I remember when I first watched the Chimera Ant arc I thought they laid the groundwork for some really obvious symbolism in that the NGL is supposed to be North Korea, cut off and isolated from the rest of the world, and that isolationism gives birth to the rise of a monster, or something like that.

Although truth be told I think they leave that stuff more undeveloped compared to the wider themes around survival of the fittest / power in the face of overwhelming adversity etc. / what makes someone 'human'' and can 'animals' have human traits.

Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ - Episodes 44 - 47 [Final] (Blu-ray)

ZZ comes to a decent close after a bit of an uneven run to its finale, overall a good series but it's never going to be a classic.

Space Dandy Season 2 (Episodes 18-20)

Ok, this is more like it now. Three good episodes in a row. One episode i'd rate 5/5 (being episode 18) the others being 4/5. Episode 18 is up there with episode 5 as probably my favourite of the whole run, both are somewhat similar in set up (Dandy and a young girl) executed completely differently, but allow for you to see more of Dandy beyond his typical Bravado. Looked visually stunning as well, just superb.

19 and 20 were both very solid episodes. Making up for episodes 15 and 16 being mostly forgettable now, and i have a feeling a good run of episodes could be coming up as we make out way towards the finale.

Gangsta. - Episode 08

Apparently this is the week of the extended musical interlude, and apparently the plotless episode too.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure - Episode 02-04

I can't stand Dio's annoying teenage phase, so I'm glad he's finally donned the mask.

Plus, a shonen training arc that lasts all of 5 minutes, I guess that explains why people love this show so much...

Also, I hope Warner Bros. or whoever gets the show in the UK are allowed to use British English in their subs for Phantom Blood. It looks so out of place having somebody "realize" something in the middle of Victorian London. The subs seem to have been provided by Warner Bros. Japan though, so they'll probably have to use what they're given.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex Episodes 9-16.

Mostly great stuff as usual. I really enjoyed the talky episode, I was surprised that they did it since it could easily be interpreted as a recap or similar but I thought it worked quite well and there were enough interesting aspects that it felt very worthwhile. Another interesting thing about this one is that it's a Complex episode but it didn't advance the main plot all that much, it was closer to what the Stand Alone episodes do for characters and the world really.

On the subject of which, there are quite a few really good Stand Alone episodes here. There's quite a lot of good stuff with Batou, in particular. Batou seems to be kind of the Chief O'Brien (from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) of the show, in that he's great when he's in an episode and when the episode is about him then it's probably going to be rough. They even both have an undercover episode.

If there's one thing that's bothering me slightly about the show, it's that the episodes sometimes feel too short. There are too many interesting ideas and characters and there's just not always enough time to really deal with everything. I suspect that it's deliberate at least some of the time, the show often seems to know just how much information to give so that you don't feel lost but you also still have the freedom to speculate and come to your own conclusions. Still, there are times when it would be nice if they gave you a bit more (maybe the odd two-parter wouldn't hurt). That said, there is a surprising amount of continuity. Although some episodes are called "Stand Alone" by the show itself, they often have longer term effects.

I suppose the show does kind of spell out the idea that even the Stand Alone elements contribute to something larger with it's definitions of "Stand Alone Complex".

Hunter x Hunter-Episode 95

Non Non Biyori Repeat-Episode 8

Great episode. A ton of cute Komari moments. I could also definitely relate to Komari's dilemma of throwing away her old bear, I'm actually moving house this week so I just recently came across my old plushies...

Hellsing ep 1

I tried watching this a few years ago but dropped it halfway through, can't remember why. Time to give it another go, hopefully i'll finish it this time. Decent starter episode, still something that's putting me off but not sure what

Silent Mobius - Episodes 1 & 2

These episodes set the scene and follow on from the films. Watching this has a comforting feeling, like I was watching the 'Cyberpunk Collection' tapes from Manga 20 years ago :D

Hunter x Hunter-Episode 96

Whilst I'm glad they're going back to the Troupe, I do have to ask where the hell half of them are. Machi, Kortopi, Franklin and Nobunaga are all missing. Not to mention they haven't even attempted to resolve the Hisoka and Chrollo plot line from the end of Greed Island. I hope they go back to that.

