about how a certain character is and always has been a bit of a villain. That's not to say there aren't any nice moments at all, they just tend to be rare and minor. The date episode is probably the best for that kind of thing.

It is kind of neat that they manage to have a character that isn't particularly nice without making her totally unlikeable either. Sure, she's basically selfish and rarely does anything for anyone else (except maybe where she thinks it could benefit her) but she's not so bad most of the time and is only occasionally horrible to people. Come to think of it, there are at least two characters in the show I could be talking about with that description. I was specifically referring to Chinatsu, although I have to admit that her assault on Akari kind of pushed my tolerance.

This may just be me but I find the characters outside of the main group to be the best. I do tend to like side characters but I'd say it's usually not more than the main characters. To be fair, it's really more of an ensemble cast with the side characters getting almost as much time as the main group. Ayano and Chitose certainly get a fair bit of screen time, which is good because they're easily two of the best characters.

I'm also quite fond of the Sakurako x Himawari couple, it's not often you get a relationship with two Tsunderes but somehow it works. Unfortunately they don't appear much, though I seem to recall there being at least one good story with them in the second season. Still, I could see them being very annoying for some and, I have to admit, I could probably do with less of Sakurako randomly getting angry about breasts.

On the subject of Yuri, this isn't really a great show if you're looking for actual Yuri relationships and it's not even necessarily all that strong in terms of non-blatant Yuri relationships. It does have plenty of moments that I guess you could call "Yuri fanservice", though perhaps that description does it a disservice given how people can react to the word "fanservice". Whatever you call them, they're quite well constructed and I never found them distasteful. To be fair, I have a high tolerance for fanservice in general but I think you'd have to have a low tolerance to have a problem with anything in the show. It's also worth noting that there isn't any nudity and there's not even much in the way of underwear on show, the fanservice being more "flirty" I guess. For the most part the scenes are "fantasy" within the show too, which is often why they're played for humour.

I do quite like the show but I'd maybe rate it slightly higher as a comedy than a cute girls doing cute things/slice of life show. It's fun and easily watchable but it's not the strongest show of it's type.

Nichijou-Episode 20

I love the Professor and Nano, I wish there was a more even divide between the two halves of the show. The Yuko and Mio stuff does tend to be funnier but I still really enjoy the Professor. She is just really a lot of fun to watch and gets a lot of funny bits. Her relationship with Nano and Sakamoto is also really cute at times. This episode really highlighted this element when they were playing Hide and Seek. *sigh* Only 6 more episodes left. I feel like I'm purposefully not watching a bunch of this show at once because I don't want it to end. Nothing comes close in terms of just totally off the wall and sometimes plain bizarre comedy and tone of this show. It really is one of a kind.

Yu-Gi-Oh GX (Subbed)-Episodes 25 and 26

Log Horizon - Episode 21
Interesting that in it's 21st of 25 episodes, the series literally just killed any sense of tension or build up it had, is seemingly now trying to turn it's protagonist into a villain (because we've all clearly fallen in love with Crusty...) and is now attempting to introduce mysterious new magic with 4 episodes left, this could end up being incredibly rushed or incredibly unsatisfying. I suppose, even if it has a crappy ending, there's a second season in which it can redeem itself.

Also, almost the entire show is at the same tonal level, so I'd question the decision to go overboard on the drama in the Akatsuki/Shiroe 'dancing' scene, whilst treating the scene where the King sends the Princess to live on her own, as punishment for her actions at the conference like it was nothing. One of those is way more dramatic and interesting and has a much better dynamic to explore than the other, and it isn't the one they focussed on...
