Why is Neon Genesis Evangelion so darn popular?

I genuinely cannot understand why so many people dislike Evangelion so passionately. I'm certain that it's mostly a side effect of the series gargantuan popularity, but I still don't understand why one would dislike a series based on it's fanbase or it's popularity.

Commonly true, but not in my case - I saw the series long before I ever knew it was 'popular' (2002 all I had was the sci fi channel and no Animefandom beyond it)

Besides, your argument isn't exactly solid - The Studio Ghibli films are insanely popular - and I adore them 8)

same for me, thats when i first seen it, along with nadesico and i loved it from the first moment i seen it.

as for people disliking it i think its because plot wise it can seem slow paced i mean... there is little to no explanation for the series until the last 6eps and movie and because of this it can seem very munster of the weekish. also the character developement can almost seem over developed and draining.

i think the "hate" comes in when people just didnt like the series before hear people raving about the series and just cannot get there heads round why.

it defo is a love or hate series.

personnaly i cannot stand anything by studio ghibli, its a total bore fest... imo ofcourse

Is Evangelion a dipressing anime? i ask this because i think i saw someone write down its based of someones troubled life. I could be wrong though.

Evangelion isn't depressing - at least, I don't think it is anyway. It's profound, poignant and routinely thought provoking but I wouldn't go as far as saying it's "depressing". End of Evangelion (the feature length finale to the series) is most assuredly depressing. I was feeling down for about 2 days after watching it and one of the songs in the movie - Komm, Susser Tod - is very saddening indeed. I think that really says something for how powerful the series is.

Also, Evangelion is extraordinarily popular and boasts one of the largest fanbases in the world - like Final Fantasy VII - and that's why certain people detest it. They can't handle the fact that something is more popular than their favourite anime or game, which, I think you'll agree, is quite sad ;]

Is it Elfen Lied like dipressing or is it worse?

And was it the otokus (or whatever there called) that made him dipressed? what did they do?

Sorry for all the questions. im just a lil curious

Why aren't you using proper English? :s

No, it wasn't otakus that "made him depressed", he fell into a depression (not sure why - there doesn't always have to be a "reason" for depression, I think) during the early 90s and when he was out of it, he made Evangelion.

Hideaki Anno does not like otakus and has made some pejorative remarks about them in the past. I think you're mixing both of these facts up.

Take note that both franchises were once FINISHED with but were delved back into and added **** into the mythos and ruined in all because of the persistant [retarded] fandom!

Actually, Anno apparently fell into depression during the mid point of Evangelion hence the mellow first half and the rather ****** up second half.

Seems CitizenGeek wants more EVA after the the Rebuild has finished.

::sigh::

Let's have an Eva discussion again then! ;)

I don't find Eva depressing. CG hit the nail on the head with "profound" I think. However, it's a matter of debate as to whether it was *intentionally* profound, or whether the end is a rushed mess because of budget cuts, and fans inject meaning into it that wasn't there. Eva was a well developed, good mech show until the budget cuts undoubtedly affected it, but to my mind that was what made it into something it was never intended to be: Metafiction.

And that makes it absolutely fascinating. A quick Wiki quote from a Gainax staff member as I can't be bothered to trawl the net for more insightful stuff:

"About the time that the production system was completely falling apart, there were some opinions to the effect that, "If we can't do satisfactory work, then what's the point of continuing?" However, I didn't feel that way. My opinion was, "Why don't we show them the entire process including our breakdown?"

And to me the last few episodes are Anno and the production crew totally collapsing and breaking the story and the characters down into their elemental components. One scene which I love is where Shinji is just falling through the air on a blank background and is told that this is what total freedom is. But he doesn't know what to do with it. A line is drawn beneath him and he is then told that now he has lost some of his freedom but that makes it easier for him to choose. At some point I thought "Actually, screw the story. Screw the Mecha. This is *far* more interesting." And the more I think about that the more I come to believe that might have been the whole point. Anno's frustration with Otakus and Gainax's frustration with it's workload and budget, they seem to be saying look. Look at everything that's more interesting or important than big robots fighting.

And perhaps it suceeded for a short while until it became the very thing it was an antidote to. Such is life. Eva is always going to mean different things to different people - so what's the point of arguing over it?

THE REASON

I hate myself. maybe i could love myself?

Jesus it sure as hell sounds like a cheerful anime.

Also am i the only one that hasnt seen Neon Genesis Evangelion?

Actually, Anno fell into a 4 year depression following his direction of Nadia: Secret of Blue Water. Nadia was made in 1990. Evangelion was started in 1995. You do the math.

Do you even know what you're talking about?

WHOA, sorry EVA king, I'm sorry I haven't been a fan of it since it's airdate like you, please forgive me, EVA king, I beg forgiveness your lordness, please don't crush me with the EVA bible. I forgot you were born the same way as Anno in a different way from normal humans from an egg because you're so knowledge in the ways of EVA.

Also, CitizenGeek, it's been decided after careful considering for months on end when ever we argue [possibly once every 2.14 weeks?] that we need a battle theme and I have finally found it [Don't be expecting One-Winged Angel or anything] is this:

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/KDk1MQU0n1o&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/KDk1MQU0n1o&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Discuss.

EDIT: Oh, also, I'm Sol Badguy, naturally, you're Ky Kisuke.

Not to butt in, but I mentioned the four years before in the page previously. On that note, let's all hold hands around the campfire?
We'll have to tie CG and Lupus up first.
