Rate the last anime you watched out of 10

I watched Eva 2.22, and then I damn well watched it again straight away so it scores 22.22/10 for me (don't worry about the math).

In some ways I feel like Rei's character got "dumbed down" so people can see that she is actually "passionate" in her own way without having to actually do the thinking for themselves, but it fits the tone of turning it into virtually an all-out action movie anyway, so it's all good.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 7.5/10

Not the first time I watched it, but went back for a rewatch. Still a good, solid series for the most part, definately better (from memory) than the second one. However it dropped one and a half marks as always for the Tachikomas. WORST. IDEA. EVER. (actually, that is Evangelion, but yeah) They so ruin the mood at the worst possible moments. so it drops those points. not bad otherwise.

Lupin III : The Secret of Mamo 7/10

This is the second Lupin film I've seen after Miyazaki's Castle of Cagliostro and I'm guessing it's much closer to the original version than his 'rescue the princess' movie. (Although that was also good!)

I loved the dated animation, unique character designs and crazy action sequences (the car chase in this was better than Miyazaki's surely?). But seriously, did this film really end with a giant brain floating out into space and exploding?. Because that's just insane frankly. The film got more and more ridiculous as it went on, but it was always fun. Terrible, TERRIBLE voice acting though. Who is 'Loop on'?

All in all I think I'm becoming something of a Lupin fan. I really like the supporting characters, Jinken and Fujiko :p especially. Time to find more...

I recommend Fuma Conspiracy, a high-budget OVA from 1987 that's closer in tone to Castle of Cagliostro (my favourite film ever) than just about any other Lupin movie. The excellent R1 DVD is available from the terribly-named Diskotek.

Another good one is the TV movie First Contact, which tells the (non canon?) story of how the Lupin first met Jigen, Fujiko, and Goemon. My brief write-up in this very thread.

Cheers for that Fabric, I'll bookmark those suggestions on Amazon. I think it's probably time I sorted myself out with a region free DVD player and checking these out is the perfect excuse to purchase one.

If you find this set for a reasonable price, buy it.

It collects 5 movies and is closer in tone to Mamo than it is to Castle, but it has more serious / realistic movies in it. It's a great way to start in Lupin's world. I've seen the series back home, as it was aired as Cliffhanger in Latin America and I really wish I could find it in a language I can understand.

I seem to be late to the Lupin love-in, but yes - this. It's got more than a whiff of Indiana Jones about it, but Fuma is a great little OAV that's well worth picking up. The look and feel of the film are close enough to Cagliostro that you could almost call it a direct sequel.

Did the series not get at least a partial release on R1 DVD? I seem to remember Funimation being involved...

as a matter of fact, you're right. Looks like Geneon released 15 volumes of it. Not sure how far it goes into the series though. Where is Sy, when he's needed?

I am on a roll at the moment...

New Dominion Tank Police - 5/10
(Eps 1-3)

Had this DVD sitting around for a while and was bored so popped it on. I quite liked the old strip that appeared in Manga Mania years back but this is somewhat different. There was no mention of the pollution plauging Newport City and Baku and his gang aren't the bad guys? I'm assuming they may turn up later...

Anyway, the first few episodes are pretty poor. I know this is supposed to be light hearted but there's no excuse for the plots to be this simplistic. Unless they're part of the joke and i'm just not getting the subtleties? Some of the lines from episode 2 had me cringing:

"I wonder if that shadowy figure on the screen had something to do with Sharon's death?"

"Well the brain operation will be complete shortly so I might as well tell you of all my evil plans blah blah blah"

Who got paid to write that!?

Despite the simplistic plots, cheesy lines and (sometimes) awful animation, it is genuinely funny in places. I love the police commander who is shown absolutely no respect whatsoever. Dominion also scores an extra point for the awesome intro music. It's cheesily good and I've been humming it all morning. I think I found these early episodes endearing rather than them acutally being of any quality. Seems it makes for fun 'switch off' viewing.

Yeah, much as I do like NDTP, it's not exactly deep. I think Super Play more or less hit the nail on the head when they described it as a "half-hour guitar rock video with guns".

The New Dominion series is generally considered a follow-up to the manga and, without wishing to give too much away, Buaku himself doesn't appear at all. The pollution is still present (notably in episode 4 / eight), but it seems to be far less serious than it was in the original series.

If you liked the manga and you haven't already seen it, you might get more out the original 4 Dominion oavs than NDTP. The animation is a bit more rough and ready, but it's a prequel to the manga and is much closer to it in tone and style.

edit: Just out of curiosity, does the DVD release restore the vocals to the opening theme? I remember the singer was curiously absent on the VHS...

Thanks for that Prof! Ah yes! Super Play, this series is really that old? The other 4 act Dominon might be worth me checking out, but it's gonna have to go way down on my list as I have quite a long list of stuff I want to get first. Cheers for the reccomendation though.

The voals are most defintely are in the opening credits in the version I have. It's the standard Manga UK DVD in slip case version. The menus are pretty bad though, there doesn't seem to be a select episode option?

There is an episode selection function on the R2 Manga NDTP release. You see, the episodes are compiled as a single continuous .vts file on the disc, and every other chapter marks the beginning of a new episode. Oddly enough, only every second episode features the end credits however.

Still, it could be worse. It could be dub-only like its predecessor. (Alas, the dual-audio R1 release is hard to obtain for a decent price.)

I have three of the movies included in that set. Dead or Alive is great. Twilight Gemini is okay, more notable for the gratuitous Fujiko nudity than anything else. Harimao's Treasure is directed by my arch-nemesis Osamu Dezaki and is therefore automatically disregarded.

As for Dominion, I wasn't able to make it through either the first or second series. It's the kind of lightweight action stuff that just doesn't work for me, and I didn't find it particularly amusing either. Sorry Prof =(

Eh, not to worry. I can understand that it wouldn't appeal to everyone, I think I just liked the notion of having a post-apocalyptic world in which people still make puerile jokes.

And yeah, the R1 disc does seem to be going for silly money now. There's one on ebay at the moment, but it's £38 by the time you add postage and even I would hesitate to pay that for it.

fake edit: also, I like the look of Dead or Alive.

Second Spin have a couple of copies of Dead or Alive for silly money. Shipping to the UK is $5, but you could wait for the next discount + free shipping promotion (though there will be a minimum order value, usually $20).
