London expo licenses!

Master of Martial Hearts was announced at the panel by Manga, although it does indeed seem to have been missed out of the opening post.
Already been anounced before this, that's why.
Still lol at them licencing something rated so badly. The series main point is charcters by a famous HCG artist, and that's all it has as a positive point.

It's rated in the bottom 10 anime on at least one main list (it's at 4290 of the 4329 rated on MAL), only 3 places higher than Isshoni Training, which was so bad it felt like it was causing actual physical harm when I watched it.
I almost want to see it to laugh at how bad it is.

Are these two licence announcements that haven't been trumpeted this weekend?
Sorry, I got Druaga and Linebarrels mixed up (only ever saw one episode of both, although only in the latter case because I actually couldn't stand it - the first ep of Druaga I watched on Bost, didn't feel it worth paying for the rest and never got around to watching it when it streamed for free).

I presume that once Funi do their initial deal, any subsequent distribution of the series — including by means of streaming — has to be on a sub-license basis.
Exactly - and since FUNi sub-license exclusively to Manga (MVM tried to negotiate with them for Chobits since they are now sitting on the UK license but were shot down) and FUNi are dominating so much in the US, Beez have been getting "locked out" of an increasing share of the anime market.

Is the situation involving Beez and Manga back-catalogue titles on Crunchyroll comparable to this?
What titles would that be?

FUNi have a majoriy share, but it's through 2/3 series. FUNi only started licencing titles in large numbers after it got all the rescued Geneon and ADV shows.
The problem is the licence status on those rescued shows, that includes a lot of well known titles that are potentialy going to get stuck as unlicencable here, as Manga go after newer FUNi stuff( which they're releasing nearly all of). Having almost every show anyone has ever given me as a recomendation to watch be unavailabe here legaly (if they were they're OOP) except by import is not a good thing. Can't imagine it's good for new fans either.

As you guys already know - Kaze / Viz Media Europe are already in the UK - we distribute via Manga Entertainment :). Given what an amazing job Jerome does of that I have no reason to change that - it's bad business really otherwise!

I'll be working on the UK market for everything Kaze, we distribute a range of merchandise, J-Pop and J-Rock too. So it's a real chance to grow the industry really and I'm absolutely not going anywhere.

I didn't make a big thing of it at the panel as I'll still be at London Expo and many other events in future, it's business as usual and such too on that front. Different role, different company but same country and in my opinion the same responsibility to let you guys know what we're doing too!

Of course I'll change my usedname to kaze_andrew soon though :p - apart from that, nothing's different re contacting me. No matter how high in a company I am you still should have a chance to talk to me about things!

TL;DR:

People are right, am still staying in UK market just a different company. We've got merchandise, J-Pop + J-Rock and then we have DVD distro via Manga Entertainment. There's some other exciting stuff on the horizon but nothing I can discuss just now of course too ;)!

Look forward to working with you all in my new role, you guys are awesome!

Andrew,
Kaze | Viz Media Europe

Oh thank god for that :p
If it wasn't for you i wouldn't of given Gurren Lagaan, definitely the most approachable, helpful and understanding man in the top distributors of the market. Seems Kaze knew you where the right man for the job :thumb: good luck and hope to see you about the expo next time :)

Somebody tell me more about Kaze - so they're gonna start releasing DVD's here through Manga?

They've already started. Professor Layton was their first, and Vampire Knight will be next. And I'm sure Andrew will be back at work fielding complaining fans soon enough. Well, one whinging fan at least, as I have a heads up on Vampire Knight, and Kaze have issues...

The price for one, which Manga have done their best to deal with, but even still, VK is twice the going rate for new anime in the UK. The French have it worse. Kaze released Vampire Knight in two boxsets, one with seven eps, the other with six, at 40 Euros RRP each. Then they did the same with Vampire Knight Guilty. Also, 4 and 3 episodes per disc.

It looks like the forthcoming R1 Vampire Knight boxset will be a 2 disc release, although it was released on 3 singles as in R4.

And UPOP. User Prohibited Operations. If you select the English dub, you get the signs by default and you can't turn them off or change audio on the fly. If you choose Japanese audio, you get the subs by default and you can't turn them off, or change the audio track. They may as well be burnt in subs. And you can't change the time display on your player, no time remaining in programme or chapter, just time elapsed.

The same UPOP issues were present on the Professor Layton DVD.

So yeah, I have an early whinge about Kaze's disc authoring. The transfers are nice though!

What titles would that be?
To wit, anything in-print over here that is available on CR within R1 or R2. From what I was last told, local companies are "approached" for their streaming sub-licenses.

The only titles in question are : Haruhi+ ONAs, Gundam 00 S2, Code Geass and Naruto (first series).
There's a few Beez shows that are on CR, Gundam related.
Simulcast stuff is mostly available, so it's almost a non issue.
I thought it was more CR will now aproach other companies for streaming licences (other than who the US rights are from). They appear to have started on this recently, hence things like Hayate no Gotoku (first season) now being available here, assuming that needed going to Japanese licensor for a show they got off the US distro.

It's amazing that some people are still passing constructive criticism that resulted in changes, which obviously meant there was some foundation behind them, and room to manoeuvre as moaning.

Actually, thinking about that, does that mean Kaze are intending to enter the UK as a new distributor in their own right or continue working with Manga?

This is what I'm interested to know. There was mention of Kaze looking at the UK, but from what I've heard it seemed to be the digital market rather than physical, but perhaps it has been misreported.

Does all this mean that you will be directing Scotland Loves Animation again or not?

So many names, so little time to investigate.

Well at least with this Manga's catalogue is going to be more 'varied'. Bricks where shat when I noticed the OVA of Negima!? with their logo on it

I tried to get some cheering going during the actual panel. I was pretty gutted that essentially no-one joined in. :(

Whoaaaaaaaaaa... pretty much no way I purchase anything authored like that, whether it's mandated by the terms of their license or otherwise.

Would love to try that on my old pioneer, the firmware is somewhat altered and UPOPs are a thing of the past. Its why I won't replace it :)

I raised my hand in celebration upon hearing news of the K-On! license, if only to rub salt in the wounds of those who disapprove of such a title.

How can anyone disapprove of K-on, its harmless fun well made too, relaxing and not actually inane. It's a much better version of lucky star (maybe I shouldn't have said that...)

season 1 was alright but season 2 was rather funny and more entertaining though, comparable to azumanga daioh.

People will fawn for this stuff, I myself feel indifferent. The replay value is probably once every 84 months

Different target audience. Lucky Star is a moe series K-on! isn't.
The imortant point being tottal lack of men or proxy men in K-on! almost no fanservice (not that Lucky Star has much either), and it doesn't have such a perpetualy expanding cast. Season 2 ends with 9 main cast members, Lucky star ended with 16 (and that was after cutting some out).

I was hoping it would be a moe show and was disapointed by it's absence. Found Yui and Mugi (tho' she has the odd moment) so annoying it was hard to watch. Greatly improved by addition of Azusa and more freequent apearences by Ui. Still feel it is so slow as to have almost no rewatch value though.

Stuart-says-yes said:
K-on's an after-school comedy with a really deep plot and powerful character development, how can you miss it's amazing innovative-ness?
I don't like Yui but she has some good moments, like when she disappears from the run for some snacks in episode 15 that was brilliant.

I was in hysterics at the end of that episode were Yui thinks they're going to be one rice cake short so they all start running really hard... with the slow motion line cross and Mio tripping over again...

You sure you was watching the monitor when you was playing this show?

and for anyone who's not noticed for 11 months
