MCM London Weekend Licensing/News Thread

From the new announcements I'll be getting:
Toaru Hikuushi e no Tsuioku (on BR)
Kokoro Connect (more to own it than anything - if I rewatched it I'd rather use CR than a DVD. And I've got the books as well of course)
Kara no Kyoukai (on DVD, although I would love it if they managed to wheedle their way to a BR release)
Full Metal Panic: The Second Raid (on BR - I already own the others on ADV's DVD version)

I haven't seen this movie before, and my initial reaction was the same as with Lupin III, Gatchaman, Akira, Perfect Blue, Ghost in the Shell (original movie), Ninja Scroll...
The older movies I really don't know about their worth/value... I have never seen them before and in this case I'm younger than the movie itself.
So I doubt their value and whether I'll like them by great lengths.
Whoa, you're missing out on some real classics there. It's worth a few hours of your time to check 'em out, surely?

You wouldn't be the first to try to convince me to watch certain classics or popular anime.
I believe that next to Steel Angel Kurumi and Cowboy Bebop every anime I have watched since becoming an animefan was made after 2000.

And in all honesty. I never watched Pokémon, anything Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon or Card Captor Sakura. No interest whatsoever to watch the first few named. None really.

But to explain some problems.. Visuals are to a certain extent important to me, and next to nostalgic series I know I like (Top Cat, Wacky Races, The Angry Beavers,.) I'm not that likely to dip into old content. It are rare occasions when I do in fact. I haven't even seen Star Wars or Star Trek yet. So yeah... It's not something exclusive to anime, just to mention it. And another problem is: I DO NOT TORRENT. I simply don't. And since I like high quality (or yeah, HD) it's hard to come by movies (and I get really nervous from downloads that take ages to complete). Either way, I have found a preference in watching movies on tv or on (if possible blu-ray) disc.
So yeah, for anime movies it's more likely than not I have to rely on purchasing it if I want to see it. And therefor I need to have a good idea whether I believe I'll like it.
If it comes to Perfect Blue, it is on my Excel wishlist, but I'm often tempted to delete it. I get wrong ideas from the promotional stuff, as in that it is a porn.
But as for promotional stuff on YouTube & Google for stuff like Akira, well... It doesn't convince me.

And the visual thing extends to classic series and recent anime, ranging from Trigun to Flowers of Evil to Hellsing (Ultimate)

If it comes to stuff like Lupin III & Gatchaman... Those are simply old. The age of the franchise won't have it done justice at all.
I highly doubt I'd be able to like it. Visually Lupin III creeps me a bit out even (even the newest series), just like Flowers of Evil actually.
And the more recent Fujiko Mine series reminds me of why I don't have an incentive to watch or buy Redline. (also creepy)
Those franchises would be a torture to watch I reckon at the time of speaking, and I don't watch half franchises. I don't drop anime while I'm watching them.

A part of me definitely wants to try out certain movies like Perfect Blue, but there's the part that says I cannot afford spending even a few quid on either of them.
(I don't have a job, so it's not like I just have to wait for the next payday to get a haul in anime, figures etc like over half the active AUKN member here achieve)

Surprised Ano Hana didn't get licensed.
I presumed it would be fairly obvious with it being Hanabee too.
It's not because it hasn't been announced now at MCM Explo London May 2014 that it isn't coming.
Look at Mysterious Girlfriend X, Campione, Kokoro Connect, Clannad and Needless to name a few examples of anime that took quite a long time to get announced for UK release.
Based on some of the examples it could even be MVM will only announce their license for AnoHana in "exactly" one year from here... That is assuming they'll get it of course.

Either way, I think you guys who want AnoHana shouldn't worry yet and just let @MVM_UK know you want a blu-ray release for AnoHana in the UK.

