I've just finished reading the first volume of Akira.
Jesus Christ.
I remember reading Domu in my school library when I was about 12 years old, and being blown away by the level of detail and the story. So I definitely knew, going into Akira, that Otomo was pretty damn good. But goddamn, that level of detail in practically each frame. In a purely aesthetic sense, it's blown away pretty much every manga I've ever read.
Story wise, it's nice to see how the issue of adaptation comes up - I watched Akira when I was around 14 or so, which is now 13 years ago. So, I definitely have that sense of "Well this is different" peppered through everything. It does make me want to purchase the rest of the books to see how everything else differs.
Simply put, one of the best manga purchases I've ever made.
