Overseas The Discotek Media Thread (plus AnimEigo)

A.D Police getting a 4K release from AnimEigo.
They've also announced House of Five Leaves.

Had to check my notes to rejog me noggin' regarding AD Police, and this is the insight old/younger meeee had to share (ima assume each sentence covers one ep). Either that or 'tis a haiku.

--Why it'd be bad to sex robots: they'd get passionate and kill
--Why it'd be bad to say sex sucks with a lady whose sexual organs were replaced: she'd get angry and kill
--Why it'd be bad for a lady to rub herself on a cyborg: it'd feel nothing and kill

Rated 5/10. Definitely buying.

Hopefully the announcements will be more than 30% anime this time. Discotek have been diversifying way too much for my liking.

Bloody diversity... ruins everything. First our jobs, then our culture, and now they come for our anime. When will it ever end!?

Bar Monster - which tbh I'm not THAT excite for split into two, given a 70+ ep rewatch X Urusawa mystery pacing - I'm rather disinterested in most of discotek's licenses. AnimeEigo release far more interesting-to-meee stuff, allah Kamui/Black Jack. Would like more UY/CH/KORs, less... random mecha anime that history likely wisely chose to forget. Ikkoku I now know stuck in eternal limbo but surely some other classics of non-mecha variety exist.

@RWH I agree t'would be good if they rescued some of the more forgotten licenses, like Desert Punk and Speed Grapher. They could even do their SDonBlu ting if as assume only DVD in JP. Gonzo stuff there little chance of HD.

There's also stuff Central Park Media did in desperate need of a re-release: Now and Then, Here and There. Even if just a basic DVD quality rerelease, CPM's DVDs were so poor it'd be night and day--internet fan releases look excellent in comparison. Junkers Come Here - one of the best unknown anime films - I'd love to buy again, etcetc.

And that's not the craziest thing with that OVA, that would be the tonal dissonance from Bubblegum Crisis that it's a spin off from.

I always hope they’ll do some license rescues of the various DVD-only titles Funimation had licensed back in the day and subsequently lost over the years.
I think folks are going to have to get used to the idea that Crunchyroll are happy sitting on titles and letting them rot on streaming.

AoA aren't above sitting on rights either. P4TA and P4GA are both oop for years and haven't been available for streaming for at least 5 years either before suddenly being made available yesterday on YouTube of all places until August 19th.

It skipped my brain that AD Police and Bubblegum share the same universe.

Granted, I'm no cyberpunk anime afficiando, yet I do recall two things Bubblegum: all-girl, moe before moe, crime fighters (with one that sings about hurricanes) + body form fitting attire. Where as AD only gore/sex/grim remain in distant memory.

The OVA era is something of a fever dream when viewed today, 'innit.

Oh I don’t doubt they’re sitting on/hoarding some good IPs like the CEO from Smiling Friends.

In any case hopefully Discotek can deliver some surprises, though an educated guess would be more Lupin TV Special Collections - I’d also like to get Part 2 reissued in SDBD or BD if they’re able to do so.

More Lupin is always a safe bet. I’m thinking Zenigata and the Two Lupins since GKIDS never announced it.

I might have said this before but crappyroll sitting on series they have unfortunately licensed is akin to disney sitting on their most popular films and letting them rot. I think that any anime that crappyroll licenses should have a non exclusivity clause that states that if it's not released in a physical format in a reasonable amount of time then the rights to it return to the creator(s).

It would be nice if Discotek could get the rights to release Super Sentai, now Shout's licence has run out.

It's a shame Hasbro (who own the US distribution rights after they bought Power Rangers) would prefer to just sit on it rather than allow anyone to do anything with it.

Some of Animeigo's other recent announcements sound interesting. Quotes from their newsletter:

Sakon the Ventriloquist (1999-2000, 26 eps) – Sakon is a quiet guy, and a puppeteer in the classic Edo Period style. His puppet Ukon, however, is gregarious and sharp-witted. Together, they become involved in a number of dark murder mysteries… and it’s up to the two of them to solve ’em! Based on the manga illustrated by Takeshi Obata (Death Note, Hikaru no Go). Coming to SD-BD in fall 2026!

Drucker in the Dugout (2011, 10 eps) – When Minami takes over as manager for her high school’s failing baseball team, she has no idea what she’s supposed to be doing. So she stops by the book store and buys a book on Management. Turns out, she’s picked up Peter Drucker’s famous business management textbook. Undaunted, she decides to apply his principles to the team… with surprisingly good results! One of the most educational anime ever made, and a must for anybody who’s put in charge of other people. Coming in late 2026.

Also, they've license rescued House of Five Leaves.

Here's the full list for Round 7 of Discotek's latest Deep Dive additions are now available for arrival in mid-August.

As a reminder, the titles are in SRP but in return you do get points on the MediaOCD Store ($1 for every 10 points). The previous batch are all still available but I recommend ordering some sooner than later if you're desperate. UK shipping supports pre-paid VAT but there's always Stackry as an option if you plan to consolidate packages from Crunchyroll Store and Sentai Store together with MediaOCD's.

The titles included in Batch 7 are as follows:
