The Gaming News Thread (for news that doesn't need a thread)

I can see plenty of reasons why they chose to play it safe. Portable gaming is coming back into popularity, it would best to keep that form factor. The Wii U was a major change from the Wii and that was a major flop while the Switch was a success, so they'll want to follow up with a Switch 2. While a whole new original thing that stands out a lot may be more interesting, what people typically ask for is just a more powerful Switch.

Also when Nintendo goes out of their way to make something unique those unique features are rarely ever supported as the vast majority of games are multiplatform and the other platforms do not support those features. So you end up with unique components on a console that are only ever used for Nintendo first party games and the very rare exclusive from a third party major publisher.

I'd like to play main series Pokemon games at more than 15 frames a second, so hopefully the improved hardware can help with that.

As for the design, I like it, even if it is a bit uninspired. The Switch was a return to form for Nintendo after the flop of the Wii U (as has been mentioned), so sticking with that core concept, design, and name makes sense. We've got months of speculation ahead unfortunately. Nothing confirmed in terms of the 'insides and specs', which will be the interesting part.

Although, I do think there is something to be said for the uniqueness and ingenuity of Nintendo's past handhelds; it is something I wouldn't want them to lose as a company.

Due to the backward compatibility, you can't reinvent it that much regardless. Personally, I'd far rather a familiar design like this than see them reinvent it into something silly that ruins all the goodwill they've built up with Switch.

Honestly for me I'm just not looking forward to the fact they've made it bigger. I like the Switch Lite a lot more than the original design (mostly due to the reduction in weight!), so this one is probably not going to thrill me from that perspective. Although I am happy it's nowhere near as thick as a SteamDeck. Hopefully they'll be a Lite down the road I can side grade to.

There's an interesting discussion happening regarding the Switch 2. It looks like you could use the new Joycons as a mouse on a flat surface. There's a few clues for this, such as when they show the controllers moving around on a surface and you can see a mouse sensor on the flat edge of the joycons.

I can see plenty of uses for this if it is implemented, such as internet browsing, strategy and fps games. Any games with map editors would also benefit.
