Overseas The Discotek Media Thread (plus AnimEigo)

Has anyone ordered directly from MediaOCD without going through stackry?

I am just wondering if you get hit with customs?

I have a couple of times. I didn't get hit with customs charges - you'll notice you pay the sales tax/VAT at checkout. I think you may have to pay something though if the value is over £135.

As a side note, very pleased with the service; I only ordered 1 or 2 sets a time and they used a cardboard box with bubblewrap.

New AnimEigo license announcements from Otakon. Don't forget that Discotek Media will also run their own panel (including a streaming version) at 1am tonight.

For their Whole Grain label they have Chris Coats' 2025 film Flamingo Camp, a documentary about a nomadic community of transgender people in the California desert and what happens when someone is murdered.

Speaking of Whole Grain, you can also pre-order Song Hae-sung's 2001 film Failan (파이란). This Korean film stars Choi Min-sik (Oldboy), Cecilia Cheung (Shaolin Soccer), Son Byung-ho (The Good, The Bad, The Weird) and Gong Hyung-jin (Peppermint Candy). Bonus features include Behind the Scenes clips, Vintage interviews with cast and crew, Feature length commentary with cast and crew and Two music videos. Available 10th November.

They then recapped what was previously shown at Anime Expo:
  • Sakon the Ventriloquist - 26 episode TV series by TMS Entertainment coming to SD-BD in November for $39.95. Based on the manga illustrated by Takeshi Obata (Death Note).
  • Drucker in the Dugout - 10 episode TV series by Production I.G coming to Blu-ray in December. A sports series also known as Moshidora.
  • A.D. Police - 3 episode OVA series by Artmic & AIC coming to 4K Ultra HD & Blu-ray in January. Also known as AD Police Files, it's a brand new 4K remaster from the original camera negatives and includes the UK & US English dubs.
  • House of Five Leaves - 12 episodes TV series by Manglobe coming to Blu-ray for the first time in the west in early 2027. Originally licensed by NIS America. Series is directed by Tomomi Mochizuki (Kimagure Orange Road).
  • Baby and Me - 25 episode TV series by Studio Pierrot coming to SD-BD in 2027. 1996 shoujo series directed by Takahiro Omori (Baccano!) with Kenji Kawai also composing the music.

Antique Bakery
2008 12 episode television anime series directed by Yoshiaki Okumura from studios Nippon Animation and Shirogumi. Another license rescue, this time from Nozomi Entertainment & Rightstuf which was eaten up by Crunchyroll & Sony so all of those Nozomi titles basically went OOP right away. No mention of format but I suspect its a HD Blu-ray release. No release date yet.

Welcome to Irabu's Office
2009 11 episode television anime series directed by Kenji Nakamura from studio Toei Animation. Based on the Psychiatrist Irabu novel series. I recall this was once streaming on Crunchyroll but AnimEigo have now picked up the license for a first-time English Blu-ray release that will also include a brand new English dub. Arriving 2027.

Ruin Explorers looks like something I will like. I have the Funimation ReLIFE but might get this version too if there's any indication it's improved (redone subtitles, better encoding, etc.)

Another totally unpredictable slate from Animeigo. They're turning into the weirdest company still releasing anime, which is a direction I can get behind. I've been annoyed at myself for not buying Relife when it was still available, so I'll definitely be getting that. I might get Irabu's Office; hard to tell how I'll react to that one.

That is indeed quite the rando-good blend, from AnimEigo. Stuff I'll actually buy if still alive that isn't Monster: take note, discotek!

The Dog Flounders movie I watched over a decade ago. Let's see what olde me said, in case it too depressing post-Toby: "8/10. If only ALL women became nuns, in memory of pre-teen love... A DEPRESSING story, told with a relatable maturity which makes you want Nello to triumph against the odds. The landlord's senseless hatred made him a 1D 'bad end' villain. True bro-dogship."... ok then, glad searched for that.
Fun bit of trivia since their Whole Grain-thing releasing Failan, which I would've watched during my Korean golden era period: the composer of Flanders, Taro Iwashiro, did the beautiful/memorable Korean film 'Memories of Murder' soundtrack.

