I’ve heard the Monogatari series be described as an arthouse harem anime before now, one day I’ll get around to watching it all and see what I make of it all.

I caught up. It is not the amazing anime everyone makes it out to be, it's all pretty generic. Except Kizumonogatari, I'll admit that those are some damn good movies.

Hmm I see, well it’s interesting to see a critique that isn’t overwhelming praise. I’ll still give it a chance when I have the time.
 
I tend to see it get a lot of praise but I suppose it depends on where you look. The series must be doing something right if it’s got that many parts to it.
 
wrt ecchi, it's just a case of different strokes, isn't it? No-one can really be wrong or right, it would be a boring world if everyone liked the same thing.

Personally, I prefer straight-up porn to ecchi - I’ll take a nice on-model dōjinshi or image set of characters I like over vaguely embarrassing Carry On style shenanigans any day. In my ideal world creators would simply produce optional purchase official pornographic supplements (though I'm fairly sure some of them already do that under a pseudonym, or they have some very talented imitators) so I wouldn't have to wade through so much off-model stuff.

Also I liked the look of this, it looked rather adorable and I noticed it was on HiDive. It didn't disappoint. In this instance I will not be requiring pornography.

I must be the only one then who can't seem to love Kizumono somehow. It's seriously well animated and has great cinematogrpahy, but something about it just feels really weird. .... uncanny. Somehow too self-serious, while still containing most of the stuff from the novels that clearly weren't meant to seem that serious. (No Game No Life Zero runs into the a similiar pit for me.) The 4th Wall was probably too firm due to all that silence and lack of pop-culture oozing nonsense-talk-bantering. And the vibrant-colourful colour palette I mostly associate with the franchise isn't present either.

Ah my poor attempt at humour. The part about doujinshi was aimed at the original part of your post.
I definitely think some stuff shouldn't be lewded and H&M is one. Normally after watching a show and liking the characters some of it is just out of character so I avoid those for example I've seen Yuru Camp ones and that's just wrong. Sometimes it would be in character for example I've seen Girls' Last Tour ones and I can imagine Yuu being curious about it.

When I was in Akihabara in animate I think it was, I saw loads of Yuru Camp official merchandise and it was all bikinis at the beach stuff. I mean it was a lot tamer than you're talking about but it still didn't feel right. I think there's always gonna be a market for that in Japan though, regardless of the series.
