Rate the last anime you watched out of 10

Redline 7/10

It puts me in mind of a 90's anime remade with a decent budget; all the 90's anime trends are there: simplistic plot, ludicrous action with characters only winning by pulling out even more extreme **** than the other racers/ wanting to win bad enough, gratuitous tits scene, smug villains, eldritch abominations.

What more could you want! It also features a biochemical monster called Funky boy! In my opinion this was still better then like 85% of feature length anime from the 90's.

The end was really abrupt though and the funky boy thing didn't go anywhere... the subplot literally just got cut off before it had even gotten going, but the visual design was glorious and Madhouse never fail to impress.

I think the only puropse of the Funky boy subplot was to have an excuse to animate a glorious fight between it and the mutant whale:) such a good idea.

As for the ending, for me it wasn't abrupt it just didn't outstay it's welcome(as most movies do) and ended on a superb climax.

Oh I agree, most 90's anime movies I watch get a 5 or lower :p and it wasn't just funky boy that was cut short, it was the backstory of JP and whatserface as well as the guy who inspired JP in the first place. I feel like it was implied that the old gangster was the guy, but after he got punched we don't see him again either.

Armor Hunter Mellowlink

I thought Chirico Cuvie was an awkward name, but he's got nothing on Mellowlink Arity.

This 12-part OAV spinoff from the Votoms series provides an interesting change of perspective, as we see things not from the cockpit of a mech, but instead from the eyes of the anti-armour infantry.

After being stripped of their mechs and forced into the trenches, a unit of Gilgamesh soldiers is sacrificed on the battlefield as part of a shady deal done by the higher-ups. Mellowlink, the sole survivor, swears revenge for his fallen comrades and begins systematically hunting down those responsible. He's helped along the way by an army investigator assigned to look into the incident, and a card-shark stage magician who seems to have a hidden agenda.

While it suffers from poor characterisation and gets off to an underwhelming start, the series improves steadily as it goes on and boasts some very accomplished action scenes. The structure feels oddly videogame-like, with most episodes seeing Mellowlink squaring off against a new foe, always moving towards the end boss. This does keep things quite varied though, as the action takes place in a wide variety of locales and different styles, memorably including a duel in an upturned dropship, balanced precariously on its nose (think of the coach at the end of the Italian Job).

With its stilted dialogue and slightly contrived combat (Mellowlink now refuses to use a mech), it's hardly unmissable, but as a standalone story with plenty of gun-rattling action, it should certainly appeal to any real-robot fans looking for something a little different.

You don't have a younger sister, do you, Fabby?
I do, actually, and the age gap is about the same as that between Kyousuke and Kirino. Still think some of the histrionics are a bit OTT.
Hmm, well in that case we'll just have to agree t̶h̶a̶t̶ ̶y̶o̶u̶'̶r̶e̶ ̶w̶r̶o̶n̶g̶ to disagree. My relationship with my sister has been pretty OTT and emotional at times IRL, so I can easily see OreImo as a deliberately OTT anime version of something approaching believable.

Strikethrough!? What foul trickery is this!?

While I was protective of and supportive towards my sister (when we weren't tearing one another's heads off), I can't quite understand why Kyousuke went as far as he did on several occasions. You know what I'd have done at the end? Tore up my travel plans and "got to work" on Kuroneko while I had the chance... and surely that's not just me!

@Prof: I should get around to watching Votoms. The first three DVD sets are cheap as chips but the last one is OOP and in demand ;_;

I concur. As your post hides no code I demand you surrender the secret of using strikethrough on AUKN.

And damn you both for actually making me semi-interested in such a show as OreImo, even if the prime motivator is to share opinions of my sister.

My Oreimo is queued up as my other half wants to watch it too (bahhh) so this ongoing conversation thread has been bewildering and fascinating. I have no sisters, though I do have two younger brothers.

Heh, I watched Oremo sometime ago.

I enjoyed the show, the normal side of it (rather than the slightly more seedy potential connotations) of it reminded me of my brother when we were both younger. I wasn't into anime at the time, and he was, in fact heavily to the point of cosplaying etc, and I was having similar (lesser strength) arguments with the family to just let him do what he want, and not mentioning some of the debateable material I found on his PC at the time :D

This being so, I also felt the show missed the mark somewhat despite enjoying segments of it; and I really did end up disliking Kirino - like Fabricated brought up, but was able to ignore, she REALLY was unlikeable at times, especially given what the Kyosuke sacrificed for her at times.