Space Cobra - Episodes 20 - 24 (out of 31) (1982)
I just got done watching five more episodes of Space Cobra, the first of which I have to admit was a bit weaker, but I mean, leading off of Rugball is no easy task, that **** was the stuff made of legends. In Episode 20, Cobra and Lady arrive on a Planet that is made up of a sea of sand. As Cobra chills at the bar a few patrons argue with an old man who's playing his instrument. Turns out that old man was a part of a tribe known as the Swordians and as Cobra and Lady return to the city after a little drive, they arrive to what looks like a ghost town where everyone who was there hours earlier are now dead. Cobra and Lady encounter a horde of Swordians but after a little fight they discover their weak point. They return to their ship only to find it wrecked with refugees aboard and head out together to get parts in order to fix the ship.

Episode 20 concludes however the next one, Episode 21 continues with the Swordians as Cobra and Lady get captured and locked up on the mother ship. A decent pair of episodes with some fun action and a great end battle with a cool gimick, almost felt like some Dark Souls ****. I had fun, but it was no Rugball.
In Episode 22, Cobra and Lady stop at Planet Rifle (sick name for a planet) in order to meet up with Jingoro, the man who built Cobra's ship, the Turtle 5 years ago. His daughter Yuko is also 20 now and with that little nugget of information, Cobra wastes no time and heads out. However, shits gone down on the planet and so Cobra heads out to rescue Yuko from the Guild. A fun episode with plenty of vehicular chases and great animation as always.
Cobra and Dominique chill on a boat with a great view in Episode 23, lucky guy! While admiring the Queen Carady, a massive boat filled with lot of money, they hear an explosion and in unison the ship goes down. Cobra and Dominique put a hold on their little break in order to see what's going on. On the way to the wreckage they encounter some hot girls who give them trouble, kidnapping Dominique and injuring Cobra. Cobra figures out what’s going down and heads off to rescue his Snow White. Another great episode that I thoroughly enjoyed. Great animation, fun set pieces and great action. A lot of cuties are killed however, man what a waste. A very James Bond-esque episode, meaning fun with loads of gadgets.
Episode 24 is the last one that I watched today and it’s a strange one. Cobra heads off to the Galactic Union Bank in order to steal some stuff from the Guild. While roaming the streets however he walks through a market, in particular a robot market where robots are being sold. Most of them are garbage but Cobra comes across one in particular that looks like a little baby, and with its child-like stare he ultimately ends up purchasing it. A hand is attached to the robot, but Cobra dismisses it as he's creeped out and shoots the handcuffs off, separating the two. The robot he bought doesn't remember much and after Cobra and Lady sleep, the robot seemingly disappears. Cobra couldn't care less and wants to head for the Bank, but on the way he finds out that all the humans are being wiped out by the robots. An episode with a lot of death, a seemingly impossible baddie, a strange story and a Gainax Ending, definitely one I won't be forgetting anytime soon. A filler episode to make way for the next one, for sure, but I enjoyed it a lot.
And with that, I have 7 episodes left, all of which I will watch tonight in order to conclude my Space Cobra viewing. Can't wait.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex Episodes 17-26.

Uhh, I guess I kind of watched a lot of this over the last two days.

I think the highlight of these episodes for me were the stories focussed on Chief Aramaki. In at least two episodes he mentions that he doesn't want to get Section 9 involved in something for personal reasons but coincidence gets them involved anyway. I couldn't help wondering if the "coincidences" were genuine, though I think they were supposed to be in the end. I suppose that ties into one of the big themes of the show too with several independent events/forces contributing to the same outcome.

The actual story episodes were fairly consistently great too.

I'll probably watch the second season soon.
