Sad to hear from Expo Andrew is leaving Beez.

NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

This is sad news. Sad indeed - I can only hope he's going on to do bigger and better things.

Andrew's honest, earnest and forthright comments, his approachability and his obvious enthusiasm for anime are going to be missed. I sincerely hope that whoever takes on his position is possessed of these same qualities.

If you're seeing this Andrew - thanks for everything!

I'm fairly sure he's staying in the industry, I didn't quite catch where he said he was going to work but it looked like it said he had something to do with the guy from Manga, or maybe it was something to do with some branch of VIZ media...

Do people here never read the thread they are posting in
He's going to Kaze, the French distro.
They just published Profesor Layton here through Manga, they're owned by the same people as Viz Media (Sueisha and Shogakukan).

Can I ask, is Haruhi S2 and Haruhi-chan being bundled together or did I miss read something?

Even so, there all insta-buy.

Good bye Andrew.
The movie and S2 were bundled, i.e the same licence.

They're separate series, I realy don't want to have to buy Haruhi S2 to get Haruhi-chan and Churuya-san.
Endless Eight realy is that bad unless you are a massive fan, or realy like spot the difference games. Though having no reused scenes in 7 almost identical eps is an impresive feat, I still dropped the series after the first 3.

Hopefuly Churuya-san and Haruhi-chan get released together, they might be 3-10 min eps but there's 38 of them together, that's enough for a release by themselves.

I do not want my shelves despoiled by Endless Eight, and will happily not buy the two I do want to prevent this.

to save all the panicing, Andrew is not leaving the UK or Anime business

rather he is taking on a similar role as he did for bandai for Kaze (another French group that is looking to start uk distributions) that will be arriving soon who seem to be pushing for more UK streaming

it sounds like they are gonna be going for more blu-rays in future too from what they said, at least for movies/shorter series, which is cool (though no good to me atm as my PS3 remains broken)

It's amazing that some people are still passing constructive criticism that resulted in changes, which obviously meant there was some foundation behind them, and room to manoeuvre as moaning.

Actually, thinking about that, does that mean Kaze are intending to enter the UK as a new distributor in their own right or continue working with Manga?

This is what I'm interested to know. There was mention of Kaze looking at the UK, but from what I've heard it seemed to be the digital market rather than physical, but perhaps it has been misreported.

As you guys already know - Kaze / Viz Media Europe are already in the UK - we distribute via Manga Entertainment :). Given what an amazing job Jerome does of that I have no reason to change that - it's bad business really otherwise!

I'll be working on the UK market for everything Kaze, we distribute a range of merchandise, J-Pop and J-Rock too. So it's a real chance to grow the industry really and I'm absolutely not going anywhere.

I didn't make a big thing of it at the panel as I'll still be at London Expo and many other events in future, it's business as usual and such too on that front. Different role, different company but same country and in my opinion the same responsibility to let you guys know what we're doing too!

Of course I'll change my usedname to kaze_andrew soon though :p - apart from that, nothing's different re contacting me. No matter how high in a company I am you still should have a chance to talk to me about things!

TL;DR:

People are right, am still staying in UK market just a different company. We've got merchandise, J-Pop + J-Rock and then we have DVD distro via Manga Entertainment. There's some other exciting stuff on the horizon but nothing I can discuss just now of course too ;)!

Look forward to working with you all in my new role, you guys are awesome!

Andrew,
Kaze | Viz Media Europe

I would, I mean I would pay £40 out right, to get that say it was all bundled together, I doubt it but it would be cool if they did something like that.

Also Endless eight wasn't to bad, I just dropped the series because of the irregular release dates of the fan-subs.

How was endless eight not too bad? 5 identical episodes maybe interesting in an experiemental kind of way and it's all very well saying the characters had it worse repeating it over a thousand times or whatever, but at least most of them forgot that it was the same each time.

I just think it was a waste of resources. They reanimated each ep and re-recorded the dialogue each time, just seems like they could've spent it on something more entertaining and worthwhile

I don't think we'll ever see the days of Geneon USA's anime CDs again, but is there any chance of getting more J-Pop (anisongs in particular) on UK iTunes? It is annoying to see all the artist names come up in the store but to find almost all of them empty.

Look forward to working with you all in my new role, you guys are awesome!

Just so you know, when that happens I'll be calling you Fukunga.

Good to see Tatami Galaxy getting a release. At first it seems odd, but it really pays off at the end.

endless eight done right so I heard. Be interesting to see how they pull of a dub(if they do that is)

So long as we're discussing the Industry Panel, I was surprised to learn from Jerome that Funimation personally acquires licences for all English-speaking regions, and then contacts Manga (inter alia) to see if anyone is interested in sub-licensing.

I previously assumed that our local companies were the ones who had to make first contact with Japan, and that the initial R1 license wouldn't mention anything about our territory.

There is a reason they have streaming rights for most of their titles here, including pleanty that aren't getting dvd releases. Bare in mind the rights normaly come bundled.

They've always done this, since back when they distroed through MVM at least. As have most other licensors.

FUNimation has been doing that for years - Revelation Films' anime releases were straight distro for FUNi and MVM was their parter before that. The one upshot is that we can watch some of their titles on Youtube since they have the license (but not on their own portal, for reasons never adequately explained).
This is the main reason that Beez started looking into early sub-only licenses like Durarara! so they have a chance at some top tier titles before FUNi locks them up.
It isn't across the board mind (hence the titles that aren't accessible on Youtube etc.) - Gonzo for example tended to deal directly with the UK which is why MVM retained the license for some series like Samurai 7 after FUNimation switched to Revelation, and indeed why they just managed to get Druaga.
ADV used to do pretty much the same thing, only in their case they had an actual UK division handling things over here (who also picked up some stuff from Geneon and Nozomi etc.), again hence why the pre-Section23 stuff on TAN is available in the UK.

edit: got my Gonzo titles mixed up

I see. I presume that once Funi do their initial deal, any subsequent distribution of the series — including by means of streaming — has to be on a sub-license basis.

Is the situation involving Beez and Manga back-catalogue titles on Crunchyroll comparable to this?

Egad! No mention has been given of Master of Martial Hearts.

Are these two licence announcements that haven't been trumpeted this weekend?

Master of Martial Hearts was announced at the panel by Manga, although it does indeed seem to have been missed out of the opening post.

They also dropped a big hint over other acquisitions which they've not gotten the go ahead to announce yet. As they were waiting for Funi to give them the final go ahead, as it was something Funi had the UK rights for.

The impression I got was that it was something big, that Funi had recently announced their possession of the rights. So maybe Index/Railgun?
