When they're releasing a seperate DVD version like that I really don't see the point of double plays at all. Surely the impetus behind them was to push BD adoption, except the companies releasing them seem to have forgotten that such a tactic is highly unlikely to work if people aren't actually being forced to buy the BD in order to get the DVD.
I know I'm risking a torrent of "But muh extra DVD copy in case I want to watch it in lower quality in another room of my house on one of my many televisions" but if you want a DVD so badly as well, why shouldn't you have to buy it separately? People who buy the DVD don't get a free VHS copy.
Guess they are scared they'll lose sales if they force people to pay for the BD, though having said that it seemed a few DvD and BD releases were equally priced in HMV last time I looked. If they could keep them equally priced they may find people opt for the combo as they can watch DvD now and will have the BD available later when they finally upgrade.
The extra DvD argument is kinda niche tbh, yes I've heard people say it's lucky they had the DvD available as backup as their club didn't have BD etc but by and large you buy for the BD and will watch the BD.