Lots of good licenses there. Garden of Sinners got me punching the air until I read about it being DVD only :x
It's a bit odd to see MVM releasing anime movies though, I guess they don't mind releasing GoS because the films will all be in a single boxset. But then they will have to release the Kizumonogatari film in a few years time (or leave it for Manga like they did with Fate/Stay Night UBW) so maybe they've decided to be more open to the idea.
I actually asked about that and it is because they see it as a collection and not as movies.
Apparently licensing a movie costs as much as, or more than it would to license a full series, and obviously you can only price it at a certain price in the UK market so it's harder to make the money back.
Interesting. I suppose that makes sense. I always got the impression that Manga see things the other way around, prefering movies to series (not sure where I got that idea from, a podcast maybe?). But then Manga are a bigger company with corporate backing (Starz) so they can afford to invest more capital in licenses than MVM. Which just makes MVM all the more impressive when you look at the series they've picked up in the last year or two.
I might be wrong but I remember Anime Limited actually stating that it is easier to turn a profit on movies (as well)...
Even if licensing costs are the same, for a movie you only author one disc.. And unless you are part of a company called Kaze Entertainment or are drunk when making decisions (re: Sentai) you'll be sane enough to author an anime series over at least 2 Blu-Ray discs (and use all the space available (re: Funimation)), which costs more.
Also, it seems to me (accessing) an English dub is cheaper with a movie as well.. (And creating subs should be way cheaper as well compared to a series)
And if you, just like Anime Ltd, do theatrical runs of your movie licenses you'll get money back way faster...

Black Butler III? I do want to watch Black Butler in the long term. Will take a while before I do probably.

If it helps, about 75% of the first two seasons were filler. This new season (entited Black Butler: Book of Circus) returns back to the original manga route with an OVA announced (Black Butler: Book of Murder) that's set after the third season.
75%?! Wow. Either way, I watch anime complete. Even if there are endless bits of fillers like with Naruto.
Watching anime is fun, no idea why I would skip some fun. It wouldn't be the first time I enjoyed filler episodes by the way.
I try to learn what is filler and what isn't beforehand, but it isn't always easy to come by that information (especially when you are in a "lazy"-mood).

With all of the panels, in order to get a good seat, I snuck into the previous panels 10 minutes before the end and nabbed a good seat when everyone left the previous one. That's how I got to ask so many questions this year. I got 2 in during the anime industry panel (Netflix rights and Tamako Market/Chunibyo) and 2 in the Aniplex (Aniplex of Europe and Nisekoi).

I got odd looks from the girl next to me when I "wooed" at Kokoro Connect's announcement, so when Bunny Drop was announced I did a silent fist pump.

@Agent-347

I understand that for a new anime fan, older animation isn't as visually pleasing as modern releases, but especially in cases like Perfect Blue, which is not porn, most modern releases just don't come close story wise.

Perfect Blue is one of those films that you need to watch at least twice to fully understand everything. You'll obviously understand it on you're first watch, but the second time, you'll notice little things in the background and things will click. You don't tend to get that these days, everything is also so predictable...

I also recommend checking out other work by Satoshi Kon, especially Paprika and Paranoia Agent. Tokyo Godfathers and Millennium Actress are great as well, but for me they aren't as good, but I prefer physiological things.

Sadly I sold my old copy of it when Anime Limited announced their release last year, otherwise I would of posted it to you, so you could sample it for yourself (before then buying it on blu-ray).

Also, if you keep telling yourself that you won't enjoy older animation, then you won't.

Kokoro sounded familiar to me and with some sleep I think I remember why. Wasn't that the show that tanked in Japan because of the rookie VA bullying?

It was the series with the controversy around that, yes. And it did cause a brief flare, but at the end of the day there really wasn't much of an impact on disc sales (it had been expected to be a lower-middle seller and was a lower-middle seller), and the seiyuu (who was not a rookie - having been in the industry for about a decade by that point) affected did end up getting a part, so pretty much the only actual impact was the OP changing because eufonius refused to let them use the song after the issue flared up (several months after the actual event).

