What Games Are You Playing?

Trying to get the Platinum on Danganronpa V3 and it has the pleasure of being grindy as hell and with some hard parts.

Certainly a beast compared to the previous Danganronpa's...
Good luck with the grinding :) I'm aiming for the platinum trophy too

Been playing Pokemon Ultra Sun non stop, currently on the third island. I'm glad Pokemon bank updated as I transferred a Charmander and Lapras over due to my team beung weak to ice lol

Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth

Started playing this back in June but got distracted and never returned to it until tonight, still figuring out the best approach to the game but I think I'm getting the hang of it, ready to start Chapter 3 now.

Also been playing Pokémon Gold, reminded how unbalanced the game can be at times level wise!

A mini-update! It's been just over a month since I last finished a game from my collection. Since the last post I managed to finish Killzone 3 and it was an okay shooter overall. MotorStorm Apocalypse was good fun for a racer through not being able to drift plus the AI being tedious at times makes it a bit more challenging.

Here are the new titles I've completed recently:

God of War HD Collection [PlayStation 3]
In November I managed to acquire the God of War HD Collection from GAME for as cheap as £4.99. Over the past weekend I played both games.

God of War HD
My first entry to the franchise. God of War was an interesting game overall in terms of concept and gameplay. It's an action hack 'n' slash game about a Spartan who wants revenge over a God because of what happened to his past. The game starts off in one area but eventually goes to one massive location with various parts to explore. There's a lot of puzzles and area to tackle enemies. In terms of difficulty it's quite balanced on Normal difficulty as the enemies can be tough if you don't prepare yourself. Overall it's a fun game and worth going into if you want to know what Kratos was like prior to God of War 2018.

God of War 2 HD
After finishing the first game I immediately went to the sequel. God of War 2 expands on both the story and the gameplay, improving the game on various aspects while keeping the gameplay strong. Kratos is now on another revenge journey and this one takes an interesting turn of events in the end which will make you play God of War 3. The changes in the gameplay include different abilities, changing weapons, areas that require climbing are much faster to progress and some interesting puzzles to tackle. The difficulty is also pretty balanced and there were a lot of times where I died because I made a silly mistake by jumping into a corner that ended up having lava on the ground lol.

I managed to acquire a fair amount of trophies for both instalments, including maximum HP & Magic bars as well as some other misc. types. There's no concern for difficulty levels as far as I'm aware so you could say both games are Platinum trophy friendly.

My backlog is now even more ridiculous than last time. More titles are added to the long list, so here's the list:
  • Akiba's Trip: Undead & Undressed

Replaying Grand Theft Auto: Vice City for the umpteenth time. This is my second favourite video game, and I appreciate the graphical improvement of the PS4 version. However, there seem to be a few bugs here that weren't present in the original PS2 version (and a few missing songs)

There's no concern for difficulty levels as far as I'm aware so you could say both games are Platinum trophy friendly.
Both have a "Beat the Game on any Difficulty" trophy, GoW III does have a difficulty trophy hence my lack of Platinum. GoW I does have a speed run trophy so probably needs 2 play throughs. Looking back it took me only 4 days to Platinum GoW II!

I lean strongly towards indifference with this one. Basically everything about this feels mediocre but at least there's really not any glaring issues expect that your character sucks ass at the beginning and i had to change to the easy difficulty because it felt frustrating to get over the intial challenge.

There's really nothing to praise. Levels aren't interesting and the bigger town parts are kinda lazily designed. Horror wise the game feels really tired and the only thing that cause some tension is the singing ghost. The story also basically feels pointless because there's no hook.

But i guess it's still alright because at least i don't feel bored by it even despite it's flaws.

since I got my 1080TI I got destiny 2 free with it so I rejoined the clan I had on the first game (that was on the ps4) and last night they helped me finish the campaign. finally, a sparrow, no more walking around like a dang armed to the teeth high tech cave man. still plenty of things to do though, never got the ghallahorn in the first I wonder if I could get it soon

Another mini-update! Here are the new titles I've completed recently:

Ico & Shadow of the Colossus HD Collection [PlayStation 3]
Back in October I managed to acquire a rare UK copy of the Ico & SOTC HD Collection from GAME for £17.99. Over the past couple of days I played both games.

