Also, we seem to remember that ending very differently. Unless I'm forgetting something, the protagonist systematically destroyed his relationships with everyone in his life so he could date his sister...and then they broke up after one kiss.

It was a jokey line, but quite possibly yes.
I searched for posts by me about OreImo and the oldest was actually about Eromanga Sensei on the viewing journal shortly after returning here in mid-2017, as it turns out just after that had aired. So I must have watched OreImo somewhen in the year before that because that's when I really started getting into anime properly after years of mainly watching the more mainstream films. I signed up for Netflix for Stranger Things which started mid-2016! & watched some anime classics like Death Note there and then signed up for Crunchyroll.
TL;DR It must be over 8 years since I saw it!

That sounds like plenty of time to have mentally redacted the trauma of the ending. When I rewatch Oreimo I stop at the end of the second TV series these days.
