UK Anime Distributor MVM Entertainment Discussion Thread

I ordered the Japanese First Press Limited Edition Complete Blu-ray BOX from overseas and was curious to know what's the difference between this set and the "Super Blu-ray BOX" that released in 2016? Reckon that release comes with the movie or something?

EDIT:

I have the funimation US box and also imported the disappearance. I didn’t want to take the risk on maybe the Japanese release not having the dub and the US one was a lot cheaper overall. Bit obvious by my name but I’m one of like 10 people that loved yuki chan so I’m glad i got it now if it’s not being released here.

From what I know the Japanese set (2010 release) has both English Dub and Subs. Though without a doubt the US set is [at least was] better price wise. I'll be going in blind on this show so hope all will be well 🙌

Ah I see, If you’ve never seen it before, firstly I hope you like it, it’s my favourite. Secondly the movie can be had on DVD here, at least for now. Might be a good stopgap perhaps?

I'll try avoid straying to far from this discussion thread so I'll ask one last question. I have these two releases so I'm all good or am I missing anything else?

I agree, I feel bad lol. Last post about haruhi I promise. For the core show you’re all set. This is mine with the three spin off shows included, they are the two cases on the right. You wouldn’t really want to consider these until you’ve watched what you’ve ordered anyway at least, so don’t worry too much about it for now.

So.. the core show? No. You have everything.

EDIT: Kizumonogatari 1-3 are considered a prequel to Neko Black.

First Season consists of:
  • Neko Black
  • Bake
  • Nise
Second Season consists of:
  • Neko White
  • Kabuki
  • Otori
  • Oni
  • Koi
  • Hana
And the Final Season consists of:
  • Tsuki
  • Owari 1-3
  • Koyomi
  • Zoku Owari

Apparently the recommended watch order by the author is posted here: Monogatari Series Watch Order – Discover the Best Way to Start Watching

I think this was how I watched it as well.

First Season:

1. Bakemonogatari (2006)

2. Kizumonogatari (2008)

3. Nisemonogatari (2008-2009)

4. Nekomonogatari Black (2010)

Second Season:

1. Nekomonogatari White (2010)

2. Kabukimonogatari (2010)

3. Hanamonogatari (2011)

4. Otorimonogatari (2011)

5. Onimonogatari (2011)

6. Koimonogatari (2011)

Final season:

1. Tsukimonogatari (2012)

2. Koyomimonogatari (2013)

3. Owarimonogatari (2013-2014)

4. Zoku Owarimonogatari (2014)

I really feel like I want to give Monogatari another chance, I don't think I was in the right frame of mind for it at all last time. These charts aren't helping though. Where's Nekomonogatari White and Kabukimonogatari on the image charts? Are they now grouped into the Second Season and no longer named? WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?

The reason why they’re grouped in the second season is because when the arcs that make up the second season were aired originally it was all aired as one season in 2013. I found the exact photo with the 12 covers posted above and followed it to the letter with no problems personally.
Ignoring the viewing order for a moment, i do know what you mean though in terms of maybe not being in the right mood, it wasn’t what I expected at all when I first started it. Very dialogue heavy that’s for sure

I watched in release order, which meant watching the Kizu movies after owari part 2 and that worked really well for me. Personally I would definitely recommend to not start with Kizu, as it works really well as an interlude given how different a narrative style it has compared to the rest of the series. So glad I did my research to get this order right. Still fuming at trusting (not knowing any better...) funimation's chronological order when watching their Haruhi Suzumiya set - blast!!

funimation's chronological order when watching their Haruhi Suzumiya set - blast!!
The thing with Suzumiya is that it's been aired on tv in Japan in the chronological order as well, the first time season 2 aired the whole thing (s1+2) was shown in chronological order (apart from episode 00 which was still the first episode shown). It muddies the water somewhat when deciding what should be the right order to watch.

When I watched Haruhi S1 for the first time (those super-expensive limited edition DVD box sets Bandai released aeons ago) my wife who watched it with me absolutely refused to watch anything other than chronological order because she viewed “anachronic” order as an offence against common sense and decency, or something.

Fast forward a decade and a half and my teenage daughter wanted to watch it, and decreed that anyone watching it in chronological order must be insane, so I watched it with her in the “correct” order for the first time. A very different experience. A bit gimmicky, but fun, and with a “proper” season climax, as opposed to fading away like the chronological S1 E14. She also insisted on making me watch the entirety of Endless Eight with her. My wife had long noped out of the Haruhi series by then.

I’m very excited that MVM are finally releasing the final volumes of Monogatari. Now I can finish my intermittent, confused reviews of the series. It’s only taken 2 years since I first started. Those suggested watch order charts are war crimes. I watched everything in (mostly) original light novel publishing order. I don’t see why you would do anything else unless you were a madman.

Most monogatari fans are by definition madmen.

I've only watched Haruhi in chronological order and wouldn't watch it any other way now. If you watch in the original order season 2 is going to be a huge drop off, but blending them together makes the whole series more balanced I think.

Monogatari should just be watched in LN order. Save Kizu until later if you want, as long as you don't watch it before Bake.

Haha I feel like if I was ever to watch only s1 then I'd do it in the original s1 broadcast order. But to do a full s1+2+movie watch then chronological makes more sense as that's how s2 was broadcast with s1. Also the s1 finale issue doesnt really matter in that case.

She also insisted on making me watch the entirety of Endless Eight with her.
Tbh everytime I watch it I watch the whole of Endless Eight. I know it seems a bit sadistic but it pulls you into Nagato's story arc far more and I'm a sucker for being a completionist!

Indeed. That we are.

I’ve not watched the entirety of Disappearance since I saw it at Scotland Loves Anime back in I think 2011(?) I remember enjoying it but it’s so looooooooooong. I picked up the DVD from CEX for like a fiver or something a while ago, so we’ll get around to it.

I’ve never seen the Yuki Nagato spin-off series, though it was never released physically here in the UK and I don’t think you can stream it legally either. I had to buy the Australian blu-ray from Amazon, but again not got around to watching it yet. I’ll probably watch it with my daughter after we’ve seen the movie.

I‘m kind of sad they never animated any of the later Haruhi arcs, but I have a friend who has read the original LNs and he says the series peaked with Disappearance, after that it quickly descends into trash.