Ruin Explorers seems like the sorta fun/silly non-isekai medieval OVA I willingly overlooked... before every sodding thing of its ilk isekai shite. I'll be getting, and I know 'F' will be joining meeee; Giant Robo 'n all. Can kinda see the Vandread in that artwork. Director apparantly a Bones guy.

Relife saw S1 fansubbed and never continued. Think it had a S2 not licensed?... Irabu an obscure buried treasure type I meant to watch in my MAL-listing heyday. Never did. Will buy. Maybe.

The Final Arc OVA's were released separately by Funimation 2 years after the series, and that gave it a very good ending. They are included in the AnimEigo set, so it should be worth the purchase.

Discotek Day live-stream announcements. Updating as we speak. "Lots of rescues"

Interested in the Koike Lupin stuff and glad it's being dubbed, might be interested in other Lupin stuff but mostly a newer Lupin person apart from The Castle of Cagliostro, already own the lovely NIS America Premium Blu-ray set of Toradora (and their DVD Premium boxes of the series as well!) so no need to double dip as the video on those BDs is amazing and the English dub is ofc included on the HD release, Pani Poni Dash I was never really into - I'm more of an Azumanga Daioh person and also prefer various other comedy series by Akiyuki Shinbo to PPD, but I don't doubt there are many who wanted it so I'm happy for them, I really want the Manga UK dubs of Patlabor movies 1 & 2 on Blu-ray so whether I will buy these releases is determined by whether they are included here or not, didn't really enjoy the other Patlabor stuff much apart from the Early Days OVA which I might get but not entirely sure. Would quite like to pick up Big O but wasn't completely sold on it from the early episodes, I love Mawaru Penguindrum but already own the gorgeous Anime Limited Collector's Blu-ray Set, Memories is a great film but I have the AL CE of that too and no 4K player, will look for clips of Samurai Pizza Cats (the Eng dub version) to determine if it's for me, will do similar for Tales of the Abyss (but there not only evaluating dubbed version), and might or might not go for Argentosoma and/or Infinite Ryvius (thought the former is more likely for me than IR), Outlanders might be fu? Johji Manabe can draw some pretty sexy looking women IIRC so I'll weight that up against the likely fairly high price point per minute of anime XP

Friend C is a huge Digimon fan so I'm excited for them regarding the continuing licences for the franchise, I've yet to get into it but will probably give it a proper try at some point :)

Might try live-action licenses but IDK it's rare for me to actually get around to watching stuff like that, and the Roswell series could be neat, wondering if it's linked with the live-action US series Roswell? :)

Not all that much for me sadly. Discotek prices would stop me to upgrade some series that I'm not absolutely smitten with. But I'm happy for people who don't own them yet. Especially The Big O, such a cool series.. Will keep my eyes on Tales of the abyss and Outlanders though!

Also will pick up Welcome to Irabu's Office and maybe Dog of Flanders. Wish they would release the series as well, am always a bit iffy about compilation movies, because I would love to see the complete story. But people are very enthusiastic about it, so it worth a look:).

The subtitle wrapping on the AL UK BD is bad enough that I will probably pick up the Discotek release.

And I just bought Lupin part 2 on DVD last week.........I even read comments online, people saying they wouldn't release it on blu ray because of xyz. I guess they, and I, didn't think about SD blu ray. For the future, I will try and resist the FOMO.

I'll get Lupin Part II; I never bought the DVDs as the four sets were more than I wanted to pay to have the series; I'm more a fan of slightly newer Lupin (Parts IV and V specifically). I'm not sure of any of the rest of the announcements but this slate is more in line with things that may interest me than Discotek's more typical announcements of old robot shows and such.

For anyone not familiar with Outlanders, I found this promo video:

I used to buy Animage, Animedia, and some other random Japanese anime magazines back in the late 1980s and 1990s and remember this getting a lot of coverage at the time.
