PlayStation Retro Discussion (inc. PS3, digital PS1 & PS2 Classics & PS Plus Premium)

Looks like it's not just the first Timesplitters being rereleased. All three games in the series are being added to PS Plus Premium on the 20th. No word on whether they'll be available for separate purchase too.

For anyone who has PS Plus Premium, I highly and I mean HIGHLY recommend checking out the Timesplitters series when it becomes available, Timesplitters 2 and Future Perfect are two of the best FPS games ever made, while the first one’s alright if a bit of a trial run for what would become the absolute classics that are the next two games, IMO Embracer had no valid excuse to shut down Free Radical who deserved far better 😠

They will be available to purchase, especially as they're from the same publisher who also added Summoner to the store.

Speaking of classic games, Thrillville and Herc's Adventures were recently updated to feature trophy support.

Whoever added the UK PSN listings for Timesplitters has screwed up. If you search by title, it looks like only the first game is available. You need to go into the product page for that one and bring up the list of editions to find the sequels. This is the same nonsense that happened when R-Type Final 3 was listed as an edition of Final 2, an error that has never been fixed.

The good news is this shouldn't stop you buying any of them; it's just going to mean that a lot of people won't know that all three games are available.

We are back again with another batch of classics. Last month we had the TimeSplitters trilogy from the PS2 line-up which Deep Sliver mentioned will have trophy support potentially later down the line.

This month, we go into cult classic territory for PS2 games as well as a first party PSP game that was leaked by Sony's own newsletter range.

Mister Mosquito (PlayStation 2)
Developed by Zoom (Phalanx, Zero Divide), this 2001 obscure title is literally you being a mosquito going after Japanese humans while avoid being slapped by them. Honestly this is one I'm happy to see make a return for modern audiences as I've heard its pretty entertaining. Sony published the game in Japan while Edios & Fresh Games handled distribution internationally so in theory there should be trophy support included.

Secret Agent Clank (PlayStation Portable)
Developed by High Impact Games (Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier, Disney Princess: My Fairytale Adventure) in 2008, this is the original PSP version of the Ratchet & Clank spin-off which centered on Clank with a James Bond style approach. I recall people enjoying this one alongside Size Matters so I'm curious to see how it plays. Like the previous games in the franchise, expect trophy support to be made available.

SkyGunner (PlayStation 2)
Developed by PixelArts, this 2001 combat fight simulation game has pretty much gone under the radar. Sony published the game in Japan but Atlus USA handled distribution in North America whilst Europe did not receive this title. It's also the developer's first project which I read was originally planned to be released for PS1 back in the day. This game may receive trophy support given Sony's involvement.

Mister Mosquito is a nice surprise, will definitely be buying that, always wanted to play it. I'll get Secret Agent Clank as well to continue my R&C series playthrough.

That's giving me flashbacks to the early PS2 era when it felt like almost every game was doing something new. I can tell you one game from circa 2001 that will almost certainly never get rereleased on PSN: Stretch Panic (aka. Freak Out). No way would the puritan Sony of 2024 approve a game where your main attack involves stretching women's giant boobs and letting them snap back like elastic.

Dino Crisis and Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen are coming in October. Also, some PS1 games are getting the remaster treatment: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 on 10th Dec and Lunar 1 & 2 next spring. I've still got my PS1 versions of the Lunar games, but I'll get these if they reverse the annoying game balance changes that Working Designs made for the old US release.

It exists. Dino Crisis has been officially confirmed to make its appearance on PlayStation Plus Premium later this year, after being leaked multiple times by Sony themselves two years ago. This also marks the first Capcom title to be added onto the service since the original Resident Evil Director's Cut was added at launch which is still the only title to remain exclusive to the service.

Also joining Dino Crisis is Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, the 1996 action adventure game that Silicon Knights and Crystal Dynamics made before Soul Reaver (Soul Reaver itself is getting the remastered treatment later this December).

Both games were released on PlayStation 3 so you should be entitled to own them for free when they arrive on the service.

Sony have revealed their October 2024 Classics line-up.

Dino Crisis (PlayStation)
Released in 1999, this survival horror game developed by Capcom is a cult classic in itself. I suppose Jurassic Park meets Resident Evil is a good comparison, but do not be fooled as these dinosaurs can randomly appear in your room at any point. At least you have guns and fields to fend them off. This has been previously released on PlayStation 3's Classics line-up (alongside its sequel) and was leaked to be part of the PS Plus Premium slate since Day One of the relaunch. Sony officially revealed it during their latest State of Play and its not long before you can relive the dino crisis. While Capcom hasn't made Resident Evil Director's Cut available to purchase, the 'free-to-own' part should in theory be available for Dino Crisis if you own the PS3 digital version like it did with REDC (I own this so I can confirm when its available next week).

Forbidden Siren (PlayStation 2)
Released in 2003 and also known as Siren over in Japan and North America, this is a survival horror game developed by the Project Siren team within Japan Studio, who are former members of Konami who helped create the Silent Hill franchise. This zombie game set in Japan is a cult classic and I've only played the remake/reimagining version SIREN BLOOD CURSE which was interesting. This is also the first PlayStation 2 game to be re-released from the PS2 on PS4 line-up, as it will also be available on PlayStation 5 so this should be using the new emulator. The previous version did have trophies so I'm expecting the same list or an updated one, while its not clear if you have to rebuy the game if you bought the PS4 version prior.

I hope Metal Slug Anthology gets rereleased on the new emulator. The current PS4 version is unplayable due to the input lag.

There's really only one big reason I play older games over newer ones. That is the content is solely focused on enriching the game's universe and the player's experience. This is vague right so let me go into a little more detail. I don't like to see political agendas, spliced representation measures or microtransactions in the games I play. All of these I perceive to be things that do not focus on enriching the game's universe or immersion but instead their purpose is to bring this universe (or society) into the games I love so that I'm more aware. I'm playing a video game for some fun, at the point I don't wanna know about the real life universe, I wanna see this game's universe with at least some of my fantasies realized be that stuff like life in a different regime of physics (moving around the world in ways totally impossible irl), impossible beings (Species that don't exist in this reality, optimally beautiful or the complete opposite females or overpowered af chars) I don't buy a game to be tied down in that univertse by exactly the same things that tie this one down, let people have their fun. Overall older games have most if not all of those things and it makes them way more fun, it's preceisely the larger distance between reality and the game's universe that makes it fun for me.
