I do, actually, and the age gap is about the same as that between Kyousuke and Kirino. Still think some of the histrionics are a bit OTT.ilmaestro said:You don't have a younger sister, do you, Fabby?

It puts me in mind of a 90's anime remade with a decent budget; all the 90's anime trends are there: simplistic plot, ludicrous action with characters only winning by pulling out even more extreme **** than the other racers/ wanting to win bad enough, gratuitous tits scene, smug villains, eldritch abominations.
What more could you want! It also features a biochemical monster called Funky boy! In my opinion this was still better then like 85% of feature length anime from the 90's.
The end was really abrupt though and the funky boy thing didn't go anywhere... the subplot literally just got cut off before it had even gotten going, but the visual design was glorious and Madhouse never fail to impress.
I think the only puropse of the Funky boy subplot was to have an excuse to animate a glorious fight between it and the mutant whale such a good idea.
As for the ending, for me it wasn't abrupt it just didn't outstay it's welcome(as most movies do) and ended on a superb climax.
Hmm, well in that case we'll just have to agree t̶h̶a̶t̶ ̶y̶o̶u̶'̶r̶e̶ ̶w̶r̶o̶n̶g̶ to disagree. My relationship with my sister has been pretty OTT and emotional at times IRL, so I can easily see OreImo as a deliberately OTT anime version of something approaching believable.fabricatedlunatic said:I do, actually, and the age gap is about the same as that between Kyousuke and Kirino. Strikethrough!? What foul trickery is this!?ilmaestro said:Hmm, well in that case we'll just have to agree t̶h̶a̶t̶ ̶y̶o̶u̶'̶r̶e̶ ̶w̶r̶o̶n̶g̶ to disagree. I concur. As your post hides no code I demand you surrender the secret of using strikethrough on AUKN.fabricatedlunatic said:Strikethrough!? I'd give the show probably a 7.
Not the greatest show ever, and certainly not a work of art, but it had some amusing moments.
In some sense I also quite liked the fact that the show didnt paint otaku in the most positive light (although to be fair I think there is a difference in how far gone most western fans/otaku probably are compared to the Japanese ones), as I'm sure perhaps the lack of social acceptance/awareness of it, has probably preyed on most of us at some point or another, unless you've been lucky enough to grow up surrounded by a group of friends or people with other similar interests.
Genshiken handled this probably with more subtlety, and a slower hand, but it was still nice to see the genre poking itself a little.
I think part of the reason I enjoyed is it also somewhat reminded me of my own relationship with my brother 5/6 years ago, we never got on as badly as my Kirino and Kyousuke, but he did have a much more rampant hobby than he does now, cosplay and the likes. At the time I didn't really have any interest in this area (what want wrong? haha), but like Kyousuke in the series, I was much more 'whatever' in terms of his hobby than the parents, and also hid the fact I knew he'd been looking at stuff that...well they really didnt need to know about. Not sure he even knows I know, but I guess in this sense it was somewhat nostalgic.
Now we're both older he's calmed down, and I've moved in a bit, so we talk on a more even level, which in some ways was slowly how the series was moving.
other poster there said:Kyousuke's actions probably only made sense to those in a similar situation and with a similar personality
That may be true, but he probably would have gelled a lot better with other people, and even those who've been in this situation if he'd just had a bit more backbone...
Much as I got the series, as I mentioned above, I found myself a lot more fond of Kuroneko and Manami than Kyousuke by the end, simply because he had no sense of backbone for most of the series which made him feel a lot weaker than he should have been

Mwahahahaha. (I googled "strikethrough text generator" or something one time, and bookmarked a site that does it for you, don't have the bookmark on this PC though)ayase said:I concur. As your post hides no code I demand you surrender the secret of using strikethrough on AUKN.
Oh... well... I mean... that's a different thing entirely, maybe. ^^;fabricatedlunatic said:While I was protective of and supportive towards my sister (when we weren't tearing one another's heads off), I can't quite understand why Kyousuke went as far as he did on several occasions. You know what I'd have done at the end? Tore up my travel plans and "got to work" on Kuroneko while I had the chance... and surely that's not just me!
loooooool, now I am interested on every level in you watching this show! Hopefully it gets a somewhat down-priced release here someday to help encourage you to go for it. :sayase said:And damn you both for actually making me semi-interested in such a show as OreImo, even if the prime motivator is to share opinions of my sister.
fabricatedlunatic said:(Now I understand ilmaestro's eagerness for me to watch the show.)
That will do, I think, even though I imagine the older sister/younger brother relationship to be considerably different to the reverse. Also, I kind of expect you to like the show anyway, so it won't be quite as fun as with Fabby and potentially ayase. ^^;Rui said:My Oreimo is queued up as my other half wants to watch it too (bahhh) so this ongoing conversation thread has been bewildering and fascinating. I have no sisters, though I do have two younger brothers

To be fair to him, MM, if it's the series I'm thinking of, is a slightly more high profile series than some I've seen him reviewing; it's deliberately intentioned as a comedy, which is why it's extremely random, and the setup is...well...bizzare/random.
Based off a book series the author never finished, as he died part way through.