Now I've seen arguments that, like the OP, thats because she doesn't know how to express herself, but that didn't stop her from coming across as a hideously ungrateful, selfish little ***** at times.

I also found myself getting frustrated by just how much of a walkover Kyosuke was at times, if he'd had more backbone I'd have found it far more interesting.

My favourite characters were probably Manami and Kuroneko.

This is how I rated the series elsewhere
I'd give the show probably a 7.
Not the greatest show ever, and certainly not a work of art, but it had some amusing moments.
In some sense I also quite liked the fact that the show didnt paint otaku in the most positive light (although to be fair I think there is a difference in how far gone most western fans/otaku probably are compared to the Japanese ones), as I'm sure perhaps the lack of social acceptance/awareness of it, has probably preyed on most of us at some point or another, unless you've been lucky enough to grow up surrounded by a group of friends or people with other similar interests.
Genshiken handled this probably with more subtlety, and a slower hand, but it was still nice to see the genre poking itself a little.

I think part of the reason I enjoyed is it also somewhat reminded me of my own relationship with my brother 5/6 years ago, we never got on as badly as my Kirino and Kyousuke, but he did have a much more rampant hobby than he does now, cosplay and the likes. At the time I didn't really have any interest in this area (what want wrong? haha), but like Kyousuke in the series, I was much more 'whatever' in terms of his hobby than the parents, and also hid the fact I knew he'd been looking at stuff that...well they really didnt need to know about. Not sure he even knows I know, but I guess in this sense it was somewhat nostalgic.

Now we're both older he's calmed down, and I've moved in a bit, so we talk on a more even level, which in some ways was slowly how the series was moving.

other poster there said:
Kyousuke's actions probably only made sense to those in a similar situation and with a similar personality

That may be true, but he probably would have gelled a lot better with other people, and even those who've been in this situation if he'd just had a bit more backbone...
Much as I got the series, as I mentioned above, I found myself a lot more fond of Kuroneko and Manami than Kyousuke by the end, simply because he had no sense of backbone for most of the series which made him feel a lot weaker than he should have been

So yeah, I didn't hate it, I had fun, but I did have a hate/amused mindset about Kirino by the end.

redline

this animes animation remains me of dead leafs and gurren larganns animation, it looks so funky and the characters in it look like something bikers *like hells angels * would put on for a tattoo.

the movies fast and furious and i like the kick ass race * not giving spoils *.

its good but the ending cheesy it just ends with a kiss literary while flouting and the main character looks like a the fonss from happy days lol.

but it a good movie

8/10

Ah, sadly I'm not surprised. There's an excellent box set in the shape of an ammo tin, which is now somewhere next to hens teeth in the scarcity stakes.
Might be worth mentioning as well that the earlier release of the series is best avoided - the picture quality is pretty bad.

Mwahahahaha. (I googled "strikethrough text generator" or something one time, and bookmarked a site that does it for you, don't have the bookmark on this PC though)

Strikethrough is one of my favorite "comedy" tools, it has to be said.

Oh... well... I mean... that's a different thing entirely, maybe. ^^;

loooooool, now I am interested on every level in you watching this show! Hopefully it gets a somewhat down-priced release here someday to help encourage you to go for it. :s

That will do, I think, even though I imagine the older sister/younger brother relationship to be considerably different to the reverse. Also, I kind of expect you to like the show anyway, so it won't be quite as fun as with Fabby and potentially ayase. ^^;

MM!

*laughs a bite* ok where do i start with this...............

ok the main character is a super masochist ( he gets off by being beaten up by girls)
his mom and sister is in love with him ( a son and brother complex )
his boss likes 2D characters
his best friend likes dressing up like a woman ( cross-dressers)
one guy has a liolcon complex ( likes lil girls and hes still in school )
one girl likes both girls and her boyfriend (BI)
one of his friend girls is a sadist ( a total bitch )
and the other friend girl is afraid of guys and when the main character touches her she hits him ( but she likes him )
and a female nurse likes taking pictures of girls

that should give you the basic idea how awesome it is.
its a wild raid and highly recommended its sooooo funny i freakin loved it

To be fair to him, MM, if it's the series I'm thinking of, is a slightly more high profile series than some I've seen him reviewing; it's deliberately intentioned as a comedy, which is why it's extremely random, and the setup is...well...bizzare/random.

Based off a book series the author never finished, as he died part way through.

Given your fondness for this sort of thing, I know of something you might find of interest AF. There is an anime-influenced Canadian webcomic called Demon Candy: Parallel which is all about fetishism. You can read it on the artists DeviantArt account and there are print editions as well.
