UK Legal Anime Streaming Service launching April

I do agree with that, somewhat. Competition is always nice, but I do wish that some sort of ANN/FUNi/VIZ agreement could be made with CR so they literally have everything.

The same thing goes for me with respect to Internet streaming. I've paid for my broadband connection. That's all you're going to get from me. I'll watch my Internet streams free and legal as long as you supply them, and I'll take your advertising too. If I'm expected to pay extra for the privilege of watching them, then I'll go the extra mile and buy hardcopy, DVD or Blu-ray. Of course with me being a canny consumer, I'm not going to buy sight unseen. I'll want to know what I'm buying, which again is where the free and legal streaming comes in.

Of course this might be different if I a) had the time to watch more than one series online a season, and b) had a sufficiently broad enough connection to allow for HD streams. I don't, it's just SD only.

Of course I can see that this service is not actually aimed at me. This is really aimed at those anime fans who aren't stuck in the 20th Century, who don''t have to obsessively buy everything on disc, but who want to watch their shows anyway. That's a section of the anime audience that hasn't been properly catered for, and monetising that sector is a good thing.

That doesn't take away from the argument that we hardcopy Luddites still need to know what our next DVD fix is going to be, or slowly we'll wind up with cash to spend, but with no idea what to spend it on.
You're in the annoying can watch fansubs but not legal streams group, along with people with download caps.

What if there is no dvd, BD etc. (outside Japan) or it's HD and dvd only? That's a realy common scenario. We're getting big series mostly stream only (Saki, I'm sure there'll be more), or at least released very slowly in the US (Strike Witches, Hayate, Gintama)

There's some realy big franchises that just don't get released internationaly. e.g. Da Capo and ToHeart 2 still don't have English legal release.

Strike witches has been out for a year though ;)

Which is 3 years old! That's still a big delay. It ended broadcast 2008-09-18 FUNi released on 2010-03-30. 18 month wait, which is long these days!

Highschool of the Dead comes out in June. Why is season 2 not even dated yet, they're from the same season.

Okay it wasn't too bad

But bigger shows do get bigger delays (otherwise Bakemonogatari would be out 6 months ago, and K-on! a year), so if more series that stream do well in Japan (stares at Nichijou) the worse the release delay will be between legal versions.
Which isn't good if people who didn't watch fansubs do watch legal streams, as even more people will totaly lose interst in the show during the delay than did previously.

a year and a half, and thay was as a complete boxset rather than indivdual episode

takes most groups 2 years just to finish of singles, never mind a boxset.

My theory is..

FUNi has higher priorities for Bouncing Tits than Tight Panties.

Didn't they only just release season 1 of Sekirei, ended september 2008, in November, over 2 years delay.

Hetalia had a 7-8 month delay
FMA:B should be about a year.

Seem to be cattering to female fans over male actualy...
Scared Blacksmith was 13 months, that's still slower.

Effectively for the UK-side that's what we've done with UK-licensors, so long-term you'll start to see a far more balanced picture here than in the US :).

Scenario where CR loses to AoD won't happen. It's 1/4 the shows for the same price atm.
This instils me with little confidence. For me to take their offer, based upon their current product and the differential between it and its competitor, would be as much a charitable gesture as it would an act of consumption.

I watch fansubs and pay CR, have done for almost 2 years now. Fansubbers want to support shows, but often can't, importing form Japan is stupidly expensive and often gets you a product you don't actualy want/can't realy use (no subs).

Scenario where CR loses to AoD won't happen. It's 1/4 the shows for the same price atm. It needs exclusives, big exclusives at that. Only way to do that is do what AN or FUNi does and get dvd and simulcast rights together, which just ups the risk of getting lumbered with crap dvd rights like Vampire Bund.

Actually, FYI 4 of the series in our line-up are UK-exclusives. Expect this to be a trend that continues :).

Irrespective of this - don't get me wrong - there is no ideal lose/win or win/lose scenario :). Each are a different shop window and ultimately that's cool by me - we're actually looking at ways we can co-operate and co-exist happily.

So watch this space, there's a lot more going here than appears on the surface just now and as the next few seasons go on that will become clearer. This season was thrown off though due to the quake and such though - which was outside of everyone's hands really.

Does that make sense?

Andrew
