What Games Are You Playing?

Debating whether to get a PS4 Pro or not. I can trade in my base PS4 to CeX and end up with £187 credit (this includes £61 credit that I already have) and buy a used Pro for £290 (well £103) though I’m not sure if it’s just worth waiting for the PS5 announcement that’s likely to happen in 2019 for a 2020 release.

Is the PS4 Pro worth the upgrade?

Have you got a 4k TV? Or even a HDR compatible 1080TV? Even if so, no UHD disc drive makes it a no buy for me as not fully future proof. Plus Red Dead looks stunning enough on the standard version.
Also like you said, presumably PS5 soon.

Yeah that’s the problem. My TV, though 4K, doesn’t have HDR because it’s one of the older models. The lack of a UHD disc drive is also a misstep so it’s really a case of whether I wait for the PS5 or buy one to bridge the gap. My PS4 still works fine since I keep it clean and use a USB fan for ventilation.

After 552 hours playing COD WW2 online, I think it's time for another game 😳

IMG_20181220_113323166-01.jpeg

Luckily Santa's bringing a switch for my daughter, and I just happen to have a copy of Zelda ready to go (once she's in bed) 👍

552 hours
Geez, I thought my 621 hours on Skyrim over the course of seven years was a lot...

I've been playing The Sims 2 because while the latter entries have prettier graphics, it's never been bettered for control freaks like me who like to micromanage everyone in the neighbourhood's lives.

Dan seemed to be easier than 3&5 but 3&5 are still for casual rhythm gamers i would say (try using those help items at first if you have hardtime or start on easy) It's games like Musynx that are completely off putting to people who aren't very good with rhythm games. I tried couple of the easiest songs today on slowest speed and i was still overwhelmed right from the beginning. I hate those kind of rhythm games that are all about just smashing buttons really quickly.

Extreme difficulty on Miku Project Diva is hard. With Persona there's a support item that allows you to press any button for the icon, made the higher difficulty levels more palatable.

I got Adventure Time: Pirates of the Enchiridion in the PSN "January" sale...and rather than just forgetting all about it (as I usually do with stuff I get from PSN sales), I've started on it already.

It's quite nice. The voice work is excellent, the graphics are nice and colourful, the sailing is nice and smooth and the turn-based battles are good.

I've had a few glitches so far (some dialogue cutting off too soon, slight framerate issues and some pretty minor graphical issues) - but it was only £12.49, so I'm definitely pleased overall!

Think I'm finally closing in on the end of Nier Automata. As much as there's been no one moment I'd really point to as the defining stand out, and there have been plenty of times I've thought things were too on the nose, or self-consciously 'deep', as a cumulative whole it's been a real journey - probably the most emotional experience I've ever had from playing a game. I'll genuinely miss it once it's done.

It's the night before christmas and I took the time to finish a few more games.

Played Game #1:
Caladrius Blaze
[PlayStation 4]
The second Asian English title for the collection and much like Shikhondo this is another shoot em up bullet hell game. The game is pretty challenging and it has some neat character designs (same person who drew the artwork for Durarara!! and Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor). I finished 2 character campaigns on Normal mode. Yes I died a lot but at least you can make use of bombs to kill the boss.

Completed Game #29:
Zero Escape: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors
[PlayStation 4]
Going into 999 I was curious to see how this game received the cult fanbase it got over the years when it was initially released on the Nintendo DS. And after going through all of the endings, the game is really good and has a ton of interesting story elements throughout. Even if you go through one route, you do get character development for that specific character and it carries over to the other routes depending on the situation. Overall I really enjoyed it, though the final act felt like a deus ex machina esque that somewhat leaves some plot holes but regardless it does end on a good note without any need of a sequel.

Completed Game #30:
Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward
[PlayStation 4]
And then we have the second Zero Escape game Virtue's Last Reward. Oh boy this game is pretty insane story-wise. With 22 endings, there is a lot of what if scenarios going on through-out and eventually it all comes together to one hell of a twist that changes everything with what you know about Zero Escape (and apparently they mess it up badly with Zero Time Dilemma). Due to time constraints I did skip through the voices during the dialog but I understood what exactly was happening. Yes you do need to read 999 beforehand to understand the motivations for certain characters.

I will say this, this game does not end on a good note. In fact I can see why many were waiting for a Zero Escape 3 to happen because of the True End route. As VLR and 999 are under the Nonary Games collection I got a Platinum trophy for them.

Completed Game #31:
Persona 4: Dancing All Night
[PlayStation 4]
After finishing the Nonary Games pack, I went back to Persona 4 Dancing All Night to acquire the rest of the trophies and effectively completing the game (again). Once again another Platinum trophy.

She dabs.

Completed Game #32:
Hatsune Miku: Project Diva X
[PlayStation 4]
The third Hatsune Miku game I have finished this year heh. Project Diva X takes the Project Diva F formula and adds a new twist to how you unlock modules. You use the character costume customisation to help gain more points and unlock more modules and fill the Crystal bar to perfect the game. For me I mainly focused on acquiring all songs and pretty much finishing the story. You have to go through all 29 songs twice and then finish the game with its 30th song (which is a medley). Overall this is a fun game but it's quite small compared to the others in terms of the setlist.

I finished Hellblade - Senua's Sacrifice on PS4 a few hours ago. We can add this one to the short list of video games that have made me cry real, watery (but , I hasten to add, very, very manly) tears.

A very surprising game for me on a few levels. I'd seen a demo at a friend's house when it was a digital only title and didn't think there was much to it. I was wrong. I was also quite surprised (in a very good way) by the ending. Which - let me get a slightly bigger font out for this...

...might just be one of the ALL TIME greatest endings in video games, ever.

Seriously. We're talking about Horizon Zero Dawn / Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater levels of impact, right in the feels.

(Do the kids still say 'in the feels' these days?)

Anyway. UNMISSABLE stuff. And I may have to review it for the 12 people who regularly watch my gaming show on YouTube.

I absolutely adored Senua's Sacrifice, I remember just sitting there staring at my screen as it ended and the music started and thinking to myself "Oh £%$& me...".

As for me, well the last game I finished was Dragon Quest XI and it was bloody wonderful and I love Jade, so there's that... :p

I absolutely adored Senua's Sacrifice, I remember just sitting there staring at my screen as it ended and the music started and thinking to myself "Oh £%$& me..."

It definitely has that effect. I'm not going to say anything spoilery about it, because I genuinely think it's one of the cleverest and most satisfying endings I've seen to a story in ANY medium in a long, long while, and I'd really like folks to experience it for themselves.

Considering I started the game thinking 'Huh. Is this all it is? Just walking about and looking at things?' it's amazing how quickly Hellblade sank its hooks into me and kept me playing through to its conclusion.

Definitely gonna have to do something about this one over on YouTube.

The last completed game of 2018!

Completed Game #33:
Marvel's Spider-Man
[PlayStation 4]
This is the second Spider-Man game I own for my gaming collection (Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro from the original PlayStation was the first) and I was blown away by how much effort was put into this. I honestly was not expecting to have this much fun playing the game in a very long time and that's says a lot by how good it is. This is a completely original take on the Spider-Man source material taking place 8 years after Peter Parker gets his powers so we are essentially going straight to the point which is for the best considering we have already witnessed his backstory numerous times through the Sony films.

The controls feel great and the combos you can make work really well, especially the dodging mechanics and how brutal it can be if you mess up and get hit. The best part is actually swinging around because it does make you feel like you're Spider-Man in a sense, though the wall climbing is a bit broken (wall running works great which is a plus). The game is an open world sandbox of sorts so you have the choice of going around finding collectibles, spotting danger alerts which are optional and of course proceeding with the story. The story is one of the best parts of the game because it's really investing especially during the third act.

My only issue with the game is the stealth parts during the story. Without going into spoilers, the stealth is very hit or miss. Sometimes they are great but at times the pacing is put to a halt and can ruin the experience especially when you make mistakes, but thankfully there's quite a lot of auto-save checkpoints throughout so it won't be a complete nightmare to deal with. The game did crash on me one or two times but like I mentioned the auto-save did fix that problem. You can manually save progress if you want to of course.

Overall I placed probably around a good 25 hours into 100% the base game and acquiring the Platinum trophy. There are no difficulty trophies except for the Ultimate difficulty which is a DLC/Patch trophy update but you do have New Game+ so hopefully that won't be a complete pain to deal with. The only gripe when trying to get through the base game for the trophies are the danger alerts in each district where you need to fight the enemies. Fighting them isn't an issue, but trying to make one spawn is and it's pretty time consuming. So if you're someone who wants to complete the game, I highly recommend that you sort out the danger crime stuff as soon as you spot one to save yourself the hassle during post-game.

And there we go, this was the last completed game for 2018. As you can expect I have a lot of games to go through for 2019 so there's something to do lol.

I've moved onto mostly buying my games digitally now, but I still have a load of physical games hanging around, unfinished. In 2019, I want to focus on getting most/all of them finished off, so I can get rid of them.

I'm currently on Muv-Luv (Vita) and Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception (PS4). I'm still relatively early into both of them, but I'm enjoying them both...they were both very slow starters, but I've got more into them as I'm going along.

I'm also playing My Hero One's Justice (PS4). It's a bit of a frustrating game and as anime fighters go, it's definitely not one of my favs, but I'm sticking with it.
