Overseas The Discotek Media Thread (plus AnimEigo)

Did I mishear or did they say that Zone of the Enders is native HD? I'll probably upgrade from my DVDs if so. It's a better series than you would expect from a 00s game spin-off, and a rare case of an anime where all the characters are adults.

The Yello version of Cobra was conspicuously absent from the October release slate. I guess that's slipped to next year. Maybe the inner mysteries of 25fps are too much for Americans to handle. 😅

At 1:15:27 in the stream, they do say "I believe it's Full HD." In 4:3 aspect ratio.

Monster was an awesome surprise, Day 1 pre-order for me for that - I wish Discotek would release Monster in Steelbooks, but if they only put it out in a standard release I'll probably frankenstein the Blu-ray discs into the Siren Visual DVD box set I have. I'll also be in for the Cagliostro Steelbook, probably all 3 Higurashi releases since they said they will be making a slew of subtitle improvements over the Sentai releases I have, the 2nd Urotsukidoji release, Golden Boy, and the Shin Aim for the Ace Blu-ray, since I have their other three releases. Not too bad for non-mecha anime announcements for Diskotek this time around.

I will wait for @NormanicGrav's summary to find out everything announced since I don't enjoy watching the livestreams, but so far from what has been mentioned by posts above doesn't look like anything for me, again.

Monster is great to see, now complete for its English release (the Netflix stream did not includes its well liked English dub, it is now here). No more need of a obscure Australian DVD release. The Digimon movies of 4-6 being included is nice, continues that, they didn't mention this at all (Sound Cadence is on the slip backcover art though) but it sounds like they have quietly redubbed parts of Revenge of Diaboromon to bring back Joshua Seth (and possibly 1 other) as Tai who was voice matched in the original dub by Jason Spisak. May well be more parts of the collection having similar treatment.

Castle of Cagliostro is something I'd like but its an awkward rerelease, always was gonna be though I suppose, and Zegapain is finally being released after Sentai announced it, but then nothing came of it in the end.

A very impressive selection of announcements - Monster is the obvious standout but I’ll likely pick all of these up in time.

Discotek Day live-stream announcements, some of which were exclusive to the stream and were not present at the Otakon panel. Their next live-stream is apparently going to be January.

  • Blu-ray (Re-release)
Another release based on the classic Miyazaki film, this time not only presented on a steelbook format but also includes a brand new English dub produced by Epcar Entertainment with the aim of being faithful to the original Japanese version and more natural sounding, featuring the cast involved with the recent dubbed Lupin releases from Discotek Media (& also Lupin Part II) including Tony Oliver, Richard Epcar, Michelle Ruff, Lex Lang and Doug Erholtz. #3 - Urotsukidoji Collection 2: Sequels of the Overfiend
  • 1990-1996 - Phoenix Entertainment - Movies & OVA Series - 10 episodes & 4 films
  • Standard Definition on Blu-ray (New license)
Another Hentai collection which was to be expected considering Collection 1 was labelled on their first Urotsukidoji release, but the surprise here is that the rest of the franchise is also included. This release includes every version ever released due to differences between the theatrical and OVA series.

This collection consists of:
  • Legend of the Demon Womb (1990-91) - Both the two episode OVAs & theatrical film that many will be familiar with from Manga Entertainment's release, but uncut and uncensored like the US versions.
  • Legend of the Demon God Urotsukidōji: The Future (1992-93) - Both the four episode OVAs & theatrical film known in the west as Urotsukidōji: Return of the Overfiend.
  • Legend of the Demon God Urotsukidōji: The Wandering (1993-95) - Both the three episode OVAs & theatrical film known in the west as Urotsukidōji: Inferno Road.
  • Legend of the Demon God Urotsukidōji: The Final Act (1996) - The single OVA episode also known as Urotsukidōji: The Final Chapter in the west.
  • Lord of Chaos Theater V2: The Legend of Crazed Demon Beasts - A recap film.
The vintage English dubs that exist are also included here with Movie 2, OVA Series 3 and an edited OVA Series 4. Many of these versions are being released in the west for the first time.

Extras include promos, special erotic collections, extensive liner notes and more. Considered one of the most complicated discs MediaOCD have ever worked on. Sadly there's no HD masters available for the rest. Like previous adult titles, Crunchyroll Store will not list this one but it should be available via Amazon US and MediaOCD Store.

  • 1995 - A.P.P.P. - OVA Series - 6 episodes
  • Blu-ray (Re-release)
The cult classic OVA series is finally returning to print and on Blu-ray, with both the original Japanese audio track and classic English dub. Upscaled from the original existing masters but it does look rough and blendy here and there according to the team.

Extras include an all-new commentary from Kintaro voice actor Doug Smith, who also designed the cover for this release and the ADV VHS releases.

Another Sunrise title rescued from the failed package deal that Sentai Filmworks once had a decade ago. Mike Toole considers this the secret best anime of the 2000s. This release include both the original Japanese audio track and the classic English dub by Elastic Media. Also included is the 2016 film Zegapain ADP (a prequel film that is mostly new stuff according to the team), never before released in English but subtitled only with a new translation.

All the extras are on a disc of its own because there were so many. Another surprise and in fact this is the first for Discotek in a long while is they're also including the newest Zegapain film Zegapain STA from Sunrise that only just got released a year ago. Also subtitled only.

Thanks. A lot of announcements and some I know have been asked for a lot like Monster. Nothing for me though. I already have their old release of Castle of Cagliostro and don't care about dubs and don't like steelbooks so no need for this new version.

I am curious what Golden Boy will look like. I believe Justin has said in the past that it wasn't happening due what the source looked like unless something changed. Or maybe they decided a release is better than no release even if it's not ideal; that seems like what they did with Angel Heart.

It's good to see that Discotek haven't given up on Aim for the Ace, though I was hoping for the next OAV series, not yet another remake of the original series. Maybe in another year or two...?

Do Animeigo need a hug or something? The way the bulk of their recent licences are focusing on miserable or terminally ill children is a bit creepy.

While I have a few discotek releases most of what they've released now and in the past has had very little interest for me.

OCTOBER 2025 SLATE

Also revealed is the next slate of releases scheduled for 28th October 2025. They referenced it will continue as either bi-monthly or quarterly slates, which will disappoint many but to me it allows breathing room for anyone who wants to catch up on their catalogue of releases.

I wasn't expecting a new dub and re-release of The Castle of Cagliostro, there'll be no hesitation in me picking this up though, that's for sure. I do wonder if they'll do another 4K re-release down-the-line though to include this new dub.

Monster is a massive title to finally get released on blu-ray, another easy buy from me. I've never watched or read it but I've been wanting to for years so what better time than with this release.

I adore Golden Boy so I'll happily upgrade my DVD to the blu-ray release.

I still need to pick up the other Digimon releases but good to see more of the movies coming.

Shin-chan is a series I've always been intrigued in checking out so I will possibly pick this up.

I've never heard of Zegapain but from the positive reaction this announcement has had this'll be one for me to look into.

I'd like to watch Aim for the Ace so I have a few releases to catch up on but good to see more of it coming.

Zone of the Enders is a game I've only ever played a little bit of but have been meaning to give a proper play at some point so whenever I do I'll think about getting this release if I enjoy the games.

Project Arms also intrigues me.

It's also good to see more retro video games cartoons getting new releases as well with Mega Man here.

The Golden Boy upscale did not look good on stream. Extremely flat picture, dull colours and very jittery movement from the deblend and inverse IVTC process. We also know the film elements are not lost either thanks to that tweet. Despite my love for Golden Boy that's just not a product I see myself supporting given all of above.