Ico HD
First game to start of is Ico. Ico is a combination of Puzzle, Action, and Escort. The concept is essentially you escorting a princess all-around the castle to open the front gate and escape while also confronting puzzles as well as shadows that appear to kidnap her (or else you turn to stone because she was taken away completely). This is an interesting game because you literally have to figure out what to do and where to go in terms of progression. The puzzles are pretty cool and the combat is not that bad especially when you find better weapons later on. It's a short game, with around 4-5 hours progression if you carefully go through the area.

Shadow of the Colossus HD
The second game is the one that got a lot of people talking in terms of Sony exclusives. I never managed to play this one back in the PS2 era so this was the first time I tried it out. Like Ico, SOTC shares a simple concept - you go to each area to find and slay Colossi in order to save your friend. In terms of the gameplay it's very basic and empty but there's a lot of areas to explore and the boss fights are very well-done. The main issue that prevents this game from being a 10/10 are the controls and the horse AI. Controls are hit or miss and it can be a struggle with later boss fights due to how you grapple and move around each Colossi and objects. The horse AI on the other hand is mostly solid but the controls for the horse are tedious as a tank. Overall it's a solid game with around 5-6 hours progression if you want to try and find every shrine and end up dragging yourself by the last two bosses due to the controls.

Another mini-update! Here are the new titles I've completed recently:

Sonic Generations [PlayStation 3]
Back in August I decided to acquire Sonic Generations after hearing how it was one of the better instalments in the series. Bought it new this time around and only tried out this week lol. It's a solid title and well designed in terms of the menu selection during each stages and also how it blends both classic and modern Sonic gameplay styles. My main issue is with the stages 7 & 9, primarily because they drag a bit too long and the design of the levels are tedious. Stage 8 was more reasonable and quite fun. The boss fights took some use to especially with the final two. Overall I would recommend this game, now I did hear about slowdowns with the PS3 version but it's not as bad as what folks were saying to be honest.

Uncharted: Golden Abyss [PlayStation Vita]
Another title I bought back in August. Golden Abyss is not developed by Naughty Dog but instead Bend Studio (Bubsy 3D, Syphon Filter, and the upcoming Days Gone) and they did a really good job with this prequel game. Golden Abyss makes use of the Vita mechanics quite a fair bit, utilising the motion controls for better aim during shooting segments and the touch-pad for quick-time events, slicing objects and puzzles. The touch-pad segments for puzzles are really fun and one of the best parts of the game. The story is pretty good with an interesting conclusion, Sully is great as per usual. Overall this is a great instalment for the franchise and worth checking out especially if you have a Vita (note: it won't be compatible with PSTV due to motion & touch-pad controls).

I already own the Xbox 360 version but the PS3 version is the way to go for The 2nd Runner thanks to HexaDrive stepping in to improve the game. After acquiring it in early May and finished the first ZOTE back in July, I now finally started The 2nd Runner once again. I never finished the game during the 360 run for some reason.

Overall The 2nd Runner is a massive improvement over the original in terms of story, characters, gameplay and even the music. This is not a Hideo Kojima game (he produced it, but not everything else) but Shuyo Murata's for those wondering. The story is pretty interesting and doesn't need much knowledge from the original game aside from a few bits and pieces. Gameplay has improved and works really well this time around plus the graphics are great - sometimes it makes you think it's from the same universe as Metal Gear Solid thanks to the designs of the mechs.

It's a 5 hour venture but it's still worth checking out. Though I recommend you wait for the The 2nd Runner Mars remaster (due Spring 2018 for PS4 & Windows) which basically fixes the issues High Voltage Software had with the HD Collection and improves it even further thanks to cygames. Mars will offer 4K resolution, better audio sound, and you'll be able to playthrough the entire game in VR (PlayStation VR & Steam VR only).

For the 50th completed game of 2017 I'll be tackling Yakuza 5.

Another mini-update! Here are the new titles I've completed recently:

Yakuza 5 (Like a Dragon 5: Dreams Fulfilled) [PlayStation 3]
One of the oldest PlayStation 3 games left in my backlog was Yakuza 5. Yakuza 5 had a troubled life for the west, with the previous games selling poorly (the Dead Souls spin-off mostly to blame) and that the fifth instalment was the biggest Yakuza game at the time. Thanks to Sony, the franchise got a second chance and now it's here as a digital download. I didn't buy the game at launch but I picked it up a couple months later. It wasn't until now that I actually finally got into it properly.

