The General Conversation Area

The competitive elements of a non-conversation-based service like MAL or Anime Planet are very attractive to newer fans in general, since they can 'track' their progress as a fan by the amount of content they consume. I don't think we can compete with that - and I don't personally want to, as I can't really be bothered to spend days filling in a profile and turning the hobby into a massive chore in order to make my opinion seem more valuable than that of a newcomer. But it does mean that ever since these sites sprung up, a certain type of younger fan has gravitated away from 'old fashioned' forum discussions.

I like and use MAL but it's definitely no replacement for a forum. I use it because it makes it easy to store up shows that I want to watch and I also really like metrics. I just like seeing how many shows I've seen, how many hours I've spent watching Anime and it's also handy for sharing with people so they can get a feel for your tastes. However, it's pretty much impossible to get your opinion heard. When you submit a review barely anyone will see it and you won't get any feedback. Same goes for reddit. I use the Anime subreddit for news and stuff but when it comes to actually discussing, opinions just get voted down if they go against the grain or will just go unnoticed because of the hundreds of responses. A small community like this one will always be the best way to discuss things as people seem more open to fair discussion and you know your response won't be buried.

I just use MAL as a way of keeping track of where I'm up to with a show. I never go in the forums. I much prefer smaller places like here where people actually seem to want intelligent discussions.

I haven't actually recorded anything i've watched on MAL for about half a year now, so i'm falling behind on keeping it up to date, but i do still use it occasionally. However i agree rui, we don't want to start making changes to match how those kinds of sites work. I'd love to see if we could entice some back, but i know it's never that simple.

I do wonder though if the likes of our twitter could still attract more users, or at least more posts to the reviews on the site, as i think they do deserve more discussion and more engagement. I think our twitter only gets updated at the end of the night, as opposed to all day, so we could try and get that to be more frequent(plus i want an excuse to check out AUKNS analytics pages on twitter~)

I gave up on MAL when a load of the display names for shows changed. Too much on my list for anything to make sense after that.

Now my list is physical by way of piles of watched and unwatched. Much simpler.

It probably goes without saying but I'm twelve years old.

I had no idea to be honest. You were 7 when you first joined?

edit: wait a minute, am I being had on here? What was your old username?
Y-san would never lie to you. Who do you take Y-san to be? Some kind of pervert?

Didn't you know, Vash?
Puck does not lie.

This took me by surprise. Amazon JP refunded me £35 from my Kara no Kyoukai BD-Box order I made back in April (set me back about £208 inc. P&P & 20% VAT). According to 'Google Translate':
The reason: a reduction of export costs
Refund details are as follows.
Import tax prepayments: GBP34.75
Has anyone who ordered through Amazon JP ever had this happen to them? I knew I could get refunded over pre-order guarantees (though not much) but this is the first time I've seen this happen.

I get refunded when they overestimate the tax deposit quite frequently, though it's usually only a couple of yen which isn't all that exciting. £35 is pretty darn good!

(It also happens with Amazon USA; 1 cent here, 20 cents there...)

If you are not careful you might have more cents than sense.

I'm dying, this is too good.

Don't die...

...it's too much paperwork

Hedge finally cut, with the grass being cut as an added bonus.

All that is left is to put 3 quite heavy wheelie bins into the back of the van along with some other sacks and take it to the dump to get rid of the cuttings :)

Funnily enough ours seems to be one of the few areas in London that doesn't have wheelie bins - we still have the steel circular ones with old-style lift off lids.

We used to have a real problem with the binmen where they wouldn't take the rubbish because the bins weren't right by the entrance to the front garden.

Well I just found out the rest of my marks for my 2nd Uni Year, I've done really terribly but managed to pass all modules and have an overall result of 2.2 (51%). :(

Just had my last exam at college today. Didn't go too badly I don't think. Now I just have to wait for the results in August. Also, of course the one day I have to be out early, the postman comes before 12 and I missed my parcel. Typical.

Meanwhile my employers are promoting the idea of healthy living to the employees. To that end they have set up a stand in the office doling out free smoothies. The catch? We must blend them ourselves? The catch? The blender is connected to a stationary bicycle and is powered by pedaling said bicycle. All I can say is that of all the flavours on offer I liked the mango & peach the best.

Want to buy something from Amazon
It costs £16, £1 over the import tax threshold
Postage is £7
Amazon import tax deposit I can't opt out of is £5
Same item on eBay is £40, but I still feel annoyed about paying almost a fiver for literally nothing

This is a joke. Tear down all the goddamn borders and institute the NWO already.

I just realised, it's just gone past the 15th, which means i've been here at AUKN for over 10 years. Well that makes me feel like a bit of a veteran XD