→ NEWER MOVIE → Psychic School Wars (2012)
Well, it was one of the three movies I showed great interest for to Andrew Partridge in a private message to him.
And I am greatly surprised to see Psychic School Wars announced before Aura. Either way I am pleased to hear this is getting released on dvd, blu-ray with a dub aboard.
BUT... what also surprised me is the flood of hate for the movie that caved in on me on Twitter. Yet, some constructive reviewers make it seem really awesome.
Even Reevothemusefan who gave it a 4 on this site actually made the movie sound good... Not sure how he did that whilst hating it.
And some theory of mine is that this is one of those movies that gets better after watching it a few times.
Either way, I haven't seen it yet and am interested in buying it. But I reckon there's no way Anime Ltd will get away with their regular collector's edition if the hate is true. We'll see.
Pre-order: Tough one... Tough one... I want to say yes, but it'll definitely depend on other releases within the same month of release a bit and on the price.

So, Nerawareta Gakuen as i'll call it was pretty god awful as i said on twitter, and i stand by that impression entirely. The film looked pretty, but used way to many special effects(see cherry blossoms in the wind every other scene) when they weren't necessary. What it failed to do was actually tell the story it should have in a way that made sense and felt meaningful. It didn't start bad at all, but then it become disjointed, hard to follow and a complete shambles. I was meant to care for characters but i have no idea why, things where thrown in at what felt like random to flesh out histories, and there was no reason for it. Perhaps if they restructured the events things would've helped, but honestly it was a complete mess.

This i believe was the first full blown project the director had worked on, so his inexperience shows. Maybe if they gave it to someone else it wouldn't have been so bad. Especially coming from Sunrise, you would have expected better.

I was told this before so i'll pass it on. If you want to check out Nerawareta in any format, check out other iterations of the works if you can find them, or read the novel. I don't know if the novel got a translation or not, but i think you would be doing yourself a service to read that instead of watching this.

Anyways, i'll leave it at that. I gave it a 3 and that was being generous

Full Metal Panic S1 &2 Dubbed DVD

HURRY UP AND TAKE MY MONEY! HURRY!

Typical that I'd picked them up on Funi BD just before Xmas after sitting on the fence about upgrading for ages. I suppose I can live without whatever packaging AL provide, as long as there's not some kind of upgraded BD footage or other shiny extras.

Aha! Interesting. It wouldn't be the first time I watch something twice in a row to understand something better.
Eg.: there is a certain episode of Tower of Druaga I HAD to watch twice as I was left confused the first time around.

I wonder whether All The Anime is interested in picking up both Tokyo Godfathers and Millennium Actress? Especially the former is one I want to watch.

I already own Paprika on Blu-Ray, I want to watch it with my friends though as it is one of the rare releases that has Dutch subtitles included.
So I want to abuse that opportunity to watch an anime with my buddies/pals. Still have to schedule a date for that.

Paranoia Agent, that's another title I have serious doubts about actually. Main reason I turned the DOTW down was the lack of BD release in the UK.
I'll see what happens when an UK BD release occurs. Maybe I'll get it, but it's another one of those "should I really watch it?"-cases.

The thought counts and is appreciated.

But as for the Excel-file: I'll keep Perfect Blue on the list, I guess, but the rest I mentioned remains off.
Wings of Honneamise will be added to the list when a release date surfaces (assuming I won't change my mind).

I don't tell myself beforehand I won't like it, there's an amount of factors in the "game" really.
If I told myself that I won't like older animation I wouldn't have returned from my original idea to only watch anime made after 2000.
There just are shows and movies that visually creep me out (or to use another word: ugly). And as said there are recent examples of it as well. (Flowers of Evil)
So that's one reason why I came back from that decision, as well as seeing how good Cowboy Bebop was.

And, given English dubs and dubs in general weren't the same back in the old days that could also make me say "no" to an anime.
Background noise can be a big no, as it can be distracting. It're hard decisions, sometimes even with newer anime...
So I think trailers and such are even more important for straight out old/classic anime than it is for current anime.