Yakuza 5 expands on the concept that Yakuza 4 had by covering five different character perspectives. There are five acts overall, with two of the characters in one act while the other three in their own. The gameplay for each act is pretty interesting, from taking on tasks as a taxi driver to hunting animals in the mountain to dance battles to simply playing baseball. Not to mention there's also the additional optional mini-games like bowling, pool, air hockey, karaoke, and even in-game titles like Virtua Fighter 2 and Taiko Drum Master that are all available to play. The story of Yakuza 5 is very well-detailed with knowledge of the previous games required to understand the development of certain characters and where they are at in the beginning of their arcs.

Yakuza 5 is also the first title in the series to be very long in terms of its story-line which is intentional as the developers considered this game as a reboot with its updated game engine and large cast of characters in multiple locations. The gameplay itself is an action adventure beat em up with a lot of times where you will encounter randomers who will intervene because they don't like you, granted you do beat them up in the most satisfying way possible.

Campaign-wise the story itself will take you around 25-30 hours if you don't speed up on the cutscenes and dialogue which are all well-acted and so investing which makes you think you are watching a proper Japanese live-action drama series about Yakuza. But, I spent way more than 30 hours, in fact around 68 hours total playtime was spent because I decided to also progress through the other aspects; the substories which are a set of mini-tasks that each character encounters, the side-stories that expand on the characters/area that the main protagonists are in (such as Saejima dealing with the bear that's threatening the villagers up in the mountain), and also the training segments to help each character get better during combat.

Overall, Yakuza 5 is one of the best games on the PlayStation 3. The story is investing, the characters are all great, and the gameplay has a lot to offer. While the combat can be repetitive at times, the other parts of the game do make up for it to add more variety. In fact the dance battles was a nice change of pace and fits very well into the story. While I highly recommend Yakuza 5, you do need to play at least Yakuza 4 to understand what is going on (as that title includes a recap of the events for Yakuza 1-3 and introduces characters whom appear in this instalment).

With Yakuza 5 finally completed, I can now tackle Yakuza 6: The Song of Life when it gets released in 2018. However I will be checking out the spin-off game Dead Souls, the prequel title Yakuza 0, and the remake of the first game Yakuza Kiwami beforehand.

HdE

Comic Book Guy
Waaaayyy back in the mists of time (or more accurately, a few months back) I downloaded the PS4 version of the 2014 Strider remake.

I played through it over the last few days, and loved EVERY minute of it. Excellent presentation, exciting gameplay, a cohesive story (something Strider games have lacked, for the most part) and - this is the important bit: INSANELY fun boss fights!

It actually makes me wish Strider was a bigger thing. So much cool stuff in this series.

It's now time for the 2018 gaming updates. My goal for the video gaming playthroughs is to once again attempt to finish 50 different games before the year ends and making sure I get through my backlog as much as I can.

Here are the new titles I've completed & started recently:

Completed Game #01:
Yakuza: Dead Souls (Like a Dragon of the Dead)
[PlayStation 3]
Another one of the oldest PlayStation 3 games left in my backlog, probably the oldest tied with Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker back in December 2015. This was quite honestly a random pickup to start because I was in a mood to continue more Yakuza but didn't want to start a big title just yet. Dead Souls is a non canon spin-off in the franchise taking inspiration to horror and zombies combined with the Yakuza universe.

The game is honestly not as bad as what everyone is saying but it's not great either. The gameplay is relatively simple, it's a third person shooter but it's not the best type compared to other titles out there. The engine is also using the same one used for Yakuza Kenzan, Yakuza 3 & Yakuza 4 so the graphics are dated and as such the frame rate can drop quite a lot. The story is honestly pretty solid and a great fanservice for the fans of the franchise, especially if you played the first two games thanks to certain characters making an appearance.

Overall it's a short 11 hour game and has its flaws. A Kiwami treatment and a better gameplay system like Resident Evil 4 were to be implemented into this game then it would turn out much better in my opinion. I requested this for Christmas back in 2015 since it was a fiver so I got my money's worth.

Started Game:
Saints Row 2
[PlayStation 3]
Next up it's back to the Saints Row franchise with an older instalment. I've finished Saints Row 3 & 4, and I've heard a lot about how Saints Row 2 is the best instalment in the franchise, so I picked it up back in the summer and now I'm checking it out. Spent a couple hours on it and I'm getting used to the controls and the gameplay since it's a bit dated but overall I'm enjoying it. I did encounter a glitch where you get a black screen during loading times after finishing a mission so I'll have to be careful and try to avoid them as much as possible. Saints Row is no stranger to bugs & glitches lol.
