Now, see, I can't understand how Naruto is so popular. I flipped through one of the TPBs and saw a bit of the anime on TV in the States- Amusing enough, but it didn't really grab my attention the way that FMA did later in the evening.
But it's good to see manga doing so well :)

Naruto has moments when you instantly recognise why it's so damn special; the end of the Zabuza arc, almost any scene involving characters like Rock Lee or Orochimaru. It may look like another one of the latest Shounen Jump fads from the outside looking in but if you give it a chance, I mean a proper chance, it really kicks ass like nothing else out there.

I fear for the flood of mainstream! Naruto is an average run-of-the-mill shounen jump anime, that just happened to appear at the right time. By the way, I did watch 20 episodes - sadly it did nothing for me.

My fanboy senses are tingling.

I think 20 episodes was a fair chance, still average. Maybe if I was a bit younger, I'd be capativated - but then again probably not.

Dragonball Z..Bleach.. etc

I think it's good news that a manga can do so well. But jumping in like a human shield for Naruto, loses your credibility. Try and be a little more balanced.

Oh shut up if you dont like it fine but theres no need to put down others for liking it, its an awesome show if you like the genre.

Well said. i dont know why it is so good but when there are no fillers it just is great.

I only put down fanboys  Human shield number 2 - I'll be out of ammo at this rate!

Naruto is nothing special, not all of us will agree - and there is a thing called freedom of speech. I don't like fighting with lapdogs, so stop begging for a bone.

and there is a thing called freedom of speech

So why do you insist on putting down anyone who has different tastes to you then.

Oh and the way you keep using wink's is extremely condescending.

*swings the bone around* Your working towards extra treats! Maybe a Scooby Snack if your lucky!
Oh by the way, I don't like people who can't see past the fandom. I don't put everything down I dislike - too much hard work!

Do I make your nervous? ;) Yeah sorry about that. I blink waaay too much.

Personally, I can't see what all the fuss is about. I struggled through the first 26 eps of Naruto (not to mention a few of the GNs) and each and everyone, despite reassurances to the contrary, left me completely unmoved. The production's above average for a series of this ilk, but it's nothing I haven't seen a thousand times before and going on past efforts from the SJ genre not something I ever wanna see again... no matter how much you polish a turd it's still a turd IMO. ;)

And before the fanboys start baying for my blood I'll reiterate -- 'in my opinion'

It's good to see a 'decent' anime show (that is, not a show that's aimed at a really young audience) comes out on top. For all its faults Naruto is a really fun series - the excessive fillers are what have kept me from buying my own copy but what I've seen in passing has been pretty good if they are ignored. I can think of a lot of worse series that could have done equally as well.

Wow. I'm glad that my three word post at the top of this thread engaged such heated responses :)

It's also amusing that I'm being slapped with the label of "fan boy" for daring to express my enjoyment of a series that it's hip to hate these days. I prefer being this side of the fence though, better anime over this side.

Of course, I'll happily repeat the solid FACT that Naruto clearly is something special. Breaking book and TV records prove that the show is going beyond typical anime fandom and hitting previously unheard-of levels of adults and kids alike with it's quality.

I can grasp that some people just won't like something, it's their opinions after all, but to see such a lack of respect for series that is clearly breaking boundaries in Western anime fandom is rather disheartning. Alas, some of you need to watch Evangelion's "The hedgehog's dillema" episode again.

Good luck

As i havent seen any Naruto i cant say much for the series itself but i have seen DBZ which i watched from Frieza saga to beginning of the Buu saga cause it got repeatative, but the fight scenes were cool, but i got bored because of the lack of story so i had to move onto FMA :D .

But back on track Naruto being high in the book charts is a good thing no matter what your opinion on the series is, its going to interest others into buying that manga to see what it is, they may like it, find other mangas, find out about anime.... and it will grow from there.

Neptune.. theres a thread on the Random Chit Chat you might want to read, then think about how you react to others, that thread and you arnt too different.
