Reaper, what's your actual opinion on Haruhi then? I don't really consider Lucky Star or Haruhi to be moe (or moe for me) because of the fact they way too self aware and referential to be taken completely seriously.

Wether the series is a parody or not doesn't matter.
Haruhi (tsundere), Mikuru (moeblob) and Yuki (kuudere/ Ayanami Rei clone) are stereotypical intentionaly moe characters. This fact isn't changed by the fact it's lead is aware of this. Lucky Star has even more parody, as it breaks the 4th wall all the time, that still doesn't stop the fact Kagami is (emplied to be) a stereotype tsundere, or that Tsukasa is a clone of Kamigishi Akari (the lead in ToHeart).

K-on!s failure at being moe are due to the fact everyone dresses realisticaly; their uniform isn't flattering, they look plain and ordinary. Also none of the characters are particularly weak or flawed (they're fairly normal), there's nothing there that encorages you to want to jump in and help/protect them; they'll be fine themselves anyway.

Isn't a school uniform, what changes a girl into a school girl , I mean they wouldn't be an afterschool band if they weren't wearing uniform. Plus I mean there are plenty of times in the series where they don't wear school clothing.
They wear realistic modern school clothing not the stereotype. You could put them in sailor suits.

Also what could they possibly face that they would need protecting from anyway? Steel guitar strings?
Terminal illness, amnesia, hiding their magic powers, their near debilitating social phobia, being a robot that's going to break down very soon, hiding their borderline incest relationship, being so imencely rich/powerful/ famous/ a god that normal people are afraid of you, etc. etc.

As said there is nothing, that's why it's not moe.

I completely disagree about the parody point. If, for example, someone done pervy shots and humour (a la, Carry On), I wouldn't be all "ehh..." instead I would find it humorous, in a satirical manner. If it was completely serious about it, I would most certainly be all "ehh...".

A lot of shows like to use stereotypes to mock and break them, but you seem to take that on face-value... whatever.

And yet these are some of the reasons why K-ON! is so incredibly moe. http://lmgtfy.com/?q=subjective

The idea that they will be "fine anyway" makes no sense whatsoever, except for the incredibly backwards-thinking fact that you know that they are alright in the end.

I find some of the frogs from Keroro Gunsou moe but want to punch most Key characters in the face the moment they open their mouths. Moe is a personal thing. I can see why a number of people might find the mundane but earnest adventures of the K-On! girls to be full of moe potential, even though I doubt I will feel they same when I finally buy it from a bargain bin.

And UPOP. User Prohibited Operations. If you select the English dub, you get the signs by default and you can't turn them off or change audio on the fly. If you choose Japanese audio, you get the subs by default and you can't turn them off, or change the audio track. They may as well be burnt in subs. And you can't change the time display on your player, no time remaining in programme or chapter, just time elapsed.
Whoaaaaaaaaaa... pretty much no way I purchase anything authored like that, whether it's mandated by the terms of their license or otherwise.

I doubt that it's a contract thing, as Viz didn't lock Vampire Knight away, and neither I think did Madman in R4. It's just Kaze.

That's... insane. Why would you do that by choice?

Moe being known to most of the English fandom is due to it's use in Haruhi.
The moeblob term is from the English fandom, to desribe Mikuru. Her character description is almost nothing but saying she's moe. It's all "Kyon" thinks about her, though he himself doesn't use the term. Her intitial one compares her to a magical girl, for example.

More the fact they're not facing impending doom without any intervention, this is just their hobby. Letting Haruhi throw a strop results in armageddon, leaving Mikuru alone with Haruhi results in her getting raped etc. Leave Yui to her own devices and Ui will fix anything realy stupid she does fine, no requirement to actively protect them from anything.

Actually, no. Kyons thoughts where not all her being moe, haruhi's intentions from the beginning where to grab a moe-like person to join the SOS brigade. And she "just so happened" to fit the bill, but moeblob? bollocks. That belongs to K-on!

And to be fair, i hate that term anyways. Why the heck people came to use that, i dunno, but it's stupid.

As far as I know, the phrase moeblob is just a snarky comedic term created by English bloggers to discuss characters who are small and simply/cutely designed, with emphasised boobs, eyes and stuff. They are a "blob" of a thing/person. Quite literally. (I always think of this. :p)

I doubt people should be reading into the word that much though.

That's very reverse-engineered though, not to mention how much it speaks to the extremely unsophisticated understanding of the concept that would result in any early terminology.

I'd also say that it goes completely against your dislike/"unmoefication" of K-ON!, since the overwhelming evidence of any research you could do would show that a large number of people consider the characters in that to be "moeblobs" (goddam I hate that term even more when I have to type it ^^; ).

I'd also suggest you could find people who wish the characters in K-ON! would die horrible deaths, which you yourself have gone on record in the forum as believing to be "moe".

Your so cruel Maxon.
The teary reaction shots from Ui or Azusa to Yui's unfortunate demise being what I was after. Generaly happy inocent character dealing with the death of imediate family/ close friend, essentialy Kanon.
That and getting the joy of watching the red smear that was Yui slowly trickle from beneath said Acme 100 ton anvil.