Btw, I have been interested in picking up Iria from MVM, the only reason I have not to is because that is literally one of the worst spines I have ever seen.
Ironically, it is one of those rare releases without disc count on the spine, because there's only one disc though. But the BBFC logo should've been at the bottom together with the MVM logo.

@Agent-347: Stop every anime that you are watching, go get Perfect Blue and watch it. Unless you are really young :p
I am really young, I'm 19 years young, turning 20 in late august.

However, my PayPal only holds €13 at the moment due to my payment for Fate/Zero P1 LE by MVM via Zavvi. So I can't afford it at the time of speaking.
I have sent some more money to my PayPal just in case there is a good sale online, and even if I got it... I have exams from 5 to 18 June.
I'll be learning for Analytics, Statistics, Geometry, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and French during that period so I can move on from high school.
And if nothing goes wrong I'll be graduating on 27 June 2014. =3 Maybe if I get some money for my graduation I can pay up for Perfect Blue. Maybe.

My point is I simply won't have time to watch any anime from 1 to 18 June either.

You care about what others think about your taste in anime? Unless it is somebody you personally know I wouldn't really refrain from cheering.
I would do a Jon Stewart-boom-bomb-storm if I heard Anime Ltd picked up the rights to TsukuYomi Moon Phase for instance.
What the hell would I care what the one next to me thinks. I LOVE THAT ANIME. It deserves a decent NTSC UK release.

I'll have a good think over it. If I Google reviews for this I get plenty of positive reviews actually... xD
Either way, there're plenty of other releases that have priority over this now. (Kill La Kill, Chu2Koi, Zero no Tsukaima,...)

By the way, for your information: I like cherry blossoms, in the Questionnaire of Proust I've to do for French I mention "The flowers of the Cherry Blossom Tree". =P
And I really have no clue how far your taste and my taste actually match in conjunction with how your way of thinking works. (No offence!)

And it doesn't hurt to watch something "bad" every once in a while, it makes you appreciate the good stuff more. ^_~
The main reason why the #13th anime I watched is Honoo no Labyrinth. The first time I sought a title I knew I wouldn't like that much. xD

'Jerome is talking about the exclusivity deal Manga Entertainment signed some time ago with FUNimation to get access to their UK sub-licenses'

means that anything Manga don't want to release is then locked out of possible license by MVM or AL. is this why titles like little busters & hagani have no sign of coming to UK?
Pretty much, except for Little Busters which has nothing to do with them.
MVM have somehow managed to work something out for a few titles - Kiddy Grade, Fruits Basket and [something else I'm forgetting]
Anime Limited have also now got Full Metal Panic which has been stuck somewhere between FUNi and Kadokawa for years.

It would be annoying if they got the deal and further convinced Funimation to keep going for UK rights to streams they have no intention of ever letting people outside the US watch.

The OVAs would be the main draw for this one, or at least the main reason to actually go and get it rather than letting it linger on my wishlist for eternity in these days where I have to be satisfied in the main with streams.

I was over at UK Anime Network, who posted an interview with Andrew Partride, President of Anime Limited...

On page 3, they were talking about announcements of new licenses (this looks like it was before Anime Limited made their Sunday announcements, at least).

In a reply, Andrew says this:

"I actually believe that the days where announcing licenses at panels is becoming pointless in the UK - I think there's more interest in just posting them straight online and then just talking about it via there.
So, in no real ascending order we have Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya, which is not a usual title for us but it's an experimental one which came part and parcel with another license, which is Blood Lad. Blood Lad is of interest to us as it fits our stereotype as we look for the best of certain genres and we don't really have a fighting anime in our collection, and Blood Lad is very much fighting anime done right.

I don't think they announced Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya for a UK release, is this a mistake or actually a new license?

Here's the page for the interview: Click Here

That's a strange one considering I thought Fate/kaleid would go to MVM. If AL does have it (officially) then I'll wait for the UK version to support their experiment.

Fate/ is like, the anime franchise bike. It's been with everybody xD.
