Maybe they're going for the minimalist approach?
Of course Manga would never be able to pull that off due to the massive logos and banners they love to shove on.
 
I still have not seen a SAO boxart design that I actually liked. And the white background just makes it look like the designer was lazy. I know that's probably not the case but it's just the impression I get.
 
The problem is that the characters are not good enough for a good cover :D

Seriously, this show is overrated anyway, the first part was the best and then totally downhill in my opinion.

Anyway the cover is not that bad guys ;)

Well I'm not familiar with who the characters are but the more I look at the cover the more boring it looks.

While I'm sure it's supposed to be a dramatic movement pose, having the girls head at 90 degrees relative to her legs looks kinda disturbing.

If I recall correctly the 2nd arc in the books is also regarded as bad, so I guess there wasn't much to work with to make the 2nd arc actually good.
 
That guy is the main character but he's just a pussie the way it looks lol But hey that cover resembles totally the last arc of the anime which basically is pure crap. So all even here :D
 
I preferred the original one, which used that artwork but didn't replace the majority of the background with plain white.
 
Urgh, Aniplex! Why give approval for a design, then change your mind once it's been released?! The previous designs were much, much better and now volume 1 is going to look so weird compared to the others.

I've asked MangaUK if that means volume 1 reprints will have a revised cover and if so, I'll wait for that to come out before I pick up SAO then.

It has fairy Yui on it! You can make up for a multitude of sins by giving me some Yui.
